TGS 2009: Hands-on: Bayonetta (PS3)
The game's hyper excess occasionally veers into the distasteful -- Bayonetta's clothing seems to come and go as it pleases -- but it mostly leads to situations that feel creative and surprising. Even a boss fight avoids routine by constantly changing pace: a battle on a bridge eventually becomes airborne after the whole structure is flung across the stage, and the ordeal isn't over until after a brief chase and a final showdown atop a winding set of stairs. Sure, why not?
Gallery: Bayonetta
As silly as it all is, some aspects of the game are treated with care. Bayonetta's controls feel snappy and never drag behind the frantic action. It's an important thing to get right, since you're rewarded for quick evasion in the form of "Witch Time," a slow-motion phase that allows you to get in a few more hits before enemies get back up to speed.
As with Kamiya's Devil May Cry, Bayonetta's combat is concerned just as much with visual flair as it is with improvisation -- enemy weapons can be wielded with ease, and between Bayonetta's sword, guns (four of 'em!), acrobatic leaps and magical finishing moves (including a giant, summoned guillotine), there's rarely a chance to catch your breath and grow bored. Short attention spans, check in here.
You're also probably wondering how the PlayStation 3 version of Bayonetta has turned out. Based on the Tokyo Game Show demo, the Sega-developed port definitely fails a parity check against the Xbox 360 version. As a whole, visuals seem blurrier (possibly the result of a full-screen anti-aliasing solution) and less vivid. The framerate seems less affected, however, and still provides a perfectly playable experience. Unless the final version fares much worse, the graphical discrepancies shouldn't turn you off from what looks to be an excellent action game.
There's still a long wait before Bayonetta arrives in North America and Europe (it's out in Japan this October), so we can only hope that the crowded Q1 2010 schedule prompts Sega to jump the gun.

It seems Kietzmann was trying his best to avoid calling the game tacky, but alas, a spade's a spade. I still think this game is gonna suck; it just appeals to all the wrong sensibilities. I can just picture it getting panned by critics.
Discotheque @ Sep 27th 2009 3:41PM
Except...the gameplay just looks so damn solid in this game. Sometimes I'm willing to overlook lame design choices if the gameplay is this tight.
nriveraexpress @ Sep 27th 2009 4:35PM
thats exactly how i feel disco, and is it normal for a little girl to be wearing lip stick?
Acorn @ Sep 27th 2009 4:46PM
I've seen this sort of comment (@Misanthropic Gamer) quite a lot now, and I simply can't see how you can think this. Do you really think that the sexual content is the reason why people are going to buy this? Haven't you played/enjoyed any of the Devil May Cry games or God Hand?
The Return of Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) @ Sep 27th 2009 8:18AM
C'mon Sega, i had faith in you to make an equal standing port, after Valkyria Chronicles and Yakuza 3..Must have been the work of the Sonic guys >:(
The Return of Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) @ Sep 27th 2009 8:20AM
And while we're on that subject, WE ACTUALLY DO WANT YAKUZA 3!
Rop @ Sep 27th 2009 8:21AM
Hrm... while some of the effects are super cool and all that, I can't help but question how contrived the dialog is. This has always been an issue that irks me, which doesn't sit well too well with the flow of the game, and it puts me off to a great deal.
Having said all that, I do hope they tidy it up a bit... Here's hoping, eh?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 27th 2009 12:45PM
Over the top dialogue didn't see to hurt Metal Gear or Final Fantasy. Ludicrous dialogue has been part and parcel of Japanese content in the US ever since the KANEDA!!! TETSUO!!! junk in Akira.
ShadowOp @ Sep 27th 2009 1:41PM
I think some things just don't translate that well... not sure what the process is like, if they have to fit the words to the mouth movements or not, cuz that would be a pretty big limitation
Vidikron @ Sep 27th 2009 3:31PM
I think the whole game is a bit too over the top. It just look ridiculous.
dood @ Sep 27th 2009 8:49PM
I on the other hand, love it because its so over the top. There're too many games that try to be sensible and real, thats great and all, this is just lovely as well. I likes me some varieties mofoka!
how_much_I_carrot @ Sep 27th 2009 8:23AM
"hyper excess occasionally veers into the distasteful"
exactly what I DON'T like in video games.
oh well.
Surfaced @ Sep 27th 2009 8:38AM
wouldn't have tagged this one as Xbox, myself.
Here they come....
