Anyway! We understand that everyone isn't lucky enough to have a roommate or friends to enjoy games with, so we should point out the co-op above can also be played via the internet, as well -- just, you know, not split-screen. You could do that, but then who would you punch for not having your back? Yourself? Come on! Think, people.

Me too. I was amped for this game when I saw the screens back in early 2008. With its realistic setting and graphics, it looked like mad max meets pitch black. Now, I feel the new art style is just so lame. All the grit and vulnerability is gone, leaving me with visuals that just look cartoony and dull. I feel like I’m watching screens from a flashy arcade shoot-em-up rather than the epic science fiction experience they promised earlier in the game’s development.

Well most games look a tad different in split-screen mode.
It's like a gorgeous siamese twin model in a bathing suit. At first it might creep you out, but in time you will learn to appreciate these new possibilities. And after all, you can even bring a friend along for some fun.

Sure it's an RPG... that doesn't excuse it from being mechanically bland. What does customization matter if all you do is run around and circle strafe limited AI opponents? I enjoyed Oblivious enough, but at least it's melee system had timing. this just looks like the original doom... with much nicer graphics and a ton of RPG elements that don't change the fact that you're just running around in the open shooting everything

I kinda agree with you. I think RPG players are used to the combat not actually having much depth though. Go back to games like pokemon and you just press a to use an attack, fallout 3 you use VATS and it does the shooting for you. I just don't think the audience is really interested in shooter mechanics as much as they are in how many guns you can have, quests you can complete, and levels you can climb.
Personally, I feel that all those things are welcome additions to any shooter, but only if the core shooter gameplay is actually fun, which borderlands doesn't look to me.

For me, VATS still adds a 'thinking' element. Strategy. Pokemon still has strategy in what creatures fight against what (what raises and lowers your chances)
this video just looks like 'run around shooting everything in front of you'
probably grind levels to become stronger -- which may give some branching play styles like stealth (?) tanking (?) or boosting allies (?)
that still teeters on the 'so what' category for me: wow already does that. probably better than this will, albeit without guns.

I hope the RPG elements fill in for what we DON'T see here.
For example, if there are abilities that do things, like, say, "Allows for crippling damage when shooting enemies in the hand" or "Shots from big guns force enemies to the ground, disabling them as they lay on their backs", or even "shots have a change to blow off targeted limbs", then the game would be taking full advantage of RPG character growth.
However, if it's just GUNS GUNS GUNS! that do nothing else but hit non-responsive enemies, then yeah, the gameplay would be pretty lame.
Guess we'll have to wait and see...

Agreed... if its just "Oh look! I got another gun that's pastel pink instead of green!", repetition would be unavoidable.

Right? I had high hopes for this title... even the cell shaded look wasn't turning me off. Now that I've had a glimpse of gameplay, I can't help but feel like this will play like every other generic fps out there w/ rpg light additions... kinda like perks in MW. Ah this just moved down the priority list of games i'mma play this holiday.

I guess I don't know why it's okay for an RPG to have blah mechanics? It feels like a strange argument / excuse to me when BioShock and DaisEx are old news AND look better crafted.
More importantly, shooting in BioShock wasn't super great either. However, that game felt like there was more depth to what the player could do WHILE PLAYING THE GAME. Not just what the player could do to upgrade their stats / damage modifier.
I love RPGs but just slapping a hack kneed shooter into them doesn't excite me.

Yep customizable, randomized item drops in a game where you grind enemies has always been a failing game mechanic. Shhh, don't interrupt me Blizzard, I'm trying to make a point here....

I think the title'll will be OK as long as the A.I. is not dumb as bricks. might have to tweak the difficulty to see that.
Hopefully the reviews are going to be positive. I know little to nothing about how it's going to play out at this point, the media coverage has not been extensive.
The only part I don't like is all the little numbers coming off of the enemies as you shoot them. And a big bonus to this perspective is that things will probably not get as hectic as say, playing Marvel Alliance where I commonly lose track of where my guy is b/c there's simply too much stuff happening on the screen, plus everything's rendered so small.
It's really too bad that Fallout 3 didn't have better FPS mechanics; that would've pretty much made it almost perfect.

