Nintendo sells 2.2 million DSis, says Walmart is biggest customer
During a recent interview with CNBC, Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime addressed the Wii's recent price drop (surprise: it's seen positive results) and the company's strategy for the upcoming holiday season. The manufacturer is counting on a strong showing for its DSi handheld, with Reggie revealing that 2.2 million units have now been sold, presumably in North America alone.
Of course, Nintendo couldn't have possibly sold that many handhelds without the help of retailers and according to Reggie, Walmart has been the biggest customer. We're not surprised -- Walmart is supernatural, after all.

Ah, now I see why it's selling so much when walmart's the biggest seller.
I mean, so many stupid people go there they have their own site

Every time i see you comment like this i just think of you yelling at ur computer monitor as you type some of the most random dumb shit ever.
I don't really see how you figure dumb ppl buy stuff from walmart but not from best buy. Everyone knows you can get stuff cheaper online. like i get xbox live from Newegg for 40 bucks no tax and no shipping.
Ballistic H @ Oct 6th 2009 1:44PM
Gotta agree with tmacairjordan87. Been to a couple of Walmart a couple of times and buyers as well as employees there just don't have any etiquette at all. Totally Redneck attitude.
Ballistic H @ Oct 6th 2009 1:50PM
Btw, the Walmarts I've been are so far because I live in the city and there's none. I had to go to the suburbs to find them.
Giroro @ Oct 6th 2009 4:17PM
My local Walmart is filled with Mexicans. Straight up and simple to the point damn near everything is written in Spainish.
Oh well, I'm sure Walmart doesn't care that I don't shop there any more.
Greg K @ Oct 6th 2009 12:29PM
Paying for value? You can't play DVD's on a Wii!
vidGuy @ Oct 6th 2009 12:41PM
Who would want that?
GewurztraminerX @ Oct 6th 2009 12:43PM
My toaster doesn't play DVDs either but luckily I already have 6 other devices that do

although I hear that Twilight hack no longer works.....
Greg K @ Oct 6th 2009 12:48PM
Yeah, but it's about integration. Just because you personally have more than one gaming console/ device that plays DVD's doesn't mean others do, if having DVD playback means that someone can get rid of the clutter a DVD player takes up then all the better!
Not everyone wants to hack their Wii to gain functionality and neither do they wish to download films they already have, if that's what you want, fair enough. Just doesn't seem like a good value proposition to me!
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 6th 2009 1:10PM
if you are buying a Wii and it would be you ONLY DVD player WTF is your life about??
Greg K @ Oct 6th 2009 1:18PM
No, you WANT it to be your only DVD player rather than having two devices. I'm not saying I personally am the use case, but other people I know are in situations where they are.
sonicspike41 @ Oct 6th 2009 1:24PM
Considering the Wii has a very "expanded" audience this generation, I think it's very possible that a few Wii owners might not own a computer/Xbox 306/PS3/other DVD capable device. Such people might want to sell their DVD player and only keep the Wii.
The Wii can play DVDs, and all it takes is a small software program to do so. I don't know why Nintendo doesn't just include it into the next software update and use it as a selling point this holiday season.
Harrie @ Oct 6th 2009 2:14PM
I heard they didn't include a DVD player because it would make the lense die faster
Mogster @ Oct 6th 2009 3:11PM
Greg's right guys. There really is no excuse for the lack of DVD player. It just shows Nintendo is still as stubborn as it always has been (e.g no DVD player in the GC).
It doesn't matter how many DVD players you pretend you have, people expect consoles to come with a DVD player. Only makes sense seeming the thing runs freakin' DVD disks anyways.
Many 'casuals' I know have stick DVDs in the Wii expecting it to play them, only to be disappointed when it doesn't.
agsgedert54 @ Oct 6th 2009 3:37PM
i don't know why all of you guys don't get it.
in order for nintendo to add dvd playback functionality, they have to pay a licensing fee. there is zero benefit to nintendo adding dvd playback because:
1. everyone who wants a dvd player has one
2. nintendo will make no money selling dvds and sales of the wii would not see a significant hardware sales increase by including the feature.
before sony, no one included movie playback capability in consoles, because only sony pictures stands to benefit from increased dvd and blu-ray sales.
Greg K @ Oct 6th 2009 3:39PM
That doesn't change the fact that it's not that great a value proposition as Reggie was emphasising
Giroro @ Oct 6th 2009 4:21PM
Yo u know, the Xbox 360 does a lot more than a Wii, including play DVDs. They are also the same price. . . IDK when I think 'value' I think PS2 (which also plays DVDs).
Where's my money back REGGIE!!?!
Anonymous @ Oct 6th 2009 6:23PM
Yeah Nintendo is totally screwing us off. How dare they not have features like the ability to play DVDs while the 360 and PS3 can play DVDs AND have perfect backwards compatibility with last generations consoles, while Wii does only the latter.
OH WAIT.

