We got our first indication that the Japanese gaming industry wasn't doing too hot in July, when gaming hardware and software sales from the first half of 2009 had dropped 24 percent from the same period last year. The recently released sales figures from the first half of fiscal 2009 (which runs from March 31 through September 28) are equally downtrodden: According to the industry analysts at Enterbrain, the Japanese games market fell 10.5 percent during this six-month period. That figure represents a 15.1 percent drop in hardware sales and a 7.5 percent decline in software sales.
The various models of the Nintendo DS were the biggest sellers during this period, moving nearly 1.7 million units combined. Appropriately, the top two selling titles during the half-year were Dragon Quest IX, which sold nearly 4 million copies, and the recently released Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver editions, which sold a little over 2 million combined. Not faring quite as well are the PSP (813k units sold), Wii (594k units sold), PS3 (581k units sold) and Xbox 360, which moved a paltry 137k units in the first half of the fiscal year.
No use crying over spilled milk, we suppose. Things can only go up from here! Unless, of course, they continue to go down. That's also an option.

I have the solution to saving the Japanese market. Everyone in Japan must go out and purchase FIFA 10 on October 22nd.
It's crazy, but it might just work.

I heard that everyone in Japan had just bought Madden 10. They will be unlikely to buy FIFA because of this.

I told Capcom they should have made MH3 for PS3 also but they didn't listen, and now look whats happened.

Jesus Christ bud are you TRYING to start a war between fanboys?! can't we just leave the whole "MH3 should have been on PS3" subject alone?

Well I told Nintendo to make Mario Bros. for Xbox and PS3 like 4 years ago but did anybody listen? No. When I tried to follow up with Shiggy by surprising him at his apartment did I get a hug and "Thanks, for the tip, buddy!"? Nope, just a face-full of mace and a restraining order. When I sent in a bomb threat to NoJ and threatened to detonate unless they complied with my demands did I get a ticker tape parade and a hero's welcome. I certainly did not, unless you count a police beating and a prison riot as celebratory in any way. I tell ya, you can't tell these big companies anything.

MH3 was an unknown quantity in any instance, since the series only became *really* popular after the 2nd PSP game, so we couldn't be sure how that would translate onto the less-popular consoles
MH3 did quite well, and Nintendo bent over backwards to accomodate Capcom in it's design, something that they famously never do for anyone.

Calm down folks, it was a joke. Although I would really like to see it on PS3.
And I have even contemplated getting a Wii for it...

Dear lord, I know the Japanese don't like the 360 but 137k is kind of excessive isn't?

I know, right? Japan's mom is all "Well, you only have enough allowance to buy one game this console cycle, so you can either buy the 10 billionth uninspired iteration of a generic genre game now, or you can wait for like a decade for the next Gran Tourismo." And Japan is all "That's not fair! I hate you I hate you I hate you!"
True story.

Except that that's the only one they're still buying.

Couldn't it just be that everyone in Japan who would want to buy a new system has already purchased one by now?

PS3 is certainly seeing a revival (it may surpass the Wii overall in total units sold this year, though it's next to impossible for it to catch up in the long run), since PS3 is finally getting a lot of the software that a lot of people bought a PS3 back in 2006/7 for in the first place. Today in Japan, Wii got it's own price-drop, and it's got three big titles coming down the pipe (Samurai Warriors 3, NSMBWii, and Tales of Graces) left for this year. It should be fine overall.

America!
Well, actually it's kind of true. The japanese economy is in the toilet. That's why they aren't spending money. And it's in the toilet because America's economy is in the toilet.
So for once, it's totally legit to blame america for problems on the other side of the world. Oh happy day!

It's the economy. No one is spending over here right now, so it's hardly a surprise game/console sales are down. Sales for everything else are down too.
If the yen drops to a decent rate, or the US/Europe starts buying again, then sales'll pick up over here too.
