The lesson is a million kids will pay 60 dollars for a multiplayer only title (the single player is just local multiplayer with lifeless AI, come on really..) on xbox, and they'll pay 5, 10, even 20 dollars for some free maps, game options. I didn't think it could be done, the sales have spoken.

They sure do. When I bought Braid as their first DOTW, I apparently spent too much so they refunded the difference and threw me an extra 100 points.

and thats why they fixed it within hours of release... This was fixed hours before joystiq even reported on it. If you check Major Nelson's other tweets he says it was fixed 3 hours ago. which was about 2.5 hours before joystiq reported on it.

Yeah! it should be free! I mean this DLC just made itself, not like any valve employees spent months working on it for L4D fanbase, nah nothing like that....

Its more the fact that its free on PC. Valve want for it to be free, just Microsoft is making them charge.

bullshit, this isn't just MS. MS let them have the Survival Pack out free, and Chet Falziek said they were really helpful about it. But then he said he thinks this pack is good and has a lot of value; i.e. worth paying for.

I'm with Bruce on this one. In the interview he basically said that it was worth the price. I think it's free to PC gamers because that would be a huge mess if it wasn't. Unfortunately, console gamers should be used to paying for things. That's why they can charge. Oh yes, people will pay.

@ The Dark Wayne

I may be way off base since I don't follow 360 news too much but I thought I remember hearing that Microsoft gave developers one free update/DLC for their games and then the next one they had to charge for. In other words, the Survival update would have been Valve's free content and they were forced to charge for this new one.

That might be completely wrong but I have a really hard time believing that Microsoft isn't the reason behind this price. Your comment referred to an interview with Valve's Chet Falziek which he flat out said that Microsoft was the reason for the price. According to that interview, the reason they had to charge for it this time is because Microsoft doesn't want everyone to release DLC for free. If they allowed Valve to do it then you would have other developers complaining that they couldn't as well.

"[Microsoft] helped us get the first one out for free," explained Faliszek. "We had the one DLC out for free. And I think... they have to look and say, wow, we're kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that."
Source: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/60365

If Chet was just lying/talking out his ass then I would have expected Microsoft to issue a statement of their own denying it. Since no such statement was released, I have to believe that Chet was telling the truth and that Microsoft is the reason it costs money for the 360.

i was referring to the interview where he says "It's just every time we're going to release DLC, we'll come up to this as well. Microsoft did great support for us in getting the Survival Pack DLC out. We think [Crash Course is] a great value. We're really happy with Crash Course. It's good DLC. It's a lot of fun." But the 1 free DLC may very well be true anyway

Ah ok, my mistake.

To me, those comments sound more like a developer just trying to promote the product and sell it. While they might not have wanted to charge for it since it goes against their business strategy, as long as they have to, they might as well make some money.

If he had come out and said, "We think [Crash Course is] a bad value. We're really disappointed with Crash Course. It's bad DLC. It's not a lot of fun." then no one in their right mind would have bought it.

Just sounds like he is giving the 360 fans a reason to buy it in case they were upset or on the fence - not actually stating that they wanted to charge for it.

I've grown to like MS Points more than PSN wallet funds. I'd much rather pay taxes in one large purchase (either on the service or in a store) than each individual time I spend money on the service. With MS Points, I pay the tax upfront. When I buy PSN funds on the network I'm not taxed, but I'm taxed each time I spend the funds and I'm left with the oddest amounts. It's worse when you buy a PSN cards... I'm taxed when I buy the card (obviously pending your local and state sales tax) and then when I use the funds.

In that regard, I prefer MS Points. I do wish they'd switch to a more transparent number scheme though, with 100 points to a dollar.

True Gobo.

To this day I still can't add money to my PSN wallet with my credit cards. I don't know if it's an address conflict (so says Sony anyway) or what.

I guess I'm screwed either way I dislike both of them.

@ Gobo

You're being taxed for each PSN purchase you make? Where do you live, because in the US there isn't any additional tax. Straight up $9.99 or $14.99, etc;.

It does get annoying that there are pennies floating around in your Wallet. I would rather Sony just charge me the extra penny and get it over with. They're going to get it anyway.

gobo: If a store is charging tax on the PSN cards, then they are not supposed to be doing that. They are tax inclusive items and are supposed to be sold at face value.

I guess I'm mistaken then. I've never just gone into a store and purchased a MS Point or PSN cards, so I've never bothered to single them out on my receipt. I just assumed they carried taxes as everything else does here except gift cards. I stand corrected. I do get taxed every purchase I make on PSN though (except when I'm actually adding funds to my wallet and spending real money).

Considering they've given refunds for past mistakes like this, doing it deliberately is stupid. It takes more money to pay someone to waste time on this.
