Why just waste time playing video games when you could simultaneously be deleting random files off your computer? It's an unasked question that's been answered by Zach Gage and his game Lose/Lose, a top-down shooter that generates aliens based on files in your computer; files that are permanently deleted when said aliens are killed.
As you can see for yourself, it's a wonderful idea, but it's a shame our title suggestion wasn't used: "Play It In The Library." Pity.
Some sentiments behind the game are good: "Why do we assume that because we are given a weapon an awarded for using it, that doing so is right?"
Unfortunately, the game's message is made meaningless to any actual "player" of the game by the fact that the game design provides nothing interesting to do OTHER than use a weapon. A fixation on violence in gaming is not conqured by players deciding to stop playing, but by game designers flexing their imagination rather than continually retreading the same paths.
I realize that this game's point is not to really be a game, but to raise questions... If anything it's just pointing the finger at the way developers railroad players into taking violent action.. but developers like "Tale of Tales" are making those points much more powerfully by actually going to the trouble of developing relevant games with a non-violent focus, rather than inserting a gimmick into an unimaginative clone of existing games.
As an idea, it's amusing and clever. As a game, it's worthless. Once you've given it enough thought to understand the message (and you don't even need to play it for that to happen), there's nothing more to be gained from it. It's a gimmick.. like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa rather than painting something new that is provocative on its own merit.
You're very right, I probably should have come up with a better example as I didn't mean to insinuate Duchamp was a cop-out artist or anything like that.
I should probably have written a bit less too :p . Old forum habit.
Duh this is not malware or virus. I mean, Ccleaner is not malware or virus just because t deletes content on your computer. It does it with your permission. Just like this its completely up to you, play it or dont.
You know, anyone wanting to play this could just use virtualBox and run it in that. that could even be considered part of the "game". bonus: create hundreds of thousands of bogus, empty files for it to kill.
It's worth noting that you can use VMware to simulate a Mac, therefore going beyond the fear of damaging your computer. I would suggest anyone that wants to try this game do this.
i checked out this guy's website and saw he has an iphone game out recently called Unify. it's kickass! super retro styled and crazy fun. dude's an interesting developer for sure. anybody else try it out?
It's a brilliant "art game", you retards. The point is to make you feel real-life consequences for your actions; If you die, you can't play again, and if you kill an enemy, there are real consequences for your actions. You are actually causing tangible, irreversible destruction.
You don't have to -play- it, you can just -appreciate- it.
Play it in one of your college's computer labs where they have DeepFreeze or some other recovery system.... You can fuck up the system as much as you want and all needed to be done is reboot to restore everything as it was!
