The MMOFPS genre definitely needs an upgrade, Planetside seems to be the only one that stands out and it's not exactly the best in the world. Maybe a whole new game will give this genre some love.

Let me translate this to those of you who do not speak Sony-speak.

"We can't figure out a way to work micro-transactions into Planetside in a way that makes you really want to pay for extras. So what we plan to do is rework the game into a new form that will allow us to add micro-trans to the game while still charging you a monthly subscription"

If they are truly thinking about making a Planetside 2, then I am really excited. I loved the original, even if it was brutally difficult (your entire country/faction/whatever really had to work as a team if you wanted to get anything done).

The idea of an MMOFPS is solid, but Planetside was years before its time. I don't think voice chat was really around at the time (it wasn't a part of the game, as far as I can remember) and it really would have made collaborating a lot easier. The system of getting to the battlefield (ships in the big cities that had a respawn time of five minutes or so. A lot of time was spent waiting for those ships) was also a little bit wonky, and it seems like the hit detection was awful. If they can fix those issues in a new game, I would seriously consider playing again.

I think this will also make it the first of this gen's heavy weight-funding MMOFPS too. This could be a beginning of some very good things.

Bananaboat: Those ships were supposed to be a last-resort for people who could not find a squad. So many players left Planetside after the beta that for a lot of players the HART drop was the only means of transportation. And it sucked.

I played during the beta when there were an assload of players - there was never trouble finding a squad with a qualified Galaxy transport pilot. *THAT* was what made the game fun - loading up with your squad into a transport and flying to your mission objective, fighter escorts and all.

@potato - Oh yeah! I completely forgot about those ships. You parachute out of them right? It seems like they were fairly easy targets, but the ability to bypass ground defenses was helpful.

You are right though, there were nowhere near enough pilots, and most people had to use those ships with the high respawn time. Eventually I just couldn't put up with it anymore, and I quit, but it was a memorable year or so that I spent playing it.

I hope they can fix their mistakes for Planetside 2 (if it ever really happens)

Is it being developed by SOE? If so, no thanks. They've done nothing but terrible, terrible things since 03.

I really was trying to be fair as I do have a PS3. However it doesn't see much game-time aside from some Wipeout HD sessions! Plays lots of Blu-Rays tho!!!

This game used to be epic, 3 or so years ago... but they lost their professional site, and SoE pretty much killed off the prime community with their patches and modifications.

I'm not sure I want to give them a second chance.

I totaly agree with the statements about the gameplay ruining patches, but c'mon guys can you think of any other FPS game that will allow 300 players on 1 server to duke it out.

Not to mention theres 12 server....err i mean continents/planets so lets do the math.

300x12=3600.... yes thats right three thousand six hundered.

with all hit detection and lag issues aside the fact that this can be done @ all is pretty amazing let alone how well its being done.

I believe they can pull it off again with PS2 or whatever their calling it this time.

@ least now they have a list of mistakes to look @ and say ya well that was a bad idea(ie, breaking up the best continent Oshur).

PLANETSIIIIIIDE!!! PLANETSIIIIIIDE!! This is the only game i will sell everything in order to play. I don't care about WoW. Modern warfare2. Left 4 Dead 2. Borderlands. Counter-strike. If this game got a sequel to it i will quit these games in a heartbeat
