Forgotten Disney characters are Epic Mickey antagonists
We can't seem to stop waffling on Epic Mickey. At the start, Warren Spector's involvement was enough to pique our interest. But we couldn't help but be a bit disappointed to see that Wii exclusivity might keep the game from being the graphical masterpiece we'd hoped for. But now, after reading a few details about the game scooped up by Eurogamer, we're right back on board.
The game reportedly revolves around forgotten Disney characters who, after years of being ignored, have grown bitter. None more so than Walt's first cartoon creation, Oswald the Rabbit. He's the one who spread all of the evil black goo around that you see above. Mickey will apparently have to use paint, thinner and erasers to draw his way through the world, which makes the Wii exclusivity a lot easier to understand.
Okay, so the black goo all over the world isn't the most original, but disgruntled Disney characters trying to wipe out Mickey? How cool does that sound?
(P.S. Captain EO as a villain. We demand it.)

So...this is like Mario Sunshine but with Mickey?
Sly (Now in Critter Form!) @ Oct 6th 2009 6:39PM
sounds like a sunshine/okami mix to me.
WREturns (Looking for a graphic designer) @ Oct 6th 2009 6:43PM
You're right, Sly. Good call.
WINterfang @ Oct 6th 2009 6:45PM
Sounds like awesome/awesome mix to me.
Jrinswand @ Oct 6th 2009 7:00PM
[Whoa! Banned!]
LegendaryRedass @ Oct 6th 2009 7:06PM
Not cool Jrinswand
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Oct 6th 2009 7:16PM
Yeah, sounds like Okami meets Mario Sunshine with the stupidest imaginable title ever.
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Oct 6th 2009 7:17PM
You know what? That's not fair, it could have been worse. It could have been called, "WTFLOL Mickey."
Mr Mobius - the wandering artist @ Oct 6th 2009 7:18PM
If it worked out to combine those two games, then GOTY contender.
For me to like a game, combining Mario Sunshine (while not the best Mario, still amazingly great) with Okami is a pretty good combination.
Two Okami's duct-taped together though and you'd have a first day buy.

I was waiting for Jrinswand to mess up and say something out of line.
Good thing he didn't disappoint.
Macroy @ Oct 6th 2009 8:08PM
I know it was out of line, but that character was part of a segment in Song of the South:

I am amused that I got voted down. I am saying nothing about the quality of the title; "Epic Mickey" is an objectively stupid name.
paeaston @ Oct 6th 2009 9:55PM
sounds like it needs Darkwing Duck in the mix. he gets dangerous
jahd5000 @ Oct 6th 2009 10:44PM
yeah... but i dont get why no consideration on ps3 version! you know, with the whole accurate enough to PAINT or WRITE thing, i would def get a not so graphically great game with this theme and controls.
Johnny Neat @ Oct 7th 2009 8:13AM
@Sly, you're too right but then again an evil Captain EO would sell me. My son's gamer tag is all about EO so bring that character back people. He was sci-fi weird considering it's Mike Jackson.
Giroro @ Oct 7th 2009 11:59AM
I'll be disappointed if this is anything like SMS, I hated that game.
Silencio @ Oct 7th 2009 3:31PM
@ fullmetal
I think you're confusing objective and subjective. Personally I like the title. It's simple, understated and yet... epic.
Gibbeynator @ Oct 6th 2009 6:37PM
Sounds like they're trying to recapture the success of Kingdom Hearts.
aristokrat @ Oct 6th 2009 6:56PM
By photocopying it, no less.
Discotheque @ Oct 6th 2009 7:02PM
Photocopying? Sorry I don't think there'll be any horribly dull spiky haired kids in here mate. The only problem I had with Kingdom Hearts....was everything Square threw into it. Nomura's one of the worst designers out there.
F @ Oct 6th 2009 7:18PM
BELTS
Mr Khan @ Oct 6th 2009 7:25PM
It seems to me that Square's getting it into their head that people buy KH games for the FF characters, and not as much the Disney characters.
Not sure if there's background for that. But in the now-legendary "what platform will KH3 go to?" flame wars on VGChartz, i was told a number of times that FF characters are what sell those games...
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 6th 2009 7:26PM
I love Kingdom Hearts, but you're an idiot. This is nothing like Kingdom Hearts from what I have seen.
aristokrat @ Oct 6th 2009 7:51PM
While my comment was mostly a joke, to say there is nothing like Kingdom Hearts here is pretty short-sighted. Hero goes out to save the world from black things that have taken over and meets up with various Disney characters along the way, but this time the Hero is also a (the) Disney character himself and perhaps a greater proportion of the Disney characters are enemies. Though, in all fairness, if I was going to design a game for Mickey, it'd probably be along those lines too as Disney won't have him doing anything too risque, etc.
It seems like the major potential for product differentiation will be the gameplay, as the novelty of back-catalog characters can only carry it so far.
Jason Statham (Has a ps3 now) @ Oct 6th 2009 7:58PM
"Hero goes out to save the world from black things that have taken over and meets up with various Disney characters along the way,"
You know you just described past Disney games in the past and also other video games as well right?

