Matt Hazard returns in Blood, Bath and Beyond
You probably weren't eagerly awaiting the return of self-aware game hero Matt Hazard. Oh sure, it's kind of a funny premise, but so was Ishtar and we all saw how that worked out. Besides, if you want to softly chuckle as you play a miserable game, the first Matt Hazard title is probably available for a pittance.
Regardless, we've brought you to this post to alert you to the existence Matt Hazard: Blood, Bath and Beyond now (officially) coming to XBLA and PSN. It's a really great name, but judging from the screenshot, we're assuming Darkened Structure was taken.

That screen shot looks very Shadow Complex-y.
Silicon Siren @ Oct 1st 2009 6:11PM
I know right? Epic totally invinted this genre *blows on Contra cart*
uncle jesse @ Oct 1st 2009 6:15PM
Don't get all worked up over nothing now. I never mentioned anything about anyone inventing a genre. Just look at the picks and tell me what you think it resembles most and get back to me when you're finished blowing things.
Casey @ Oct 1st 2009 7:03PM
First thing I thought of, good call. Considering the first Matt Hazard blew too hard to get that cartridge working again, being Shadow Complex-y is a great thing.
To defend Uncle Jesse comparing Contra to Shadow Complex is like comparing Netscape to Google Chrome. . . . get over it.
Mal F4cti0n @ Oct 1st 2009 8:50PM
Poor man's Shadow Complex-y
hector88 @ Oct 1st 2009 5:40PM
I think Matt Hazard will be more enjoyable as a sidescroller.
Heavytoka @ Oct 1st 2009 5:47PM
Agreed
uncle jesse @ Oct 1st 2009 6:24PM
Same.

Ugh, what a colossal disappointment that was

Eat Lead was so much fun and a hilarious game.
whymog @ Oct 1st 2009 6:00PM
Simpsons did it!

Aw, I was just about to say that!
If I had gun, I'd shoot you.
whymog @ Oct 1st 2009 8:14PM
Yeah, well, you don't.
Levi @ Oct 1st 2009 6:05PM
I dunno Joystiq, considering this is a different genre, I'd give it a shot. I'm always game for more sidescrollers, and a couple of these screens look promising! Is that a Mirror's Edge reference?
RoMH is still on my list despite the bad reviews. Anybody got an extra copy for PS3 laying around? :D
Silicon Siren @ Oct 1st 2009 6:12PM

No... that's totally not a Mirror's Edge spoof.
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Oct 1st 2009 6:14PM
Are you in Europe by any chance? This game is dirt cheap on play:

Not that I'd ever want it, but to each his own. ;)
Markusdragon @ Oct 1st 2009 6:38PM
Hold on... Are those Mounties in the Mirror's Edge environment?
Levi @ Oct 1st 2009 7:15PM
Yeah, I think they are mounties... That's actually pretty funny hahah imagine Mirror's Edge 2: Canada Future!
Mr. Manly ESC Mcbeefington Ferguson The Second @ Oct 1st 2009 6:37PM
Matt Hazard was a good idea poorly implemented.
Serisouly making fun of every FPS ever should be enough material but the game was just lazy.
pibs @ Oct 1st 2009 6:41PM
Blood, Bath and Beyond sounds like an awesome store.
Jose42 @ Oct 1st 2009 6:48PM
Does anyone at all care about Matt Hazard?
Bubbameister33 @ Oct 1st 2009 9:31PM
Obviously someone does.
1251 @ Oct 1st 2009 6:49PM
While all other sites rightfully call Epic out for not separating themselves from Metroidvania- Joystiq takes it upon themselves to think Shadow Complex should be given credit.
No, Crash Commando didn't utilize this feature nearly an entire year before SC or anything, and no EPOS wasn't able to create an awesome multiplayer game with it or anything. Epic did it all, apparently.
AoE @ Oct 1st 2009 9:09PM
wait... what? Did you forget your meds today? What are you jabbering on about? There is no mention of SC anywhere in the story.... where does this jibba-jabba come from? Some random commenter mentioning it looks like a game they've most likely played before instead of mentioning one they haven't?
Look dude I hate to burst your bubble. But the side-scroller is not new, the 3d sidescrolling metroidvania game isn't even new. For example, you remember Terminal Reality's BlowOut, right? I assume you do, for all the rage and indignation you bring to bear here I would expect you've played every game in this genre. Speaking of which, why don't you tell us about the 3D metroidvania style titles that came before BlowOut? You know what they are, right? If not, why are you being so huffy and acting like an expert?
Powerlord @ Oct 2nd 2009 1:23AM
@AoE: "Darkened Structure" links to the shadow-complex tag.
Anyway, the reason Joystiq references Shadow Complex specifically is because of the "enemies in the background that can shoot at you" bit that Metroid and Casltevania don't have. This mechanic is clearly present in these screenshots.
1251 @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:57PM
^Crash Commando HAS the 3D shooting from the background! You can go into FPS on the turret, and of course from the other perspective, someones shooting you from the other side of the map!
Just pointin' it out, wasn't in a fit of anger like AOE suggests..
Gamer4Life @ Oct 1st 2009 7:00PM
If they release this for disk I'll buy it but not on digital download (I rarely buy those).
1251 @ Oct 1st 2009 7:05PM
In the post, it clearly states it's coming to Live and PSN.
To print out covers, instruction manuals, even the discs- this title may be deemed a commercial failure, if Joystiq's bias doesn't deem it so already.
Filthy Assistant @ Oct 1st 2009 8:50PM
Yeah, Joystiq's bias. Not just that the other game was a total flop and not very good too.
Tim Dunlap @ Oct 1st 2009 7:37PM
"click for high-res gallery ... of Matt Hazard"
Loved that caption! I was laughing hard at that.
CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 1st 2009 7:53PM
From full game to XBLA? If this doesn't work, where can they go then?
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Oct 1st 2009 8:08PM
ASCII-based Rougelike.
MrKlorox @ Oct 1st 2009 8:15PM
Er...Joystiq. I'm almost certain it's not supposed to be Blood (COMMA) Bath and Beyond. It's supposed to be pronounced BloodBath (like a bath of blood) and Beyond.
Sigh.
Mal F4cti0n @ Oct 1st 2009 8:57PM
I am sure that it is Blood, Bath and Beyond as in "Bed, Bath and Beyond"...it is a play on words as in Play On Words.
Wow.....sigh.....must we explain everything to the dumb?
Thought the best is when the dumb try and correct the smart and do it in a snide manner.
AoE @ Oct 1st 2009 9:13PM
@Mal F4cti0n,
No... we really don't need to. To be honest, I think it's actually a lot more fun to watch them make asses of themselves and learn the hard way.
However, since you're correcting someone else, it makes you fair game... I think you left an extra "t" at the end of "Though" ;)
Mal F4cti0n @ Oct 1st 2009 11:52PM
That was not me....that was my keyboard.
And spelling mistakes on threads don't count as "being dumb".
MrKlorox @ Oct 2nd 2009 5:33AM
No fucking shit it's a pun. Duuhhh. Thank you captain goddamn obvious.
I personally find it laughable that every tiny little detail must be disclaimed in explicit detail so the norms who think they're actual cognitive beings can comprehend.
Wow. I thought it was obvious in my post that I FUCKING GOT THE SHITTY PUN.
Think outside of that port-a-potty you call a brain for once, Joystiq simps.
Jack Tretton @ Oct 1st 2009 9:41PM
Oh, yeah, like the guy in the $3,000 suit will come back to voice the sequel, COME ON!
Peels87 @ Oct 1st 2009 10:10PM
he made a huge mistake voicing the first one
whymog @ Oct 2nd 2009 12:29AM
Look at sequel, Michael!
Jack Tretton @ Oct 2nd 2009 8:55AM
+8 to whymog.
Yesterday morning the line "Look at banner, Michael," popped into my head for some unknown reason.
Akronon @ Oct 2nd 2009 1:17PM
+8 to all three of you.
I'm pretty sure he's taken some forget-me-nots so he won't remember the first one and won't have to taste the sad anymore.
Freakwincy42 @ Oct 1st 2009 10:30PM
the original had an AWESOME premise, and a hilarious backstory. the game itself was... playable. not good. playable. BUT, it had Will Arnett and NPH, which made it amazing. plus, the game ejaculated trophies all over my hard drive. and this looks like shadow complex... so... i might check it out. maybe. if it has NPH in it.
Jacksons @ Oct 1st 2009 10:57PM
I still like the idea of the franchise, even if the first one wasn't that special in execution. I'll buy it.

SuperA187 @ Oct 2nd 2009 10:55AM
I WANT THIS GAME! The last one was great!
Jim @ Oct 2nd 2009 11:49AM
I liked Eat Lead. It was fun, funny, and kind of original in the same way Airplane (the movie) was.
I will probably check this one out.
