Hands-on: Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier

Ready at Dawn proved with Daxter that the formula can be done well on the handheld. The studio intelligently streamlined the experience for the PSP, creating level designs that constantly drove the player forward. The controls always felt natural with Daxter's bugspray pack easing platforming sections -- a necessary feature, considering the PSP's less-than-ideal analog nub. Three years after Daxter's release, High Impact Games (developers of last year's mediocre Secret Agent Clank) ignores all the small innovations made by Ready at Dawn, and The Lost Frontier suffers greatly for it.
Gallery: Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier
It's not immediately evident how flawed The Lost Frontier is when you begin playing it. Perhaps it's because that's exactly what you don't do for the first ten minutes. From the moment the PSP logo fades away, players are thrust into a lengthy cutscene with Jak, Daxter and Keira searching for more eco. What's eco, you ask? If you're new to the franchise (or you've simply forgotten in the five years since Jak 3), The Last Frontier makes no attempt at reintroducing the world or the characters that inhabit it. What is Jak's secret ability? Who are the Precursors? Don't expect any answers. Perhaps this is simply an oversight of the preview code, but we're certain many people would appreciate a "previously on" recap of the franchise's lengthy story.
Eventually, players will take control of Jak's ship in an air combat battle against sky pirates. The gameplay should be familiar to anyone that's played any flight combat game before. There's no lock-on -- at least at the beginning of the game -- so players will have to manually aim at the targets. There are also a few evasive maneuvers mapped to the D-Pad, although the lack of any threat didn't really encourage much fancy flying.

The aerial combat wasn't broken, nor was it particularly inspired. The controls did feel spot-on, though, so there's the possibility that later levels may reach the chaotic fun of a Star Wars or even a Ratchet & Clank game. The platforming, however, felt broken even in this close-to-release state. Considering platforming makes up most of a Jak game, this seems rather troublesome.
The act of jumping shouldn't be such a trial, but it is in The Lost Frontier. See, Jak doesn't have a jetpack like Daxter, so players are relegated to using his double jump (and spin). Unfortunately, the spin doesn't really give players a boost of any sort, making platforming a bit more difficult than it should be. The camera is also problematic, with players needing to constantly make manual adjustments to see where to go. Even worse, the camera can only be moved on the X axis. The default low angle makes it difficult to gauge distances, and adds to the problematic nature of the platforming sequences.
Unfortunately, combat is no better, with the camera significantly hampering the experience. Melee combat is not fun; needing to manually adjust the camera as enemies constantly move out of view is frustrating. Gunplay is also not particularly exciting, with the over-generous auto-lock removing any semblance of challenge. Why not take a page from Ratchet & Clank and give players an over-the-shoulder option in addition to standard lock-on controls? And yes, once again, the camera refuses to follow enemies in any way, making The Lost Frontier a constant battle with the PSP's shoulder buttons.

The best moments of The Lost Frontier look to happen beyond the core platforming gameplay. For example, the Dark Jak sequences promise adrenaline for a game that otherwise feels stagnant and boring. It also helps that players won't need to fight the camera during these sequences.
It's a shame that The Lost Frontier isn't any better than it is -- at least, in the preview code we've begrudgingly played. Fans have waited so long for a proper continuation of the Jak and Daxter franchise, and it doesn't seem like they're going to find it in this PSP game.

It's so sad that Naughty Dog essentially left this series for dead for Uncharted. I always preferred the Jak series a little more, and I knew when this was announced for psp and a different developer that it wasn't going to end well. It's a shame.
thetveye @ Oct 8th 2009 10:04AM
Well, they did the same for Crash Bandicoot, and look what happened to that series.
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Oct 10th 2009 10:45AM
Crash 2 is my favourite game ever and after Naughty Dog gave Crash away I was so pissed off. Twinsanity was bad enough but when Crash of the titans came out, my soul died. Spyro had the same story except instead of my soul going 6 feet under, it was my appendix.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 7th 2009 3:09PM
Noooooo! Damn you to hell High Impact Games. You have sullied what was once a AAA franchise.
I hope Naughty Dog does a DMC2 and pretends this game never happened.

With any luck Naughty Dog will jump in and make the next one. Bringing the Franchise to PS3 and ND doing it will make it a classic for sure
BLipp18 @ Oct 7th 2009 3:13PM
didnt jak always have a double jump and spin that did very little to help going far distances?
Raider197 @ Oct 7th 2009 3:17PM
That's really disappointing, I've been waiting for years for the next Jak game and I actually thought this one could be good, but after reading this I'll have to give it a miss.
Hopefully Naughty Dog will take a break from the (brilliant) Uncharted series after the release of Among Thieves and they'll get to work on making a current-gen console sequel to Jak 3