@F:
AND ZIPPERS.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 6th 2009 8:40PM
Well, I think Goofy fighting Sephiroth was glorious, that's why I like to keep a balance of Disney and FF. Of course, I would prefer more crazy awesome Cloud and Squall moments like the ones we got in KH2, but I'll take what I can get.

[ArchiGamer] [Featuring GRATIOUS ALIEN NUDITY] @ Oct 6th 2009 6:38PM
This is what a game featuring Mickey should be. Seriously.
ChuckBartowski @ Oct 6th 2009 7:05PM
You forgot kingdom hearts already? Micky was like, the shit in those games...
[ArchiGamer] [Featuring GRATIOUS ALIEN NUDITY] @ Oct 6th 2009 7:08PM
Waiting for KH3 can do that to a man...
S. Tiger @ Oct 6th 2009 7:40PM
I was under the impression that Kingdom Hearts featured poorly created characters.
RobinEivets (Soon to be Crimsic) @ Oct 6th 2009 6:39PM
Okay, first of all why is it that because it's on the Wii, it can't look nice? Super Mario Galaxy, Okami, and LoZ: TP all were artistic masterpieces.
And anyways...this game might be a buy for me...I'm going to go poor with all these great games coming out...well...poorer...
13 days till Borderlands! :D
sohcahtoa @ Oct 6th 2009 6:40PM
Cant you just say Twilight Princess, instead of me having to scratch my head for a good minute to figure out what was LoZ: TP.... maybe is just me
Sly (Now in Critter Form!) @ Oct 6th 2009 6:42PM
it can look nice on the wii, but the point is that it can look much nicer on PS360.
clanboru15 @ Oct 6th 2009 6:59PM
zelda a masterpiece? What?
[ArchiGamer] [Featuring GRATIOUS ALIEN NUDITY] @ Oct 6th 2009 7:12PM
If you don't consider any of the Zelda games masterpieces in there own right, then you aren't a real gamer.
Sly (Now in Critter Form!) @ Oct 6th 2009 7:18PM
should i mention the CD-i? nah.
oh, wait. dammit.
[ArchiGamer] [Featuring GRATIOUS ALIEN NUDITY] @ Oct 6th 2009 7:23PM
I consider the CD-i games as masterpieces....of poor development trash.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington] @ Oct 6th 2009 7:26PM
I own those motherfucking abortions.
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 6th 2009 7:31PM
I consider CD-i games masterpieces of the most memes made out of games.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 6th 2009 8:31PM
I maintain that Twilight Princess rocks X-core.
Also, Midna was full of win. I like a girl with a tragically broken personality below the already awesome surface. (Spice and Wolf, anyone?)
KaBob799 @ Oct 6th 2009 9:00PM
And both Okami and Twilight Princess were basically last gen games. Just think of what they could of been like developed just for the Wii.
Mr. Fister @ Oct 6th 2009 9:11PM
"I maintain that Twilight Princess rocks X-core.

Another member of the "We Like Midna" internet-club? Awesome.
"And both Okami and Twilight Princess were basically last gen games. Just think of what they could of been like developed just for the Wii."
In terms of Okami, you'd probably get Epic Mickey, and in terms of Twilight Princess, you'd get...well, the upcoming Wii Zelda. I'm expecting great things from both titles.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 6th 2009 9:29PM
I like plenty of things! It just so happens that Midna is one of them. Happy characters are boring.
IGLAW @ Oct 7th 2009 3:50AM
Twilight Princess was far from an artistic masterpiece. In fact I'd say it featured one of the dullest worlds yet seen in any 3D Zelda.
And that Twilight effect can be achieved by dragging around two sliders for about twenty seconds in Photoshop.
