TGS 2009: Here's our obligatory cosplay gallery
When the Tokyo Game Show opens its doors to the public, you can expect two things: hour-long waits to play anything; and cosplay fanatics. Enjoy this collection of images we took while waiting in a line ... and then uploaded while waiting in a line. Where is this line going? Who knows! It's TGS 2009's first public day and we're going to wait here like gentlemen, dagnabbit.

Oh my god. I think I'm going to have to go to Japan. It's going to const a lot and hurt my hip pocket but I think I'm in love.
Jrinswand @ Sep 26th 2009 4:37PM
Is it just me, or does Japanese cosplay always seem to better than American cosplay? They seem to get way more into it than Americans do. Then again, I'm pretty sure cosplaying is like a national sport over there.
Jrinswand @ Sep 26th 2009 4:39PM
*seem to be better
Vegnagun bwf @ Sep 26th 2009 4:48PM
It's not you.
freaparn @ Sep 26th 2009 5:10PM
Japanese cosplayers make cosplay bearable, I think even non-enthusiasts of the pastime can agree on that. The amount of effort, time, and money put into these get-ups is just staggering, and it makes most other cosplayers seem to be half-assing it in comparison. Although to be fair, there were some decent showings at one of those German gaming conventions a while back.
That being said, there are a lot of "traps" in this lineup, or some rather masculine women, one of the two.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Sep 26th 2009 5:27PM
it might just be not looking into at all, but i've never heard of any japanese equivalents to the 501st or Mandalorian Mercs, those guys are DEDICATED
ChuckBartowski @ Sep 26th 2009 5:55PM
it is a lot better, but then they don't look like the actual characters. I never understood why Japanese game makers don't actually make their characters look Japanese.....
Zo @ Sep 26th 2009 7:32PM
@ChuckBartowski
Per your question -- just like there are Japanese censorship laws that need to be followed for video games, I believe there are also laws on how characters can look down to actualy mathematical perportions of face, eyes, etc. -- which is why characters look like they do in Japanese anime, cartoons, games etc. for things illustrated.
BananaBoat @ Sep 26th 2009 7:44PM
@Zo - Har Har good sir
@ChuckBartowski - Even the experts disagree on why there is such a lack of Japanese looking protagonists in video games made in Japan (also, in Anime). In games, I believe the reason they use white characters is that they want to reach the international market (basically the US, Canada, Australia and Europe). Anime is a different beast, and I'm really not sure myself why they've been using mostly white main characters since before there even was an international market. (The experts like to cite the occupation of Japan after WWII as the reason, and all sorts of other psychology BS, but I'm not sure if I buy it)
Oh, and if I had to choose, I'd go for the girl in picture 44 or 51. Obviously, no one is ever going to give me this choice, despite my dashing good looks and Scrooge McDuck style money vaults, but it is a good idea to have a pick in mind (kind of like the NFL draft).
(Steam:lennoko) Hai im 12, and what is this PC gaming @ Sep 26th 2009 9:55PM
Id have to go with #42.
Bezzer @ Sep 26th 2009 10:04PM
Japanese cosplay is a whole other level I think. But when you have shops devoted to cosplay it kind of makes sense.
What I saw yesterday was the best I've seen, but I can only compare it to Australian cosplay.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Sep 26th 2009 10:14PM
sorry Banana Boat, not everyone can be me
Avatar @ Sep 27th 2009 11:29AM
@Bananaboat
Japanese anime (and manga) is based off of American comic books. You could think of it as kind of an homage to the source by keeping with white characters. Also, most Asians are whiter than people think, and less than half have the the slanty eyes. It's also easier to give people crazy hair colours (Canadian spelling, bitches) if they're white, because of the contrast, and the same with eye colour. And finally, in Japanese culture North Americans have the same general sexual appeal as Asians do in our society.
BananaBoat @ Sep 27th 2009 12:52PM
@Avatar - That is one of the theories I always hear. Even the hardcore sociologists never agree on the subject though. Personally, I think it is a combination of the influence of Disney on the early animators, and then the influence of those early animators on the later animators, as well as the fascination that the Japanese seem to have with American culture and media (in a much more mainstream way than our fascination with their games/anime, with the exception of our love of Mario or maybe Pokemon).
We'll never know for sure. It would be nice if they'd throw a bit of ethnic diversity into their media though (the same goes for American video game developers)
NaeemTHM @ Sep 26th 2009 4:45PM
Jade Raymond is hot.

Pic 19 is a total plastic bag case.
MowDownJoe @ Sep 26th 2009 5:26PM
By that, do you mean "the breasts are fake"? Or "IT'S A TRAP!"? Since it's the obligitory Mai cosplayer, I'm just curious...
BlaqueBeird @ Sep 27th 2009 11:38AM
I dunno, she's got the hips to match. And even if they're fake, why are you complaining?
[ArchiGamer] [Live from Omicron Persei 8] @ Sep 26th 2009 5:16PM
I hate when the male characters are done by girls; it only shows how androgynous they really are.
Zachary @ Sep 26th 2009 5:20PM

bm @ Sep 26th 2009 6:21PM
I'm not even going to begin to list the ways in which that is a fucked up post.
ShadowOp @ Sep 26th 2009 7:29PM
I see why you would say that, but look at anime as what it is; it's a cartoon projection of large eyes blonde hair and mystical things and people feed into into it like crazy. I'm not saying that I've done research and study into what cultural ties there are into what phsychologically goes into this phenomenon, but i think it does leave room for thought. But I would like to hear your side, if you would like. I think discussion is a way for everyone to broaden horizons.
MisterSquared @ Sep 26th 2009 6:50PM
have you never been to an American Anime convention? It's craploads of white people wanting to be Japanese
Rentaro @ Sep 26th 2009 6:52PM
For some reason, I feel as if the quality of cosplay gone down a bit this year: I can actually tell the difference between the guys and the girls
jorojoserojas @ Sep 26th 2009 7:04PM
Tough economy.
sonicspike41 @ Sep 26th 2009 8:48PM

Remind me again why that is a bad thing.

It's kind of sad how every trade show these days has an "obligatory" cosplay soft-porn gallery. Basically, if you're a moderately attractive woman and want to experience the kind of attention truly hot women get every day go to some sausage-fest trade show that caters to a bunch of nerds and cosplay:
