Dead Space 2 entering production in 'next few months'
LinkedIn continues to provide our only link to the status of a true sequel to Dead Space. A recent job posting on the professional networking site, created by EA senior recruiter Jeff Ballard, reports, "The previous installment in the Dead Space franchise received numerous awards ... and the same core team is in place to create an even better follow up." The posting adds, "The game is in the later stages of pre-production, ready for production in the next few months, with many of the navigational and combat mechanics in place."
With the point-n-shoot spin-off, Dead Space Extraction, releasing this week for Wii, confirmation that the core-series sequel (expected for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC) will soon roll into production phase comes as welcome news to fans looking for the franchise to stay the traditional course. Hopefully, EA and developer Visceral Games' transmissions will continue to pick up from here on out.

She changes her hair all the time. It'll be orange and blonde next week and then cherry red the week after.

You better be playing it on HARD. Dead Space on any other difficulty just sucks. On hard, it's a masterpiece of action-horror game design.
Konstantin @ Sep 30th 2009 9:01PM
I hope they make it non linear plot in a free to explore world, either a ship or a planet, only limited by having to open doors or accomplishing a goal to pass further. In that regard SS2 was perfect. I guess devs will continue to have a zombie like antagonists since its the new thing, although I hope they could present to us the mastermind or the hive-mind and develop its character deep enough as the plot progresses. Shodan was liek ZOMG, pwnz0rz!!!
More creepiness is needed and the mechanics of the game must be polished, i.e. why to have an "air" meter if it is totally unneeded by itself and there are also upgrades for it.
I would love to have more inventory items to aid in plot completion (not just guns and ammo), yes like in SS2 (you should play that masterpiece if you haven't) and a RPG like stats for the main char would be a nice add on.
Melee fights should be a bit more coherent, if I want to stomp I land the feet on the target, not all around it.
All in all Dead Space was good, although one can dream, ain't that right?

The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Sep 30th 2009 12:25PM
Im not sure how I feel about this. I really loved Dead space, i thought it was incredible, but on the other hand, it's ending felt pretty final and fitting. I hope it doesn't continue the story of Isaac Clarke, at least not indepth, maybe as a side story though.
gobo @ Sep 30th 2009 12:31PM
Agreed. I don't want to see the same characters return, the ending was perfect the way it was. I never bothered with the movie, so I'm wondering if a prequel would be possible? Set between the planet and the ship before and during all the wonderful events that went down. Since you aren't in an immediately apparent shitstorm, they could open things up a bit and ultimately wrap up with a wonderfully tragic ending.
Erluti @ Sep 30th 2009 12:32PM
That's the problem with sequels though, isn't it? They get forced into following up on what fans what instead of letting the developer just better explore the universe they created. I really don't think Isaac Clarke has anymore story, but they are going to force him into one!
copa @ Sep 30th 2009 12:37PM
The producer of Dead Space was curiously emphatic that Isaac Clarke survived the end of Dead Space, although I thought the game itself was pretty ambiguous on that point.
It sounded to me like he intends to use Isaac in future installments.
Neuromancer @ Sep 30th 2009 12:57PM
If Isaac didn't come back I for one would be disappointed. The way I look at the ending is it was the traditional American horror movie shock ending that didn't really mean anything.
michas_pi @ Sep 30th 2009 1:17PM
@gobo:
Watch the movie, preferably in 1080p. While some say it has bad animations, I say fuck 'em, it's Dead Space!
Obie @ Sep 30th 2009 1:42PM
First game ended perfectly? Tell that to the Bioshock 2 guys. :p
fohf @ Sep 30th 2009 1:42PM
I'm hoping it's a different protagonist in the Dead Space universe. Isaac was a mute so replacing him with someone else (with a different suit even) wouldn't bother me at all.
Dead Space wasn't about the character you were controlling. It was about the atmosphere and the weapons.
Finito @ Sep 30th 2009 9:27PM
I don't think the protagonist of Dead Space 2 will matter much. The game was scary as hell because of the immersion, part of that came from feeling that you were actually Isaac. His muteness and lack of character was probably deliberate. The next protagonist is probably going to be more of the same.
I actually hated the ending, it was pretty good until the very last second, then it became cheap and left me with a bad taste. :( ..... Still in the top 5 games of this gen for me though.
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 30th 2009 12:27PM
I liked the first but I didn't think it was THAT good. Not enough for a sequel anyways.
jynxycat @ Sep 30th 2009 12:35PM
Your opinion's cool and all, and I'mma let you finish, but,
Dead Space is the greatest survival horror game set in space ever~!
copa @ Sep 30th 2009 12:40PM
Dead Space is exactly how a Resident Evil sequel should have been done. It preserves a lot of the strengths that made the early RE titles so appealing, but it modernizes the controls, the interface, and the gameplay mechanics so you don't feel like you're fighting the game.
RE5 is a little bit embarassing once you've played Dead Space.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 30th 2009 12:40PM
Dino Crisis 3 was pretty... bad.
fohf @ Sep 30th 2009 1:46PM
Yeah, you're right, it wasn't that good. I mean, I only played through it 3 times and got every achievement and then I traded the game and am now regretting that I don't have it anymore so I want to buy another copy cause I want to play it again.
But yeah, it wasn't *that* great. Other than it was.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 30th 2009 12:27PM
I still need to play the first one, but I'm glad after the disappointing sales and rail shooter spinoff they're not giving up on the series.
PedoJokerBear [Planeteer | Power of Gall Bladder] @ Sep 30th 2009 12:28PM
i still need to freaking finish the first one :(
Whiskey Jak @ Sep 30th 2009 12:31PM
Oh shit... she's back!
And yes, I also need to finish the first one, but I'm such a pussy I'm not sure I can handle it...
hplcman @ Sep 30th 2009 12:44PM
I didn't even notice her until I went back and looked after reading your comment! Good spot!
Tom Kalinske @ Sep 30th 2009 12:33PM
I'm glad EA is willing to support this, but may I ask why it's barely going into pre-production? You'd think they would have started earlier. I wouldn't expect this until 2011 at the earliest, but as long as it's good...
gobo @ Sep 30th 2009 12:41PM
At least its a good sign they are keeping specific teams involved with their projects, unlike certain other major third party publishers* who hand projects off every other iteration. They just finished Extraction and are still working on Dante's Inferno, the core group on those games can probably return to the design phase of a new Dead Space now.
*Activision and Ubisoft.
Tom Kalinske @ Sep 30th 2009 12:42PM
Ah, didn't know they were working on DI. That makes sense.
Slam Vanderhuge @ Sep 30th 2009 12:33PM
Wow...can't believe how many peeps haven't finished the original *coughJUSTINcough*. Such a great game, start to finish. Looking forward to jumping into Extraction.
Pdriver @ Sep 30th 2009 12:35PM
The first one was okay. The scripted encounters kinda killed replayability. Bring on co-op! It could be the Left 4 Dead in space!
jasoncps @ Sep 30th 2009 12:36PM
Dead Space was fantastic. Story, graphics, audio, control, and overall gameplay were outstanding.
It essentially did Resident Evil better than Resident Evil 5, by a long shot.
A true sequel is highly anticipated by many many gamers like me who completed Dead Space and loved every minute of it.
