Despite word from a few European retailers that Sony's download-only handheld, the PSP Go, won't be sold in their stores, the company's UK product manager isn't afraid of poor sales. Even with no ability to read physical media (read as: nothing for retail to sell other than the console), and a £224.99 price point ($362.07 -- seriously), Sony's Claire Blackhouse says retailers are happy to have the new console in their stores. "We were very aware of concerns when we went into it and I actually expected a lot more negative responses than we actually got," Blackhouse told GamesIndustry.biz. "[The retailers] were really quite fine with it."
Furthermore, she says that retailers see the console launch this week as a "way of getting people into the store," that those not able to afford the new hardware will "aspire to it" and "might buy the PSP 3000 instead." She even riffs on a PSP-ified family, where "dad might buy the PSP Go but the kids might get PSP 3000s." Sony's 180° marketing shift we've seen recently for the PSP 3000 certainly helps to serve as proof of the company's belief in this strategy. Only time will tell if it'll work.

Brilliant. So they actually only made like 10 real Go's. It wasn't retailers saying 'no', it was Sony making that up, too. They aren't really even manufacturing Go's. With an over-priced, less desirable PSP out there, the 3000 starts looking pretty good. It's just genius!

Maybe the Go was a ploy all along, just to get more sales for the other psp systems! Stupid, yes...but would anyone be surprised if Sony actually did think of that with all of the bad moves they've done?

I love that the article is about the PSP, comments started with Jurassic Park, and end with Spaceballs. Nice progression.

Doubtful. I know what you meant but it would be the iTouch before the iPhone considering the subscription fees. If someone is going for a handheld gaming device for a loved one they won't be getting an iTouch or a Zune HD. It will either be a DS, DSi, PSP or PSP GO.

the fact is that the disc based midia is dying(the blu ray might be the last one), slowly but dying
sony wanted to start already converting the people to this new era,
but we don´t know if this is too early or on time, it´ll depend on the sells of the psp go

It's not a bad idea for them to start the no-disc revolution. It's a bad idea to try it by introducing a more expensive product with fewer features than its predecessor. If the Go had been a cheaper alternative to the 3000, that would have been a reasonable thing.

Disc based media will die, yes, but it certainly isn't dying yet. The only thing taking a hit are CD sales. DVD and physical game sales are still very strong,

The sales of the PSP-3000 wasn't increased because of the Go, it has increased because there's alot of great games on its way.

I saw this happening it just makes sense you can buy the PSP 3000 for a $100 less, Memory sticks are cheap now, the UMD's are priced the same as the PSN store prices (physical > digital) , and if you pick up used UMDs you are getting crazy deals.
The only thing I see happening are shortages on UMD
I for one am buying my 1st PSP in a month or 2 and it will be a 3000 and I will use the $100 I save to buy some used UMD games.

Good point about the iPod/iPhone. You're quite right, my iPhone has pretty much crushed my DS Lite for gaming on the go. I might argue the point, though, because those devices started with other functionality in mind as the primary. Only later when the App Store opened did they become a gaming device (of varying quality).
The PSP wants to be more than anything else a game console first. Sure it can play music and whatnot, but those are bonus features at best - hardly anyone looking for a new MP3 player asks where the PSPs are.

To its credit, the PSP is a wonderful music/video player if you do want that.

@Beast of the East:
This is true and I use my PSP as a portable MP3 player whenever I go out. During my wait/down times, I use my PSP to play games or watch an anime episode or something.
It's also nice to have it on my person just so people actually pay attention to me or get distracted by my PSP. XD

The Wii? Yeah, I'm sure that Nintendo is about to fire the guy with the plan that consistently outsold their competitors year round. Comments like that are the reason that people should go to college.
