Preview: Crackdown 2

While I wasn't able to play the game's single-player campaign, I was shown a rough portion of it in action. Ruffian lead designer Steve Iannetta and producer James Cope showcased the game's new weapons and enemies (the mutated citizens of Pacific City that were simply referred to as "The Freaks"). Unlike the deathmatch portion of the preview session, this part was interesting.
Gallery: Crackdown 2 (TGS 2009 #2)
While players will still have to contend with gangs throughout the city, the Freaks come out at night -- and increase the tension. According to Iannetta, this new enemy type has been added so that players no longer feel as though they are the most powerful thing roaming the streets. The Freaks -- which look like a cross between Left 4 Dead's zombies and Halo's Flood -- attack in swarms that litter the streets whenever the sun goes down.
I was also shown Crackdown 2's newest piece of artillery, the Magnetic Grenade. Using the weapon, players can tether objects together. During our demo, Cope attached one grenade to either side of a street and a final grenade to a parked vehicle, grabbing the vehicle and using it as an explosive slingshot to stop an incoming enemy assault.

Sadly, deathmatch wasn't as interesting. It's Crackdown ... versus other players. While perhaps a welcome diversion for the franchise, deathmatch failed to demonstrate the possible scope of Ruffian's ambitions for the sandbox title, and the preview was limited to the confines of just a few locked-down areas of the map.
The game was performing well (even in this early build), and many of the standard Crackdown abilities have returned. Players can scale buildings, target individual points of an enemy's body and get in close for a melee kill. According to Ruffian, melee is getting a substantial upgrade to make it more of a go-to option during battle.
Additionally, scattered throughout the deathmatch arena were glowing panels that sent my fully-powered agent flying into the air over rooftops (think: Halo 3's Man Cannons). It's a fun device that speeds up the pace of a game that, frankly, felt a little slow and was noticeably absent of vehicles.
It's the pieces that make Crackdown 2 an exciting title. The new additions look to address the laundry list of requested improvements, with the end goal being to make a great game even better. And there's plenty of time to pull that off before the game's 2010 release.