Can we please put this into perspective? There aren't that many enemies in that video, a lot less than the amount that have appeared in other trailers. On top of that, they're just normal grunts, so they're supposed to be easily killed. Take a look at the other videos, you can see parties taking on large groups of enemies with badasses thrown in for kicks. And I'm not exactly sure what "bland mechanics" people are talking about... pointing and shooting? Grenade tossing? Strafing? You don't even get to see the specific character abilities and techniques, or the skill trees (which I REALLY want to see). Is it as fast paced as other FPS shooters? Not sure. Is it as paced as a dungeon crawler a la Diablo? Yes, and that's exactly what it is meant to be.
Al I'm saying is, 1:03 != however many hours of gameplay Borderlands offers.

People are more talking about how the AI is almost non existent. The enemies mostly just stand there, or walk right at you. Shooters have come a LONG way since games with AI like this.
And yea, I realize it's an RPG, but the core game mechanic to drive the RPG elements is first person shooting. If that mechanic isn't up to par, which it seems it isn't, then do millions of guns really make up for it?
Take Call of Duty 4 multiplayer. The core mechanics are fantastic, a shooter through and through, but it still has all the same (if more limited) rpg elements that this does. You still level up and unlock and customize weapons, but the process of doing so is just as fun as any other shooter. In this video, the actual combat looks bland and boring, and the ai is sluggish and dumb. Regardless of the RPG elements, you're going to be spending most of your time shooting things, and if those mechanics aren't up to par, is leveling up really worth it?
I'm from the FPS audience, not an RPG player, and so I really don't understand why having ten million guns is important if using them isn't as fun as using the 5 or so guns in left 4 dead.
If you're looking for a pure RPG experience, fine, you might like this. But the fact is that the game is an rpg AND a shooter, and from the looks of things it's lacking in the shooter department.

Well, bum rushing you is still better than just standing there like a retard. Alright, compare it to FEAR or Halo, where enemies actually will at least move around, or take cover. Like others have said the AI in this game looks like it's from DOOM. And while doom is one of my favorite games, AI like that doesn't cut it anymore.

The L4D characters are supposed to rush you, it's supposed to be a freaking rush of zombies. That's what zombies do.
But at least they, you know, move. And react to getting shot. They don't just stand there firing off one pistol shot every couple of seconds while not moving and not reacting to getting shot at all like we were playing a game straight out of 1995. I mean, characters in the original Doom had more reaction to being shot than these guys do.

When I saw the first article about this game long ago, I was super psyched.
Then every peek I've had since then lowered my expectations each time.
This caps it... a definite "no buy, no rent, no buy".
Maybe I'll download the bit-torrent to play 10 minutes of it just in case.

