NintendoWare Weekly: Thorium Wars and a Word about Final Fantasy
It's a light load this week for Nintendo aficionados. With only a trio of new downloads available, this week's offerings pale in comparison to the robust lineup of last week, but, alas, we must soldier on. Despite a lack of quantity this week, quality is here, as Nintendo and Square Enix have finally made good on their promise to bring Final Fantasy to the Virtual Console.
See the full release details after the break.
DSiWare
- Thorium Wars (Big John Games, 1 player, 1,000 DSi Points): In Thorium Wars, the world is being attacked by the Thorians, a "super species of Thorium-based machines." Players must use an arsenal of tanks, skyfighters, yogurt, hovercrafts, marsupials, gunboats, starfighters and kitchen sinks.
- Word Searcher (Digital Leisure Inc., 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Featuring over 100 themed word-search puzzles, there really isn't much else to say about the game. There are words and you search for them.
- Final Fantasy (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points):The game that spawned one of the most popular series of all time finally hits the Virtual Console. What? You thought the game was only the basis for a pretty funny comic?

I could just shout "SEGA!"...

I don't see many people parting with their Wii Points that much until the SNES FF titles start to roll out.
But, maybe I underestimate people willingness to try non-remade 8-bit Final Fantasies.
Dreganfyre @ Oct 5th 2009 11:48AM
Yeah, same I suppose... If I had never beaten FFI, then I might have downloaded it, but I don't have much interest in playing through it again... I'm quite excited about the SNES Final Fantasies on the other hand.
Still pretty cool that they put it out though :)

The original FF1 hasn't aged well. It was great in its day, but looking back, there are a ton of things it does wrong. That said, the remake for PS1/GBA was awesome and fixed a lot of the problems I had with it. If Nintendo sold that for VC for 500 points, it would be an awesome bargain. The original FF1 at 500 points? I guess if you're a hardcore fan of the series, maybe it's worth checking out, but if you're that hardcore, you've probably already played it in an emulator.

yeah, despite the game being groundbreaking, it's not a title that has aged that well..

Welcome back, Halo Pony.
Dreganfyre @ Oct 5th 2009 11:53AM
Hey wait a second... Has anyone downloaded it yet? If so... does the game still only have a single save slot? :\
Roto13 @ Oct 5th 2009 6:03PM
You apparently don't get how Virtual Console games work.
Preston @ Oct 5th 2009 12:04PM
Looks like I have something to use my Wii-channel browser refund on once Nintendo makes good on that.
Alex @ Oct 5th 2009 12:06PM
So I guess Castlevania Advevture Rebirth being released in Q3 09 ended up being a lie then, huh? Figures, now that I actually have a few extra bucks of course it's not gonna be out.

Well, well, it's about freakin' time Nintendo/Square Enix release a game that is somewhat worth downloading! Not that I will (since I have the PSX version), so I'll just wait until they miraculously decide to release Final Fantasy VI (sorry, "III US") next Monday. And until they address the 4.2 update bug, I'm not updating through Nintendo; I may update the shopping channel through other means, since I hacked my wii (for the very reason I stated before, until they decide to release more SNES RPGs worth downloading). But, something tells me I'm being a fool for ever getting my hopes up when it comes to VC games, based on the pattern Nintendo's been doing on the VC. First, they release a really good game, like Mario RPG, and the people then assume that Nintendo will keep on releasing these games for the next month or so in a row. Boy, was I wrong! The week after, they release some never-before-heard game for the Megadrive at hyper-inflated prices.

I'm not sure, but I think I just got dumber after reading that.
TwEE @ Oct 5th 2009 2:14PM
Blame Square Enix for the lack of Square Enix releases.
Hel @ Oct 5th 2009 2:32PM
Dude, if you can already run homebrew, the NES and SNES emulators run flawlessly on the Wii. Just sayin'
Cheezeman3000 @ Oct 5th 2009 12:36PM
YES! Final Fantasy! Time to shift my SD card channels around to accommodate for six new consecutive additions...
Roto13 @ Oct 5th 2009 6:04PM
The ones that weren't released in North America originally aren't coming to the North American Virtual Console. And I heard somewhere that FFVI wasn't coming to the North American VC, but that might not be true.
Cheezeman3000 @ Oct 5th 2009 6:50PM
Damn, are you sure about that? They've released international games before but I guess in terms of Final Fantasy it would take a while to translate. Still, they could take a translation they used in one of their re-releases and apply it to the original version. That would save a lot of time and would take minimal effort for the gobs of money they'd make in return.
I guess I just hope you're wrong. :)
Roto13 @ Oct 5th 2009 6:05PM
I'm kinda surprised FF1 doesn't have the Square-Enix tax.
MythosEngineer @ Oct 5th 2009 7:46PM
Very sad that this is coming for the Wii. I guess I'll have to buy another Wii now :( Gave my first one to my nephew who decided to throw it out a window.
hobocop @ Oct 5th 2009 11:18PM
My god, how many platforms has FF1 appeared on now?
