We were just as perplexed as anyone when Guitar Hero 5 trounced The Beatles: Rock Band in the UK -- where we hear the Fab Four is fairly popular still. Thankfully, Activision's Guitar Hero business CEO, Rock 'n' Roll Dan Rosensweig, is there to explain it all. "The number one thing about Guitar Hero is that it's fun as hell -- it's focused on the guitar, and the variety and value proposition -- and the reviews are spectacular. So I guess we're the only ones not surprised."
Rosensweig went on to tell GamesIndustry.biz that "internally we always talked about the Fab Five - Guitar Hero 5 - was going to beat the Fab Four." So, we've also discovered Activision's real secret weapon that keeps it ahead of the competition: Hilarious wordplay.

well... i bought both and to be honest, i did end up playing gh5 more than the beatles:rb.
if anything, i felt gh5 was loads better than gh:wt.
gh3 though is still my favorite gh game.
can't wait for lego rock band.

Let 'em gloat. They may be dominating in the UK but on the world stage, RB has finally surpassed GH, and it's about time.

Did they just openly admit that bass/drums/vocals will forever fall by the wayside in Guitar Hero, since it's "focused on the guitar"?
Posted: Oct 7th 2009 10:58PM mbarriault said
Precisely why they should've stuck with guitars. But they added the drums/bass/vocals to compete with Rock Band, to suck in consumers with promises of other instruments, but choosing to play those instruments, unlike Rock Band, is an intentionally lackluster experience.

Yep, Guitar Hero 5 is fun as hell...which is why Activision made sure that Guitar Hero: Van Halen is built using the now quite-outdated GH:M engine.

This is how i see it. GH5 outsold RB: Beatles cause it was 2 for 1. The Van Halen Offer expired at the end of the first month how convenient for them..... It also had 8 extra days over it.

Sounds about right.
The Beatles: RB would have been a cool art movie or something, but since we're talking about video games here, GH5 is a far superior game, and that's just the facts of the matter.

I wonder what the difference between the UK and US versions of these games is. For me, TB:BR is the one that is fun as hell...

A compilation game is always gonna sell more as there are songs for everyone. Believe it or not (!) there are more people that don't love The Beatles than people that do.

Who cares?
I bought RB: Beatles because I enjoy their music more than what's contained on GH5.
Each to their own.
I dont care who came out on top in sales. I have the Beatles, I am happy. End of.
Whats the problem? :D

Yay! Another thread where we all pretend that Rock Band is a zillion times better than Guitar Hero, its nearly identical competitor, because Activision is the devil and Harmonix poops kittens!
I love these. All nine times a week that one comes up.
Fight on.

I can't fathom myself purchasing a GH product as long as Harmonix is not making them.

you people give activision too much attention..
Rockband is a better product, but the GH brand came first and has a lot more mind share,
the bulk of casual consumers that buy these music games don't see much of a difference between them though.

All of you are douches for bashing someone for having an opinion.
I have my views and I go see a lot of live shows. I'm just saying that I would like to see people devote as much time to actually learning music as opposed to learning a button combo that emulates playing a real instrument. I love my guitars and I wish more people would put time into learning music.
@John
Ur a moron. I play guitar fairly well for someone who hasn't been doing it very long. You keep on playing your PoS plastic thing. I'll stick to my Dean Razorback.
rip Dimebag

If the product was doing so well would Activision be laying off employees? Also, they are tied for world wide sales numbers. The fact is they have a piss poor selection of DLC that they have to rebuild. They can rattle off about how proud they are about unit sales but if I remember correctly RB earned multiple millions of dollars in DLC profits something that GH's brand can't say. That's sustained earnings as opposed to one time rushes of money and that's a sustainable business model because sooner or later people are going to stop buying new pieces of plastic but if you can keep using the old plastic with new content that's more palatable.

As someone before me said, I got both and found GH5 to be a lot more fun. Not because of the songs - I actually only know about 5 songs of the entire GH5 tracklist, while I've at least heard 3/4s of The Beatles one - but because of the gameplay itself. I usually just play on medium since I wanna have fun, not stress myself out, and GH5's .... whatchamacallem? note...things? are way more fun to play. The Beatles' ones are too easy on normal, and too difficult on hard... there's no in-between, so I ended having more fun with GH. But that's just my opinion, don't go and take it as fact.
Oh, BTW. What the heck happened with Beatles DLC? I thought we'd get a new song a week or something... there are a LOT of cool Beatles songs missing.

well, i think the reason GH5 outselled TB:RB is that all the people that i know are going to buy it for christmas, hell, even my uncle who thinks videogames are bad for the young has bought an xbox360 already but will wait for christmas to buy TB:RBXD

One major reason why Guitar Hero will have sold comparatively better in the UK than in the US is that Rock Band 2 has never been fully released in the UK. That is, the only instrument bundle available for Rock Band games in the the UK remains Rock Band 1 (RB2 is available disc-only.)
The result is twofold:
1. Guitar Hero's band versions are the only full-band games that have launched recently (even if there have been, like, 4 of them…) It has stronger brand awareness.
2. With no major Rock Band release, there's less generic (that is, multi-band) rhythm-game saturation.
In the US, we've had Rock Band 2 for ages. Our peripherals still work and the plentiful downloadable content is still compatible with our game. Yes, some of us hold a vigilant dislike for the attitude and execution of the Guitar Hero franchise as well, but aside that, Guitar Hero 5 with wireless instruments is a bundle that the US market just doesn't _need_. In Europe, new wireless instruments is an appealing upgrade that's not been satisfied by RB2.
Guitar Hero 5 is probably fine. It could be terrible, but in the the UK, it's the only game, so it's the ‘funnest’ by default. The Beatles being band-specific is always going to have smaller appeal than the entire guitar rhythm-game market.

Oh lawd. It won because Guitar Hero is more recognizable of a name than Rock Band, and beatles fans generally aren't hardcore gamers, and the game will probably sell best over time.

Of course, the irony here is that TB:RB still sold better than GH5 in America... So unless GH5 outsold TB:RB 3 or 4 to 1 in the UK, it didn't beat Rock Band 2-to-1 internationally. :P