Wow what an uneducated uninformed douchebag statement. So in essence you are saying that my parents & all of my family are idiots as well?
Just in case you haven't crawled out of your cave lately, not all Walmarts are exclusively white trash or ghetto. Personally I shop where I find the best deals. Whether that be Walmart, Target, etc.
I love how people make their stereotypes based off of their own little "cave" in the world.
"OH NOES!!! TEH WALMART PAYS CRAP WAGES & SELLS STUFF MADE IN CHINA & HIRES ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!!!"
News Flash: In essence Walmart is a company & is there to make money just like any other company!
If you don't like Walmart then FINE! Just STFU about it being so evil! Not just you but everyone else in general.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 6th 2009 12:42PM
Only idiots you say??
SURE, they may have caused countless mom and pop shops to go under....but at this point there isn't shit we can do about it.....I tried boycotting Wal-mart for a few months but then Christmas came around and their toys were WAAAAAY cheaper than Toys R Us.....my kids had to have something. Then on top of that Sam's Club has cheap diapers & Detergent....and those are thing you need when you have an infant...
BlaqueBeird @ Oct 6th 2009 12:42PM
Not to sound like an advocate of corporate monopoly, but really, you'd have to be an idiot not to shop at Walmart. Their marked up prices are lower than what most other retailers buy a product for. Food for thought: Walmart was the first company to buy in such large bulk that they can afford to charge less for a product than say a private retailer that sells the same product. They're not the power hungry maniacs the media and hippies would have you believe, it's just good business.
And as far as the DSi comment goes, I have but one thing to say: I fucked your dad.
Fernando Rocker @ Oct 6th 2009 12:57PM
Sorry, but I'm a pro-Walmart guy too...
I don't know how Walmarts look in your cities, but at least here in Laredo, Tx, we have 2 regular Walmarts and 1 Walmart Supercenters...
The Supercenter is relative new, and the 2 regular Walmarts were remodeled a few years ago... the stores are great, very clean and modern, with excellent prices and a huge selection of games and movies.
Why the Walmart hate? The things you buy in there are the same brand as the things you would buy at Target for example, but for less money.
And Chris... I was yesterday with my brother at Sam's Club... he has a 6 months baby and he was buying some diapers... very cheap!
Mr Khan @ Oct 6th 2009 1:24PM
save it. mietha lurks more than he posts, very fortunately for us, but when he does emerge, it's usually to troll Nintendo.
Ballistic H @ Oct 6th 2009 1:53PM
I think it's only in the US that Walmarts have the lowest prices. The Walmarts in Canada doesn't have the lowest prices but they're a convenience to suburbans.
Giroro @ Oct 6th 2009 4:29PM
The Walmart business model really has 2 stages
1- Undercut all local businesses with great prices and selection in order to drive away competition
2- Raise prices to be above what you would have been paying at other stores and cut inventory and variety to increase efficiency.
Most Walmart defenders have a local Walmart in stage 1, most Walmart haters live near one in stage 2.