I really hope they deliver on the MP. It's going to be tough to compete with the likes of Uncharted 2 and GTA IV....atleast in terms of 3rd person shooters.
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Sep 30th 2009 4:28PM
Yeah, I want something like GTA4 where I can access the entire city with a group of friends. I loved those chases between 2 guys in a chopper and two guys in a fast car.
Premature ejaculation man @ Sep 30th 2009 7:50PM
Chase, that's exactly what Crackdown 1 had...Only 2 person coop rather than massive numbers...Hopefully they can increase that count.
Premature ejaculation man @ Sep 30th 2009 7:50PM
Chase? I meant Drew :P
Maulok @ Sep 30th 2009 4:26PM
I still haven't picked up a 360 of my own (play my bro-in-law's), but by gosh, Crackdown and its impending sequel have me ready to pull the trigger.
AvA (ice~) @ Sep 30th 2009 4:26PM
okay but if the deathmatch is JUST crackdown, you know...that's fine. cause crackdown was fun :]
I remember me and my friend would just make our own deathmatch vs each other. it was fun when we had nothing to do. I have really high hopes for crackdown 2, 1 was great, wasn't perfect, but DEFINITELY fun!
joeybeast @ Sep 30th 2009 4:37PM
Sounds like they should add a horde mode.
Yuccadude @ Sep 30th 2009 4:43PM
Crackdown was better before they patched being able to lock-on Firefly missiles onto your partner, because that's what my friend and I did for hour upon hour was to 'accidentally' lock on 4 or 5 rockets to the other person and then try to elude them when they came back for vengeance.
Rhamsey @ Sep 30th 2009 4:29PM
This is awesome, I really hope that they support this game though, unlike the first one.
Chester @ Sep 30th 2009 4:33PM
please tell me those arent ZOMBIES!
ENOUGH WITH THE ZOMBIES IN EVERY GAME ALREADY! So played out!!
Jambi_Bum @ Sep 30th 2009 4:58PM
They aren't zombies. They are mutants that were from the first game. They were just citizens that were experimented on. So no zombies here.
tcc3 @ Sep 30th 2009 4:59PM
Dont be silly. Zombies are undead. These are mutants.
Bubbameister33 @ Sep 30th 2009 6:53PM
Mutants? I thought they were infected. They all look a like to me anyway.
Hoffer @ Sep 30th 2009 4:41PM
I loved Crackdown. Can't wait for its sequel. I doubt I'll be playing the multiplayer.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 30th 2009 4:52PM
I liked this game better when it was called Prototype...
Snowblind @ Sep 30th 2009 4:55PM
I liked Prototype better when it was called Crackdown.
Danthok @ Sep 30th 2009 5:11PM
This game better be good. All they have to do is play Infamous and realize everything they did wrong in the first game.
Don't get me wrong the first game was pretty good, but no replay value. Perfect rental game. Damn Halo 3 beta made me, and about a million other people, pull the trigger irresponsibly.
Electro Poof [Super Nintendo IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING - Now Only $29.99] @ Sep 30th 2009 5:14PM
I liked the troll better when he was called tmacairjordan87.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 30th 2009 5:20PM
Yes I have, and it was very unimpressive but that's beside the point. I said prototype because now that they're putting "zombies" in the game why should I play this when I pretty much already have?
ripslymemc @ Sep 30th 2009 5:32PM
They're mutations of the freaks from the first game, not "zombies". You're asking why you should play this game? that's like asking why you should play this fps over this fps. if you don't feel like playing it, then don't, but don't troll. prototype and crackdown are similar, but not the same.
GiggMan @ Sep 30th 2009 4:56PM
I saw the preview videos of the multiplayer and realized that this is the type of multiplayer game that I hate.
Just a bunch of insane jumping and running around shooting. I thought FPS's were past that by now. For those that like that sort of thing more power to ya.
*I'm not knocking it and I enjoyed the original in 07 but I prefer a more tactical slower pace shooter now*
Peter Moore (peterfuckingmoore.blogspot.com) @ Sep 30th 2009 5:23PM
How dare this game! You clearly are too good for it. You deserve better.
GiggMan @ Sep 30th 2009 6:25PM
You're absolutely right!
I knew Peter Moore was a smart man no matter what others say about.
fohf @ Sep 30th 2009 8:22PM
I feel the same about most shooter games. Death match is played out. It's the same game with different models and maps. I got tired of that shit back in Quake3 and Unreal Tournament.
Marco le Polo @ Sep 30th 2009 4:57PM
Le freaks, eh? This looks like it maybe something of interest.
Katana Master @ Sep 30th 2009 5:28PM
I would laugh if the Halo Reach beta moved to this.
Jakka (DSG Defence Force!) @ Sep 30th 2009 5:29PM
I hope they allow the players to modify the attributes etc. Halo 3's custom game style.
For example, in a capture point/hostage/bomb gametype, the attacking team could have much higher agility + strenght, but the defending team would be excel in every other stat and have homing-missile launchers on top of that to take care of those pesky jumpers.
Viola, a gametype invented in 60 seconds that with a bit of tweaking could be something I'd keep playing for weeks. See how much potential the game suddenly has?
mcatrage @ Sep 30th 2009 5:29PM
Damn I liked being the most powerful thing around.
Neuromancer @ Sep 30th 2009 5:29PM
"According to Iannetta, this new enemy type has been added so that players no longer feel as though they are the most powerful thing roaming the streets."
Last time I checked that was pretty much the appeal of the 1st game.
Boff @ Sep 30th 2009 6:01PM
Agreed.
MORE POWER!
On a side note, glad they're finally showing more of the SP. Personally, I got bored fast of shooting my mates. A rock crawling competition on the beachfront with the buggies was where the fun was at.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Sep 30th 2009 7:48PM
Crackdown is for me the best suprise hit of the generation. The sequeal will dominate and I think they will get the multiplayer right. I really hope anyway.
xbashingx @ Sep 30th 2009 8:15PM
... can i have a bite of you're cheeseburger Jesus
sho220 @ Oct 1st 2009 2:58AM
i see agility orbs! how i love/hate thee! anyways, orbs means i'm in regardless of how good or bad the multiplayer is.
xenocidic @ Oct 1st 2009 8:35AM
Yea - god damnit man, pick up that ORB!!!
damnreds @ Oct 1st 2009 11:06AM
"According to Ruffian, melee is getting a substantial upgrade to make it more of a go-to option during battle."
this is too bad in my opinion. one of the more annoying things about halo multiplayer is how often fights are resolved in melee.
