Review: Uncharted 2 (single player)

As I emerged breathless from the part where they teach you the controls, the thought that kept running through my head was, "How long can they keep this up?"
Gallery: Uncharted 2
It isn't just the flawless shooting or the note-perfect segments that have you scaling walls and cliffs stories above the ground (though both are just as enjoyable as in the first game); Uncharted 2's specialness is in the way that I never felt like I was in a "level" but rather one incredible, tense, cinematic "Holy shit!" moment after another. (Sorry, I've already ruined the train-ing sequence, I'm not going to spoil any others; suffice to say, this game attains a level of visual and gameplay creativity you'll be lucky to see rivaled this year.)
There's an incredible style pulling everything together, creating a narrative thread that's just as strong as films from this same genre, and it's always backing up Naughty Dog's more mechanical design chops. Perfect example: Though new female companion Chloe looks incredible from a graphical standpoint (as does everything in Uncharted 2) what sells a memorable seduction scene is the way her fingers crawl up our protagonist's chest. It's pure style, and it's exactly the kind of panache that helps this game feel like something more, something special.
The quality of the storytelling, from visual fidelity to the writing, embarrasses other games. Seriously, it's almost depressing when you realize no other developers are putting this level of effort and heart into supporting gameplay with story. Of course, the narrative is helped in no small part by Nolan North
and the rest of a cast that appears to have never been told that video game voice actors don't try this hard.
Considering just how many times I asked myself, "How long can they keep this up?" you can imagine my disappointment when the answer turned out to be, "About half of the game."
After a scorching first five or six hours, the game travels to the Himalayas and the action cools right along with the setting. The stunning set pieces of the first half are replaced by more conventional gun battles, and the engrossing character moments are supplanted by stilted, forced standoffs you've seen in every action movie.
Don't misunderstand, there are still some really enjoyable sequences in the second half of the game, but (save for one or two) they're all pedestrian by comparison to the first half. In fact, I don't think I would have had a single complaint, had I not just scaled the heights that Naughty Dog can achieve when bringing its A-game.
The experience is in no way spoiled, Uncharted 2 is still an absolute "must-buy" for even the most casual action fan. The plodding in the second half is enough to notch down the game from "genre re-defining milestone" to "insanely great action game," but honestly, how can you be disappointed by that?
... Okay, so it's a little disappointing. But just a little.

Sounds good, when I buy a PS3 this will probably be my first game.Until then; "The Conduit GOTY 2009"

@John
Have you ever consider getting into the comedy?!
johnnynumber5 @ Sep 29th 2009 3:32PM
Yeah that was obviously a joke. LOL. Pretty funny joke at that.
John @ Sep 29th 2009 3:49PM
what was so funny about what I said? I simply stated that the game looks good and imo prediction for goty(the key word is imo) so where's the joke?
johnnynumber5 @ Sep 29th 2009 3:54PM
Ok you can stop strining the joke out already. We get it. It was funny the first time but now it's just getting tired.
PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Sep 29th 2009 4:01PM
Yea seriously John, it was funnier the first time around, now you're just milking it
eNrique @ Sep 29th 2009 4:19PM
Ha!
Forget Game of the Year, this is going to be one of the greatest games of all time.
Eh @ Sep 29th 2009 5:06PM
I was going to say "no" but then when I tried to come up with a counter I realized everything has been delayed to early 2010...
So maybe it is GOTY. If Assassins Creed 2 realizes its potential then it could be better than this game.
Sean @ Sep 29th 2009 7:34PM
I reserve judgment until I see Modern Warfare 2.
CGamble20 @ Sep 30th 2009 2:32AM
It'll be tough to beat what is according to metacritic at this time, the second highest rated game of all time.

It was fun watching my friend play this. I was almost convinced it was a movie.

I just got a PS3 not that long ago and I'm playing through the first Uncharted right now. It's getting me really pumped for the sequel. It's my first and only PS3 game I have - good way to start out! Talk about good first impressions. If I take my time and plan it out, I will finish the first one right before this one comes out. Nice!
Kevin @ Sep 29th 2009 3:43PM
That is an excellent game to start out with, good choice. My first venture in the the PS3 was unfortunately LAIR... kind of like loosing your virginity to a fat chick with a snaggle tooth.
uncle jesse @ Sep 29th 2009 3:51PM
I did my research, studied, and checked out the scene. I took my time and didn't rush into it. I wanted it to be with someone special. I'm glad I waited - it made it that much more enjoyable since it was with someone I love.
Sounds like you just got a hard on and went out looking for an easy score.
We're still talking about video games, right?
Kevin @ Sep 29th 2009 4:28PM
And it was very easy, but the slot where LAIR entered my PS3 keeps getting these wierd red sores...or is that the status light?
Viney @ Sep 29th 2009 5:24PM
I heard Lair got a lot better after they patched it to not force the 6-axis controls if you didn't want to use them.
kentuckyfried @ Sep 29th 2009 5:35PM

Research my man, research. Just as one would never impulsively jump into bed with a fat snaggletooth unless completely drunk...

