Dragon Quest VI: Screens of Reverie

At Tokyo Game Show 2009, Square Enix showed off the last in its trilogy of announced DS Dragon Quest remakes, Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie, and now Famitsu has some new screens of the RPG. Unsurprisingly, it looks, graphically, just like the other two DS Dragon Quest remakes, also developed by Artepiazza.

So why is it exciting? Well, for one thing, Dragon Quest games tend to be good. But most importantly, like Dragon Quest V, the Super Famicom version of Realms of Reverie never left Japan, and this DS version has already been announced for localization. North America will then finally have the whole numbered Dragon Quest series. Well, except for IX, but we can also be pretty sure that's coming.

I really need to get around to buying one of these DQ remakes.

IV is pretty good (much better than the FFIII remake, imo), though I'm not really all that far. I really need to get back to it and move on to V!

What took them so long on VI?

My guess is that it's because DQ6 has never been remade before.

DQ4 had been remade for the PlayStation by Heart Beat and Artepiazza, and all Artepiazza really did was port it to the DS and add a few small things here and there.

Artepiazza themselves had already done a remake of DQ5 for the PlayStation 2 with Matrix Software, so they already knew what to do with it, just rebuild it using the same engine as DQ4 DS.

Until its DS version comes out, DQ6 only exists as the 1996 Super Famicom version that Heart Beat developed. Artepiazza pretty much had to start from square one, since they weren't involved with DQ6's original development.