I'm sorry, I know I'll be voted down for this, probably by the company's viral department, but this game looks kinda awful. I was hyped when I've first caught wind of it, and I'm psyched about the idea, but...
To begin with the worst offense it has Doom 2's AI with enemies standing around getting shot in the face. I know I haven't played the game but from a gameplay point of view it looks like Serious Sam has more depth and, while Fallout 3 suffers from the similar bad AI and clunky animation, at least it has the VATS system to supplement combat somewhat by combining it with the RPG elements. As it is, it's just a run and gun game. Even if it has a million stats and a gazillion guns, you still have to shoot people in the face whether with a sniper rifle, a rocket launcher, a shotgun or just stab 'em. There's no stealth, no clever strategy, no hacking of turrets, no cover system (and if there is, it's not much good if the enemies are always running around in the open). To sum up, Fallout 3's way of overcoming the shitty half of the action RPG combo was to beef up the RPG and add VATS. This game doesn't, even if I AM dying for a split-screen shooter ever since I've finished Gears of War 2.
Then there's the graphics, which are technically unimpressive with flat mountains, same-y plasma explosions, really low poly models and clunky animations of yore. But Blizzard, for example, was always under-par technically - and still blew my mind with art design, style, flair and performance. This game is neither here nor there, with seriously ugly terrain and not being able to decide whether it's cutesy cartoon or gritty comic-book. Instead, it now looks like a cartoon from the 80's, like Biker Mice from Mars or the original Transformers. It's like the art designer pulled towards cute cartoon and the design team really opted for dust bowl and they've settled for 'nobody's gonna be happy'. It's too well lit and not at all gritty in art design, yet it's supposed to be a post post modernist, post apocalyptic tale about badasses. There's a guy blowing off his brains on the cover. if we've ever been complaining about shooters being too brown, this game is a cel-shaded brown polygon all over with black contours.
As for the RPG elements I'm really surprised so many of you defend it. 1000+ guns? Are you aware that having around 20 different guns with 10 muzzle options, 10 handle options, 10 damage enhancing options and 10 ammo expansions covers that? It's not like you're going to be able to set up a gun that shoots marshmallow unicorns, you're just going to have the same gun you're going to need to level to face higher level enemies. We've had this mechanic in Daggerfall like two decades ago. Hell we've had it in any RPG with generated content, and it's a damn plague in MMORPGs. And the same goes for a 1000+ quests. Yeah, I saw the objective in the trailer. It was "kill 8 bandits". I'm assuming that's 8000+ bandits, maybe collect a package every now and then.
So bottom line is that what we're seeing hyped here might just be a somewhat ugly AND uninspired first person shooter which prefers killing 8 bandits and collecting scalps to having actual set-pieces and instead of having 80 great quests and having 30 customizable weapons offers us thousands upon thousands of reasons to grind just to get higher stats. So it's an offline MMORPGer.
The funny thing is that I might be totally freakin' wrong. I might love it to bits and it might be genius under the hood. I totally accept this as I've never actually played the game. But according to the bullets in every brochure and preview ever, it looks like clichéd mechanics combined into one unattractive package without a drop of imagination from the overarching art design down to the wise-cracking robot.

Actually the art style reminds me of XIII, which may be where my concern comes from. XIII had bland gun play, mostly linear level design, and bland AI... and while I like the idea of cell-shaded-like graphics, it didn't pull them off either. Borderlands looks much better, but still frumpy.

My biggest concern is the guns honestly, but I still have faith. Have you seen the video of the shotgun with a modified firing pattern that shot in a horizontal wave on the floor? There's already been a lot of other crazy things following in the same vein so I highly doubt it will be shotguns, SMGs, rifles, and pistols with modified stats. Fucking hell, you don't even mention the elemental shit they toss as additional stats to the guns.
I'd look a BIT more into this before judging it on this clip, because this makes the game look god awful.

Anybody saying all the videos and enviroments look the same need to do a little more reading. Gearbox have stated all videos shown so far only show upto level 15, the level cap is 50. There will be snowy mountain region, military bases etc. Also take into account this video is level 2-3.
I have every faith this game will be great. Vehicle combat, millions of guns, Pvp, 18 rated for some over the top comedy and violence, playing with 4 friends, 4 classes, talent trees the list goes on.
October 23rd cannot come around quick enough

YES it's great to see that this game has split screen! Too many games skimp on it or throw it out altogether (I'm looking at you, COD4). Good to see it's going to be implemented in borderlands, and in vertical split mode too! That's the way to go these days, since splitting a widescreen tv horizontally makes it too wide.

Seriously, we've got some damn good games rollin out despite the Q1 2010 delays. I've got a decent eye for videogames. Like most of you, I watch them all through the dev stage, and this game looks very promising.
Of course, I said that about Too Human. In my defense, I figured anybody who was willing to build a new game engine in mid development had to have something good.

Trailer Pros:
1) Art style is still really damn awesome.
2) Guns sound great, seem like they have awesome feedback.
Trailer Cons:
1) What the hell is the enemy AI doing?
2) Why are the adversaries nothing more than damage sponges?
3) Why is the main strategy you're using "walk up to enemy so your shot never misses"?
4) Very repetitive looking even from just a minute of gameplay.
