the hundreds of companies out of business now are saying Hi along with the millions of people that have lost work... Detroit, MI says a big Hi.

recessions dont hit every market, im sure blackwater, haliburton, and other such defense companies from the US are doing just fine if not better now...
;)

but yeah we need to go out and make games !!!

It's not that insanely high. It just seems that way. We used to blow ten million in a weekend for the Genesis.

I remember my jaw dropping when I saw the ad costs for the 92 MTV awards...

Yea I know millions of people are without work and banks are still failing. I just didn't think Valve had money like that, I mean I wonder how much of that money comes from EA & MS. I mean I can see how Activision can spend the millions upon millions to MW2, but thats cause they have a ASSton of money.

valve is 1 of the more successful game companies around.
why wouldnt they have the money?

they develop and up until now, pretty much published their games themselves.
since counterstrike and half-life 1 there games have been nothing but very popular with millions of people.
i guess its cause we dont see NDP or other stat figures with all the steam and PC sales.
most of their sales are from those 2 sources and we never know how many hundreds of millions they rake in each year, without looking at their shareholder reports, if they are a public company.

what valve game has flopped ? L4D is probably the closest and still sold 1 million copies i think.

and the best business advice anyone could say in a recession or anytime is YOU HAVE TO SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY....
the more they spend getting the word out, the more copies they will sell, especially since activision may be spending much more on MW2 ads.

Of course valve has money. They're a private company that isn't affected by the stock market, and all of their games have sold very well. They're a relatively small company, and they also make a lot of money off of Steam. Every game you buy on steam, valve gets some cash for, and every weekend they have some crazy sale that pushes sales through the roof. Cheap entertianment is one of the most recession-proof businesses out there, why wouldn't valve have money?

Seems to me that pushing the game up a few weeks to get it out before MW2 would probably do more for sales than any amount of money spent on ads.

The best deal out there is the 4 Pack pre-order from steam which comes out at $33.75 each copy. Just chip in with 3 other friends and get it!! instead of paying $50.

you know what I just realized L4D2 needs? Proper lan support. Nothings worse than playing in the same room as 4 friends, but still having lag because you're all connected to a bad server, or worse, you lose the connection to it!. Even TF2 has proper lan support, and it's a lot harder to get 32 people together in a room to play TF2 than it is to invite 3 friends over to play L4D

well they've already got MY preorder. I'm looking forward to it.

Although I do think that the "exclusive baseball bat" is a bit cheap, especially since they advertised the baseball bat right from the start. Maybe it's just a skin?

I'm hard pressed to buy it. I'm not buying it on PC (No friends on PC, my PC might not even be able to run it) and valve always fucks over 360 owners. 7 bucks for a map PC gamers got free? Really?

Valve didn't fuck over 360 owners. They did this to themselves. Going way back to the Halo 2 map packes, even when people knew DLC was going to be free later, they showed they were very willing to pay $10 now. More and more games have had paid DLC, and while we all complain about it, we end up buying it anyways. Whether it be Gears of War maps or Call of Duty maps a LOT of people buy them when they could just play the game as it already is.

However, the PC crowd has been getting goodies like this for years, and would consider paid DLC an insult, and most of them wouldn't buy it.

If 360 owners would stop buying DLC, then companies would stop charging for it. But it's probably too late now, if we all stopped buying they'd just stop making it.

Valve was nice enough to fight with MS to allow the last DLC pack for free to 360 owners, and Crash course was relatively cheap compared to COD4 and Halo map packs. Meanwhile Activision has already announced DLC for MW2, and the damn game isn't out yet. (And you can bet the PC version will be getting those maps for free too)

What if they took that 25mil and subsidize sales, that would be a nice trend.

Last time valves ad has ever sold me was uhhhh never. Seeing as I'm on PC and just check the Valve store every weekended I don't need any ads to know about the games.

Didn't Valve already say that Left 4 Dead had become a household name, kind of guaranteeing sales?
BTW, I wanna get the original L4D on PC, but I'm unsure of my computers' strengths (I tried the Portal demo and it lagged). I'm using an un-modded, out-of-the-box Windows Vista and would also like to know if Left 4 Dead 2 will have the same requirements as the original.

I wonder what kind of cool swag and/or trips to Valve I could get if I boycotted L4D2 and L4D because Valve has failed to deliver the promised HL2:Ep3?
