What do we know about Japan? Even after those weird commercials, the PlayStation 3 has managed to outsell the Wii in Japan following the (what you might call) successful launch of the newly "encheapened" PS3 Slim. Japanese market research firm Enterbrain estimates that from August 31 through September 27 309,939 PS3s were sold; a new monthly record for the console.
If you've been following our weekly Japanese Hardware Sales updates, this is no surprise to you. The usually dominant DSi and DS Lite combo sold a combined 297,060 units, which came alarmingly close to the Sony record, considering the 7,350 percent boost the PS3 saw post-Slim. It's notable that this Bloomberg report doesn't even list the Wii's monthly sales; however, with Nintendo's Wii at ¥20,000 (down from ¥25,000) starting this month, we imagine next month's chart will look a little different.

Gonna need MORE Exclusive Wii games for that to even matter over there....or release a barrage of colors, ESPECIALLY with FF13 right around the corner

I dunno, Nintendo seems to be doing ok for themselves without releasing a lot of games....

In all honesty...I don't see the Wii price drop doing much damage. Its only $50 less...as it stands a PS3 @ $299 is still more attractive than a @ Wii $199. It would sadding me greatly to know that there are that much people in Japan waiting to buy a Wii, but that extra $50 (yen in you will) was the deal breaker, to the point that now with the $50 price drop, all hell is gonna break loose. Just my take on the matter...but I am not Japanese and they are known to be alil sidways with common western sense.

Yeah the thing is people bought the Wii because it was cheap and fun already, I doubt there is a massive market of people who held off for an eventual $50 price drop.
Considering all your getting for $100 more, it's not exactly a bargin.

@James: Don't think '$100 more', think 'half as much again'. The difference between $200 and $300 in impulse-purchase terms is a LOT.
I agree it's probably not going to make that huge a difference (in the medium term), but it will probably solve their recent, steady 'not quite selling enough' problem.

Yeah but everybody who bought a PS3 that month had already bought a Wii... So that's not so surprising.

Actually, what 'they' said was that the ps3 was doomed because it's so damn expensive. That's all changed. Well done, Sony, for finally pulling up your socks.

Well when people said that, it seemed that way.
The PS3's main 2 problems were that it was ludicrously expensive, and that it was also expensive to develop for, and due to a low install base, games didn't get much profit either. Now the price is reasonable, and there are some great system sellers for the platform. It's still more complex to develop for than the 360 or the Wii, but since the install base is increasing rapidly developers can afford to spend that extra money since they'll be getting it back in sales.

How are there people still buying the Wii? Seriously. That's not a "hater" comment. I'm a Nintendo Fanboy and I will shit ice cubes if the Wii gets a significant boost after its price drop.

I agree with you. Almost everyone(ok not literally) has a wii now, i don't think that the price drop will help sell more copies! Who would buy a second wii? No one.

I recommend a strict diet of ice cream and frozen margarita to assist and prepare your bowels for your future 'ice cube shitting'. Make sure you pack some warm toilet paper.

I never really understood the need to get more than one of any type of console, except if you want to link up with someone else in the same house online of course. If I was to get more consoles it would have to be a 360 or Wii so I could play the exclusives.

$200 is a big psychological tipping point, i think. Yeah, it's only a $50 difference, but anything above $200 just sounds a lot more painful than anything at $200 or below
Though i would bet that, like other things Wii, the price-drop won't be as front-loaded in sales as the competitors. It'll do well in the long run, definitely, but not the insanity we saw with PS3 (and a lesser extent with 360)

do you realize how many people there are on this planet? The wii selling millions and millions every month prob' still isnt near half of how many people are in japan alone.

I expect both the PS3 and Wii to be pretty even next Month even with the Wii price cut.I doubt that the price cut to ¥20,000 is not really going to excite to many of them.

wait really can the Wii and Ds still sell though? I am not huge in business but isn't there a point were the product can't possibly be bought by any more people? Even if more people were out there with out the product, aren't those people the type that were never going to buy it in the first place?

I'd say that that's primarily why Wii sales have slowed down to the degree that they have. It's amazing that they're still selling anything but I guess every once in a while something good/popular comes out - Monster Hunter Tri for example.