AA-CHAN @ Sep 27th 2009 8:43AM
Please to be removing all dubbing from games and keeping the original JP voices. Well, except from MGS that is.
The Return of Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) @ Sep 27th 2009 8:47AM
I would prefer male characters that actually sounded male thank you very much.
Phizzy @ Sep 27th 2009 9:31AM
So you've never actually heard Japanese dialogue in a game before?
Bronco-fan @ Sep 27th 2009 10:13AM
"keeping the original JP voices"
I too, enjoy listening to a language I don't know a word of.
gobo @ Sep 27th 2009 10:21AM
Dubbing games is nowhere near as serious a crime as it is to dub a film. If the option to hear the original voices is in the game, I tend to use it. If not, no big loss. In-game VO is still new enough that I don't expect it in every title, and the ability perfectly lip-sync a game in any language is almost unheard of... So it definitely isn't a deciding feature in games, at least not for me.
ducttapeBigSexy @ Sep 27th 2009 10:24AM
Actually, I'd have no problem if games included both versions - some people prefer the original Japanese cast. Especially in the case of the PS3 version, I'd bet they didn't use up all the space on the disc...
Just default it to using the English voices, and then everyone would be happy!
shaffy_oppa @ Sep 27th 2009 10:38AM
the games original dub is English -_-
Genoma @ Sep 27th 2009 8:44AM
Watching this feels like eating a bowl of sugar cubes, covered in
honey. Wearing a good suit. In a swimming pool, and being taunted by
bikini babes.
Robobagins @ Sep 27th 2009 8:53AM
Oh gods can't wait for this. I played it three times at PAX. Oh it's everything right in pace and style. And was that a remix'd "Fly me to the Moon" playing in that trailer?
Bowser Rogozhin: England is finished @ Sep 27th 2009 9:32AM
This game has had a lack of interest ever since its initial announcement. I wouldn't go as far and say the game looks tacky as our Boer blogger buddy remarks, but it certainly does look stupid, stupid in a bad way. Freakazoid was stupid but at least there was intelligence behind every line uttered, that hint-hint wink-wink of something bright and clever. This simply looks moronic, and the lack of gamer interest is testament to that. For a moment, at its first revelation, I did try to feign interest in the project, but I felt dirty for doing so. For this is a dirty stupid game.
Platinum Games should be working on a Madworld sequel or something redeeming, rather than a retread of old DMC formulas, formulas which, I might add, played themselves out by the second game.
Nice to see Sega keeping up the gold standard.
acefondu @ Sep 27th 2009 10:53AM
DMC3 is one of the best action games of all time, too bad you quit after the second one.
Nerve Cable @ Sep 27th 2009 12:00PM
I take it you referring to Ludwig? In Afrikaans or South African English, a boer is typically a farmer. Calling someone a boer could also be a derogatory comment made towards someone due to their mannerisms or Afrikaans accent; such a comment is typically made by English speaking South Africans who like to differentiate themselves from the White Afrikaans population. But essentially in everyday language over here we don't use it to refer to the average South African citizen. That's what the term boet or bru is used for :P
Bowser Rogozhin: England is finished @ Sep 27th 2009 12:36PM
Well, you've given me an education. Till today, the only knowledge of the Boers came from reading some Blanche literature, that Theroux documentary, and a couple South Africans who frequent the club I semi-work at. The latter redeemed my impression left by the former two.
Nerve Cable @ Sep 27th 2009 12:48PM
Haha. Glad to hear I've contributed to the growth of knowledge :P Well, I stay on the east coast of South Africa, Durban to be specific.
Durban has a very strong British history, used to be called the last outpost of the British Empire for a while. Its also serves as a tourist destination for South African citizens. As a result alot of the South African population comes down on holiday to the eastern coast. Results in an evident ethnic division between the largely ancestral English Whites and the Afrikaans Whites from the interior.
Moral of the story is, over here you often hear "boer" or "dutchman" being thrown around as an insult towards the Afrikaans population. I apologise for the history lesson :P
Regardless, South Africa is a beautiful country. I strongly recommend anyone who is on planning to travel to come over. It's especially cheap for overseas tourists due to the exchange rates. The exchange rates are also a bit of a bitch for prices of games and consoles for locals though hehe
Misfit Toy @ Sep 27th 2009 9:53AM
This has a stronger appeal to the Japanese audience's sensibilities. I have a feeling it will sell well overseas, but here in the States it will probably be hit and miss with finding an audience. At least an audience that will buy it and not just rent.
