EA: FIFA 10 is fastest-selling sports game 'ever'
EA's annual footie franchise must be doing something right this year because FIFA 10 has apparently sold 1.7 million copies in Europe during its first week. According to EA, the title is "the fastest selling sports game ever and EA's biggest European launch in history."
Even with the positive launch, GI.biz spoke with an analyst who believes the sales aren't going to help EA in the long-term. Doug Creutz of Cowan and Company notes that heavy discounts at supermarket chains and other incentives made initial sales strong, but if the situation plays out anything like FIFA 09, the year-on-year sales will only grow marginally. But like a head-butt goal in the first minutes of a match, FIFA 10 is putting on a good show during launch.

"headbutt goal"? as opposed to headed goal? i quite like it
Jack @ Oct 7th 2009 9:52AM
It's only been out 4 days so I guess it will pass the 2 million mark after 7 days. Not bad, not bad but I'd like to see the world wide sales after Xmas. Too bad they don't report sales then...
IcelandTerrorist (stormtrooper190) @ Oct 7th 2009 9:53AM
madden also sells poorly in europe.
brain @ Oct 7th 2009 10:02AM
That could be more related to the Madden team being unimaginative and shit more than Europeans not being that familiar with american football
cafecito @ Oct 7th 2009 5:31PM
^^ -- I'd go with the second.
Neraz @ Oct 7th 2009 10:00AM
It suxs that is is still not released in US even though its made in Canada... Anyways it gonna be a $60 update from fifa 09. So my hope are very low on this game actually all the EA franchise are like that.

butaneko @ Oct 7th 2009 10:27AM
The gameplay felt pretty fresh in the demo. Plus I'm excited about all the common sense manager mode upgrades they have made.
Worth $60? Probably not. But since I'll probably put 200 hours into this game in the next 12 months it's worth it for me.
greg19735 @ Oct 7th 2009 10:11AM
well ill tell them they can atleast add a +1 to the sales on the 20th because i'll be going to get it.
i never did understand the heavy discounts at launch in supermarkets and stuff. you think they'd wait until at least after christmas to do that.
Cal @ Oct 7th 2009 12:54PM
It's a loss leader to get people into the store and hopefully buying other stuff there, maybe even sway some customers to make it their supermarket of choice.
Viking @ Oct 7th 2009 10:17AM
Can someone tell me what I've missed?
Isn't this the same old Fifa they have been making for the last 10 years? only you can now run in 360 degrees. Why the sudden hype? I can't possibly believe EA just stumbled over perfection worthy of hyping.
butaneko @ Oct 7th 2009 10:22AM
It gets better ever year bro! I used to be a Pro Evo diehard but now all I play is FIFA. I suspect there are a lot of people like me.
Viking @ Oct 7th 2009 10:29AM
But.. But.. I still love Fifa 98 for PS1 :/
Gaucho @ Oct 7th 2009 10:29AM
I'm still kinda a pro evo die hard, this year i'm having trouble though.
greg19735 @ Oct 7th 2009 10:31AM
yah its all FIFA now. since fifa has jumped to the next gen its been getting better every year. 06 was ok, 07 was a new engine but it didn't have the polish. 08 was good, 09 was amazing and 10 looks to continue that trend of getting better. 09 was actually good enough that if they change some AI stuff, add new options and game modes then its completely worth the $60.
Mr. Joe @ Oct 7th 2009 10:38AM
i agree with greg 100%.
Dale @ Oct 7th 2009 12:27PM
The last one I bought was FIFA '99. Even I'm tempted to come back into the fold. You're right, not worth buying every annual update, but I figure two hardware generations is enough of a gap.
Sangor @ Oct 7th 2009 10:18AM
The heavy discounts in supermarkets is the reason I decided to buy the game.
I have never been a big football fan, but I really am enjoying this game.
harvie @ Oct 7th 2009 10:29AM
Can't beat a headbutt goal in the first minute. I still can't decide between FIFA 10 or PES 2010. The last few PES games have been awful.
Ashitaka @ Oct 7th 2009 1:14PM
PES 2009 was full of glitches, don't know about PES 2010 though.
If I were you I'd pick FIFA (I'm probably gonna buy it by Christmas :P)
gunboat d @ Oct 7th 2009 10:31AM
i used to be an avid FIFA fan. I cleaned up as Arsenal with Anelka and Bergkamp et al back when I started with '99. but then i discovered Winning 11 while living in Japan. it was a far superior playing experience.
greg19735 @ Oct 7th 2009 10:33AM
you still feel that way now? i didnt play last years winning eleven but i didn't hear great things about it. fifa 99 tho - didn't that have bergkamp on the cover? i remember getting that for PC!
Eh @ Oct 7th 2009 12:39PM
How many years ago was that? Winning Eleven is crap compared to the last few FIFAs.
Chris_Mac @ Oct 7th 2009 10:43AM
"head-butt goal". Something tells me that Sliwinski is a massive football fan.....
kn @ Oct 7th 2009 11:11AM
or maybe it's a goal by Zedane using his headbutt skills