It's a great time to get a PS3 now. I got one last month. Plenty of very good games falling to budget or bargain prices now. Motorstorm 2, Killzone 2, GTA IV looks like it's about to drop in price, MGSIV at reduced prices. Personally I'm going to stick with the reduced price games for now, there's plenty to keep me busy, and then i'll pick up the likes of Uncharted 2, MW2, Lost Planet 2, once they become low priced. I bought the first F.E.A.R. for $23 AUD - bargain. Would like to get my hands on Virtua Fighter V for the same price, and I'm sure they'll be throwing Heavenly Sword and Resistance 1 out the door fairly soon.
vaten @ Oct 11th 2009 4:56PM
Get Killzone 2 and this.
mgsrocks1 @ Oct 11th 2009 6:24PM
Dude I just want to say you have become my favorite user on joystiq. I really hate those idiots who comment on here with nothing worthwhile to say. Thanks for giving me faith that there are levelheaded gamers out there. We should get together and create a podcast :P
RavenLord @ Sep 29th 2009 3:08PM
It's a prime reason that I LOVE this genre. I'll take more games like this over another FPS game any day! Can't wait for this to come out!
james @ Sep 29th 2009 4:15PM
this genres great if its done right.
and obviously here its done very right.
but its also been done horribly wrong. many. many times.
Matt @ Sep 29th 2009 3:09PM
I need a second job for all of the good games coming out this fall. This is a must buy for me. Loved the first game.
Reuben @ Sep 29th 2009 3:10PM
I didn't take well to the first Uncharted, but considering the massive amount of praise it got (and the praise for its sequel) I think I'm going to have to give it another go.
butaneko @ Sep 29th 2009 3:19PM
Yeah I wasn't a big fan either, which makes me wonder if I'd like this one. I'm guessing I'll pick this up used once the fanboy jizz has been mopped up.
decapitor @ Sep 29th 2009 4:59PM
Yes my biggest problem with the first game was that enemies were generated at very precise trip points when walking in to a new area, which felt very cheap considering their insane accuracy levels. Maybe I am just spoiled by games like farcry/farcry2 where you can scout out the danger you're about to walk into and adjust accordingly, but Uncharted really turned me off in this respect.
[ArchiGamer] [Live from Omicron Persei 8] @ Sep 29th 2009 3:10PM
Which reminds me, I still need to get the first one.
McBrick @ Sep 29th 2009 3:18PM
And it's finally cheap so you're timing's good. It sure took long enough.

GiggMan @ Sep 29th 2009 3:12PM
That's one tantalizing screenshot.
Good review but the "How long can they keep that up part" sounds like you were setting yourself up for a let down. Asking yourself that right after the very first section of the game seems rather odd instead of just enjoying the game for what it's worth.
Still a good honest review though.
gotjf @ Sep 29th 2009 3:13PM
How about not worrying how long they can keep it up, and just enjoy it! It took a couple of standard gun battles in the second half to make you change from genre defining to insanely great, strange. I cant wait for this game, the first was one of the best PS3 games out there.
MarkHawk @ Sep 29th 2009 3:33PM
You've never had a game that started off with tons of promise but fizzled out towards the end? I had these issues with Halo 2 and more recently Grand Theft Auto IV. It's a valid point but like mentioned in the review, "Uncharted 2 is still an absolute must-buy" ...
glitched @ Sep 29th 2009 5:06PM
You did miss the memo, it has gone gold, same week(day?) forza 3 went gold
Freak Mojo @ Sep 29th 2009 3:13PM
How can they review a game that isn't final yet? IGN did the same thing. What happens if the game totally gets FUBAR-ed when it goes gold.... or has it already gone gold and I missed the memo?
Lol... anyway... teasing. This game is going to melt faces with Brutal Legend. I hope Naughty Dog and Sony have the online piece ready.... cuz it's going to blow up!
Mr_Ahh @ Sep 29th 2009 3:32PM
fade away silly boy, & think before you type it helps.
MarkHawk @ Sep 29th 2009 3:35PM
Companies mail out the review copy. That is the copy the company says best represents the final build. Sometimes they will make notes to the reviewers such as "DVD lavel not finished" or "X feature does not work for X reason but will by X date"
It's the developers call when they mail out the game.
Freak Mojo @ Sep 29th 2009 3:42PM
Wow... no one seems to be able to take a little jab at what's sure to be an awesome game.
I just think it's interesting that some sites get lambasted for reviewing games before they ship giving them glowing scores and then the game turns out to suck.
I'm one of the ones that will be first in line for this.... I was just playing devil's advocate.... guess it came across more Keanu Reeves than I thought :P
Xenophy @ Sep 29th 2009 4:01PM
The reason why is because they have played it. Do you think that Naughty Dog is going to turn the game into a pile of shit by then? because if not then why would you ask a question like that. If anything the game will get better by the release
glitched @ Sep 29th 2009 5:20PM

Nazi Zombies!