Bronco-fan @ Sep 27th 2009 10:01AM
That looked really bad, and people wonder why Japan's stuck in a creative rut. DMC with sarah palin isn't the answer
gobo @ Sep 27th 2009 10:04AM
If it had a different name and lead character, I could see it doing well here. Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, and God of War can be every bit as obscure and tacky as this, and they've all done great. I definitely see Dante's Inferno doing well enough here too, and that follows the same sort of sensibilities. Bayonetta may just be one of those rare cases that, when all the confirmed buyers have gotten their copies, the box-art will go a long way to selling this game to the discerning game shoppers.
gobo @ Sep 27th 2009 10:05AM
Intended as a reply to Misfit Toy.
habibe @ Sep 27th 2009 10:36AM
Let's not forget the king of ridiculous on the verge of retarded story and character delivery: Metal Gear, which I take it get's a pass because of it's "military is serious business" guise.
The Most Interesting Man in the World @ Sep 27th 2009 10:30AM

zfgcmember @ Sep 27th 2009 10:46AM
Inferior PS3 version once again.
Not buying.
Levi @ Sep 27th 2009 10:53AM
personally, I think it looks 1000x better than any Devil May Cry game. The action looks far more intense, the gameplay more varied... And seriously guys, OF COURSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FUCKING TACKY. If tacky isn't your thing, then fine - but nobody should ever have taken this game seriously since it was first announced. The basis of the main character is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, thing is, it doesn't make the game look any less fun!
gobo @ Sep 27th 2009 11:14AM
If anything, it makes the game look more fun.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 27th 2009 12:16PM
I'm with you here. I would have thought more would notice the point of the game is to over-the-top quirky and yeah, tacky too. It's like the video game equivalent of an exploitation film.
I'm giving this game a chance.
JeezWhiz87 @ Sep 27th 2009 12:32PM
It's exactly because of this that I've been more excited about this game than pretty much any other coming out. I love over the top, ridiculous, and outrageous ideas, and this is exactly that. It's a game, it's supposed to be fun. It seems like everyone forgot that. Why so serious?
Audioout @ Sep 27th 2009 2:00PM
God Hand was a masterpiece of tackiness. Didn't help it's sales any but it will go down as a cult classic.
devilsei @ Sep 27th 2009 2:40PM
Yeah, this game has always been seen by me as over the top, and never taking itself seriously.
Remember, suplexing a dragon?
And audio, Godhand is f***ing amazing, I've been playing it again, and one thing I'll never forget is the ending theme song. And Bayonetta, though not made by clover, seems to give off the same vibe as it did, which is
"Don't gotta like me, but start bi*** at me and I'll do something that is practically impossible and has something to do with dragons"
Kamizar @ Sep 27th 2009 3:10PM
"though not made by clover"
You should check out who works at Platinum games.
devilsei @ Sep 27th 2009 3:26PM
That is true kam, I tend to forget that sometimes. They just don't have the Clover label I'm so used to seeing, and I haven't played any of the games out that they've released.
Special Agent Steve @ Sep 27th 2009 11:48AM
For a second I thought it said "Hands on: Beyonce".
Ludwig IS a ladies man.
robotoid @ Sep 27th 2009 2:06PM

Special Agent Steve @ Sep 27th 2009 3:29PM
Yeah, some guy named CONYA called me up and told me she did. Now I know better to accept calls from people I don't know.
TrendGiveAfuck @ Sep 27th 2009 12:11PM
Can you play one of the cool characters instead of Bayonetta herself?
LJ @ Sep 27th 2009 12:37PM
by now we all should now that 99% of the time, port fails...
Pat @ Sep 28th 2009 2:24PM
Not really. By now we know that you are the only one who thinks that. The rest of us are enjoying excellent ports. Oh! And we also now know that you can't spell correctly.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Sep 27th 2009 12:34PM
That looks fantastic. Seriously, this is what I've been looking for in a video game. The visuals and action are just stunning, let's just hope the story is nice.
Soapyshoes @ Sep 27th 2009 12:46PM
I watched the trailer and just about had to push my jaw back into place due to the amount of sheer jaw dropping ridiculousness going on. I mean seriously, like Levi said, it's supposed to be this way. If you don't like the idea of a woman shooting her gun boots at angels while cutting one in half with a summoned guillotine, then go back to playing Tiger Woods.
