Dreamcast controller turned into decoration for iPhone dock

Deciding that the Dreamcast controller had too many input methods and not enough screens, Flickr user jayhauf removed the D-pad from the device and made the whole thing into an ornamental iPhone dock.

We're pretty sure you can try this one at home, if you've got a (preferably broken) Dreamcast controller: just pull out the D-pad and the cord, and thread your iPhone connector through. Just like that, you've got a telephone sticking out of the left side of your controller! It's certain to be a conversation piece, inspiring questions from your friends like "Why did you do that?" and "How are we going to play Power Stone now?"

I don't get it. That's not even a good/clever/practical mod. I feel like there are much more interesting things to be done with a Dreamcast controller, like (as the article mentioned) playing Power Stone.

I saw this on Engadget yesterday and thought it was crap.
Now it's today and Joystiq, and I'll let you guess what I think.

Ummm.... why not just use the VMU hole that already exists?

That is the most boring controller mod ever...

What a waste of a Dreamcast controller. It would've been better if they modded it to take the Iphone in the VMU slot and made an app for the Iphone to act as VMU.

Add another Joystiq on the right hand side, change it to USB and make it compatible with Xbox360/PS3/Wii then this guy could have sold me on a modded controller...

Just more proof iphone owners have no real value of technology, just image.

The Dreamcast controller -is- a horrible hand destroying piece of crap. That said, the Dreamcast overall is a great console and the iphone doesn't deserve to stand in its shadow, let alone sit in some kind of terribly made dock fashioned out of its controller.

The Dreamcast was great, but SNES was the best console of all time.

Well, the SNES certainly had some of the best games of all time. However, the console itself was made special only because of it's games. Otherwise it's improvements over the NES were not that special. More buttons and better graphics.

The dreamcast, as a console, was really special because it pioneered online gaming, browsers and mouse/keyboard on the console. It was amazing because of how ahead of its time it was. It's also impressive that even though it eventually got crushed by the PS2, it still managed to pump out some really fantastic games in it's short time. No, they might not be as memorable as some of those SNES classics, but the Dreamcast was still one of the most impressive consoles launched.

I'll stick to my normal iPod dock, thanks. Our Dreamcast controllers are pristine and we do not plan to put that in jeopardy anytime soon.

Besides, that looks a bit... odd.

Besides, this one is a bit more appealing to me because it doesn't waste a poor controller.

The VMU comes home from a long, hard exhaustive day's work. The boss was being an asshole, but he made it through the day. He calls out to his wife, the Dreamcast controller, "Honey, I'm home!". He hears muffled sounds, and he knows something is wrong. He runs up the stairs, turns the corner and busts through the door, ready to apprehend her attackers. Instead, he sees another man, the iPhone in bed with his wife.

Silence.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!" VMU says in a loud, steady tone. The Dreamcast controller is trembling, "Honey, I'm sorry, I didn't think you'd come home so soon!". "I said," the VMU is trembling in anger, "what the fuck is he doing here." The iPhone stutters out, "Come on now, VMU, let's calm down. Let's not do anything we would regret later." The VMU looks up at the iPhone, briskly pulls the police-certified pistol and takes a single shot. iPhone, taken by surprise, clenches at his broken screen, looks deep into the Dreamcast controller's eyes and utters his last words, "I love you...".

That's what I imagine when I see that picture. What about you?

Reading this made me think that it would be cool if he wrote a VMU app and found a way to hook it up to the controller in place of one.
