FIFA 10 debuts with record UK sales lead, Layton maintains second
FIFA 10 -- the Madden of Europa -- had the most successful "all formats" launch since Grand Theft Auto IV in the UK, according to Chart Track. First week sales of the footie fiesta grew by nearly 48 percent over its predecessor's opening week a year ago. This was the highest-selling launch of a FIFA game ever, with the Xbox 360 generating 48 percent of sales, PS3 46 percent, and the remaining formats making up six percent.
Professor Layton and Pandora's Box (the Diabolical Box in the States) held onto the number two spot from the week prior, while Halo 3: ODST sales dropped 75 percent to the third spot, after holding last week's crown.

Bleats me.
Another post involving FIFA = another day Joystiq's sheep joke goes over my head.

that new blog post was pretty damn funny though
Mr Khan @ Oct 5th 2009 9:41AM
Still so heavily unbalanced in PS360's favor, despite the fact that Wii is otherwise doing quite well in Britain.
Madden of Europa indeed. With all the same sell-through features.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Oct 5th 2009 10:20AM
No suprise there really. The game is designed around the ps/360 controllers. The wii versions of fifa are always awful two-bit afterthoughts. Fifa isn't the best looking game on the 360 or ps3 but it looks a fuck load worse on Wii.
Bad visuals + dumb downed Fifa = poor sales for Wii.
Ashitaka @ Oct 5th 2009 4:45PM
Basically, the only reason for buying FIFA for the Wii is if you only have the Wii.
Uncontrol @ Oct 5th 2009 9:41AM
Holy crap, Professor Layton beat ODST?
Hydrophobicfish (PSN: HydrophobicFish) @ Oct 5th 2009 10:29AM
Not surprising, Europe is a completely different market than America. They don't need to inject testosterone into their veins every 20 seconds via playing Halo/Gears.
We, however, do. WARGARBL WHERE'S GEARS OF WAR 3!?
Jerk Face @ Oct 5th 2009 11:12AM
But these are the UK sales numbers, not all of Europe. UK's market is arguably pretty similar to the US, actually.
xtremeholymuffin @ Oct 5th 2009 11:12AM
wow, stfu
Discotheque @ Oct 5th 2009 11:41AM
Nice one troll. I hope you also believe Uncharted 2 fits into that genre aswell. Otherwise you're just a hypocrite (I'm leaning towards the latter for you).
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Oct 5th 2009 9:45AM
Kinda surprising that Sigma 2 isn't higher up on the list. Or perhaps it's because it was released just before list was released?
Jerk Face @ Oct 5th 2009 9:53AM
I just beat Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box this weekend. So damned good!
I also beat ODST this weekend. Spoiler alert: While the game is great, the ending is more like a 'meh'nding.
Also, Brits love football.
YoshimiMac @ Oct 6th 2009 3:14AM
Obviously a popular game, but the increase in sales from last year could be put down to some supermarket chains selling the game for £25 for the first weekend / week.
bigphil2003 @ Oct 5th 2009 10:14AM
Only reason it sold so well is because Tesco and Asda were selling it at £25 over the weekend
Kyle @ Oct 5th 2009 2:30PM
Not really. Supermarkets barely get any stock and sell out very fast, they just sell it that price (and at a loss, I might add) to get people into the stores. Dedicated game retailers have been selling barely anything but Fifa for the whole weekend, so I'd assume most of the sales are from those.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Oct 5th 2009 10:15AM
Wow! PS3 sales pretty much = XB360 sales?! Wow! First Batman, now this. Do you think PS3 can overtake X in the long run?
Tom Kalinske, CEO. @ Oct 5th 2009 10:18AM
Probably, mainly because the 360 will have been discontinued long before the PS3. I don't see Microsoft implementing a 10 year life cycle for it.
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 5th 2009 3:54PM
Long run?
More like, after christmas.
Slim is da new hotness, the momentum behind the PS3 (seemingly *still* building as word of mouth spreads) now must be scaring the living shit outta Microsoft.
butaneko @ Oct 5th 2009 10:16AM
Wah I don't wanna wait another two weeks!
They have to rub it in my face by advertising during every premier league game as well. I did enjoy the quote they put up on the ad boards though. "FIFA 10... The beautiful game" - The Sun
Most generic quote ever! I like to imagine the original quote as "FIFA 10 takes a big shit on the beautiful game"
breaklaw @ Oct 5th 2009 10:25AM
So is FIFA officially better than Pro Evo now? Not sales-wise quality-wise.
Jack @ Oct 5th 2009 10:38AM
Yes it's the better game by far quality wise and it shows even more than it did 5 years ago in terms of sales vs the competitor they know have an extra 33% market share in Europe than they did only 3 years ago.
Nigeria: Charmy Bee DF @ Oct 5th 2009 10:42AM
I'd say the PS2/Wii versions of Pro Evo stil trump HD Fifa. But if we were to compare the 360 versions of Fifa 10 and the latest Pro Evo, then Fifa wins by a country mile.
But EA still have a long way to go to match Pro Evolution Four - the one with Henry and Totti on the front cover.
Eh @ Oct 5th 2009 11:57AM
Its been undeniably better since FIFA 08 and arguably better since FIFA 07. Where have you been? Its always been then best game on todays consoles.
They havent made a PES with a built from scratch engine made for current consoles, they are still dragging along with most of the PS2 engine. Its painful watching the videos for PES 2010, the gameplay is identical to the old PS2 games with almost no physics anywhere.
Konami needs to take a 2 year break and focus on making a new game engine, they are killing the series with this PS2 crap.
Kyle @ Oct 5th 2009 2:32PM
My boss has played both (Pro Evo at a managers conference) and he said that "Fifa pisses all over Pro Evo this year", and he's usually a Pro Evo fan.
kal3003 @ Oct 5th 2009 10:59AM
baaaaaaaaa
DinnyHoon @ Oct 5th 2009 12:28PM
I'd imagine this is due to how surprisingly good last year's FIFA was compared to Pro Evo 2009.