+SAM+ @ Oct 7th 2009 11:16AM
Imagine EA dropped all this yearly sports game update bullshit and poured all the money saved from it into another great original like Dead Space.... If only.... If only....
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Oct 7th 2009 11:20AM
Or they could do the smart thing and continue with the sports genre which makes them thier most money, especially madden and fifa... Unlike Dead Space with pales in sales in comparison to Fifa ¬_¬
Monkey Madness @ Oct 7th 2009 11:27AM
You've obviously not played Fifa 09 and 10.
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Oct 7th 2009 11:20AM
I'm not suprised, I have yet to find a red blooded male with a console who hasn't yet got Fifa 10
Mateus @ Oct 7th 2009 11:46AM
We Brazilian gamers are boycotting FIFA 10 for the poor support of Brazil and our teams.
It's absolutely disgusting we do not have the same quality from other countries like England and Italy. Even the United States it's has its league complete in the game. We are 5x World Cup champions and deserve more attention from EA.
Beu @ Oct 7th 2009 11:54AM
Cry me a river. At least you have your national team in there. I can't every play as Nigeria or any other decent African team, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana...hell I can't even play as Canada and they made the game here in Canada...
all this whinnying but I'll still be downlo....I mean buying it...he he
butaneko @ Oct 7th 2009 12:02PM
I thought the Brazilian league was in the game?
Bennyishere @ Oct 7th 2009 12:18PM
Liga do Brasil is in FIFA 10.
Dale @ Oct 7th 2009 12:29PM
I think the issue is that their portrayal is not accurate. Brazilian players are supposed to be paid ludicrous sums to sign for an English team, then spend most of their matches diving after every slight touch. This feature is not in FIFA '10.
Eh @ Oct 7th 2009 12:36PM
The Brazilian league sucks, they cant include every crappy league in the world. They have to choose some crappy leagues over other crappy leagues likely based on regional sales. Brazil isnt a big game market like europe, asia, and america. At least they throw in some of the better south american teams in the "rest of the world" category.
Spartan [Planeteer | Power of Sunshine & Lollipops] @ Oct 7th 2009 1:02PM
But, Eh,I see your point and agree, but Brasilians are the overall best in the world so that should count for something?
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Oct 8th 2009 4:13AM
Thats because the English and Italian leagues are the most dominant :P
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Oct 8th 2009 4:14AM
........unlike England in the actual world cup ¬_¬
Ferdasyn @ Oct 8th 2009 5:30AM
What about my club, Rangers? We reached the UEFA Cup Final last year, are Scottish Champions this year and are currently playing in the Champions League. We are rated 3 and a half stars this year, none of players have detailed faces, attributes are terrible and somehow Celtic's players have much better stats when they have achieved much less than us recently.
Ibrox is one of only two UEFA 5 star Stadiums in Scotland, was in the older FIFAs but isn't any more.
All they seem to care about is English/Spanish and Italian Leagues, the rest of us get screwed over as usual.
RKN @ Oct 7th 2009 12:28PM
Why EA must you hate the PC so much to give the PC version a PS2-era engine and not the 360/PS3 engine?
Ashitaka @ Oct 7th 2009 1:24PM
Dunno. I guess that sports games, unlike other types of games, are meant to be played in consoles ;)
sarahozturk @ Oct 7th 2009 12:44PM
Turkcell Super Lig for the win!!! [C*]
JaxDaxter @ Oct 7th 2009 12:55PM
I live in England, and just to say the first 3 days it was released i'm fairly sure it was £25 in every major retailer, why I don't know. However this reduction is a massive reduction from the usual £35-£40 price. So I think this may be a fairly big reason as to why it's sold so well. This may not be true in other european countries however.
They may just really like Fifa
oreomaster101 @ Oct 9th 2009 3:49PM
Yo other sports games, i'm really happy for you and imma let you finish, but EA: FIFA 10 is the fastest selling Sports game of all time. OF ALL TIME
Sniggzy @ Oct 7th 2009 1:25PM
Fifa is the best sports game other than NHL 2010. I've put in over 100 hours into FIFA 09 and i'm still improving. It's fantastic. After playing FIFA 10 demo i can essentially say that i will be purchasing it soon as its released here in N.A. The gameplay is much more fluid and plays incredible
Jason @ Oct 7th 2009 1:57PM
I admit its a fantastic game and go as far to say its one of the best Fifa's since '99 but they do need to sort out some online issues.
Apparently their 'GameFace' technology has been down pretty much since a few days after launch and cause a huge flurry of forum activity.
I get both PES and Fifa when it comes to football games nowadays and play them both for different game modes.
cafecito @ Oct 7th 2009 5:33PM
People are commenting this year's FIFA is superior to Konami's PES, so that'll surely reflect in sales.
fred @ Oct 7th 2009 7:10PM
october 20 seems so far away!!!!!!!!!!!
Zoe Chastain @ Oct 8th 2009 8:55AM
I love soccer but certainly I never play it in official game and regardless in this game FIFA 10 that's only way that I can prove that I'm playing in official game.
calvinebert @ Oct 12th 2009 10:38AM
i dont know why the dont have the other brazilian leagues!!! some of the teams can get relegated and others promoted, so its like all the brazilian teams are in all leagues so why dont they have all 3 or atleast 2??? thats so stupid!!! they could atleast have it as downloadable content you could by! brazil is one of the best countrys for football in the world and we deserve atleast to have our teams in there! i feel sorry for the fans of the teams that got relegated and wont be on the A league, but atleast flamengo is there hehehe;) but and even tho we are in there, they give us shit attributes and make us look like we dont even stand a chance to the european teams, even tho we have won many international leagues and kicked their asses so why fifa? why dont you just make our teams the way they are?!?!?!?!?!?!?