"Yeah it's ironic I have a picture from a motion picture in a series of 3 that has literally made multi-millions to the production company as well as the film makers themselves. That's exactly the kind of action that forces people to shut up shop and not make any more. Oh no wait...that's just Naughty Dog.
Lovely way to go off topic considering the motion picture industy and the games industry run their affairs in 2 totally different ways."
So what you are saying is that Naughty Dog should follow the lead of Hollywood in doing the same crap over and over and milk a franchise for as long as they can (such as Spiderman which should have been left at 2 instead of already announcing two more movies after the disaster that was the last one) instead of doing their own thing and creating something new and original.
Or for that matter Team Ico should have done just a direct sequel to Ico rather than creating a whole new experience with Shadow of the Colossus. After all the first game worked fine, right? And Sucker Punch should have stayed with Sly Cooper for as long as the company exists because it was a great game last gen instead of giving us Infamous? Why bother innovating and trying something new is your premise?
I have to disagree. The Jak series was great and it will live in my memory and my library. If ND decides to do a new game I'll certainly enjoy it but as it stands I am glad they created something new. Not only they created one of the best games ever but also one of the best characters, surpassing even previous work. The company wasn't afraid to move on from Crash when they lost the rights, and they did the same moving on from Jak to Nathan. Each time they created something new and more exciting. I certainly didn't want to go back to a new Crash after playing Jak and the same happens with Nathan now. I can say for sure that with the amazing quality Naughty Dog has put in each generation I am certainly excited about the prospects of what they will put out once they decide to move on from Uncharted.

Sorry Raider. My last comment was posted in the wrong place.
SpiderMike @ Oct 7th 2009 3:27PM
I, too, am disgusted how ND left J&D to die while they continued with that bastard creation of a game, Uncharted.
The J&D series was a staple of greatness on the PS2 and proudly stood toe to toe with Ratchet & Clank, despite the latter having various incarnation more than the former.
It's a shame when devs let their own franchises die. In a sense giving the finger to the fanbase they have already built up. I Hope they don't pick it back up and just let it go out with a wheeze at the hands of some second rate PSP devs.
Kodros @ Oct 7th 2009 3:49PM

So, what you are saying is that devs should milk the crap out of their franchises until they are so generic and boring that nobody cares anymore? Kinda ironic that you have a Spiderman 3 avatar pic eh?
Viking @ Oct 7th 2009 3:55PM
I think it's a difference between letting a franchise die with a game which was one of the best in the last gen, rather then just letting second class developers making a bad PSP game, just for the hell of it.
They should just have left the series with Jak 3 (possibly Jak X, 'cause I enjoyed it), and not letting others continuing it.
And in response to the milking: How long have Nintendo milked the hell out of Mario and Zelda? Seems like that's 'ok'.

Kodros @ Oct 7th 2009 4:45PM

No it's not, as I said I would have liked to see them do a PS3 Jak game...which given there past history would have been an incredibly fun game.

Damn it. Well I'll likely get it anyways because it is quite cheap, and I've been waiting for a new Jak game for ages.
Rein [Prime Minister of the city-state of New Bjork] @ Oct 7th 2009 3:30PM
This makes me so sad. The Jak series was one of my favorite series last gen and to hear that it's long awaited sequel is not up to par is kind of heartbreaking.
This also made me realize that when I was addicted to gaming a several years ago, I totally sold the first three Jak games in order to buy other games from Gamestop. I really regret that decision now.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 7th 2009 3:31PM
Damn, Jak 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, this is downright crushing to hear this sucks. I really really hope Naughty Dog picks it back up sometime, I wouldn't want to divert them away from Uncharted, but they're a pretty big studio they should be able to have 2 teams right? : (
Solace @ Oct 7th 2009 5:22PM
from the behind the scenes video from Uncharted 1 ND seems like a pretty small group of people, their offices seems tiny in the tour and guess what they actually have a dog in the office how cool is that.
Naughty Dog isnt like an insomniac which probably has much more people of staff to split between series.
Viking @ Oct 7th 2009 3:33PM
I don't know how different Naughty Dog is from Insomniac in terms of company size, but I imagine them being very alike. But Insomniac manages to juggle between their cartoony PS2 game, and their new PS3 franchise. I don't see why Naughty Dog shouldn't be able to do the same.
I demand a PS3 Jak game with Naughty Dog's name on it!
Neptune @ Oct 7th 2009 3:39PM
Wiki says Insomniac has aprox 180 employees and Naughty Dog has 100. Don't know if that is accurate anymore since Insomniac has formed the new studio this year.
BLipp18 @ Oct 7th 2009 3:40PM
iirc, iG has like 150+ ppl, and they have like 3 teams, and i think ND has around 100 and as far as we all know, all of them were focused on U2, plus ND is sonys big PS3 engine creator and helps other devs with the PS3, so they might have the resources for more than 1 game at a time
Ashitaka @ Oct 7th 2009 6:51PM
cartoony PS2 game? Are you fucking kidding me? More like pixar-esque PLAYSTATION3 game
Jacksons @ Oct 7th 2009 10:41PM

Zodiac @ Oct 8th 2009 1:10AM
Oh, sure, it's not like they didn't want to continue it! But they stuck to their promise, and they gave up and handed it over to HIG.
el serpiente @ Oct 7th 2009 3:41PM
I've never played a Jak before. If I had to buy only one of the series for a taste, which of the PS2 games should I buy?
Neptune @ Oct 7th 2009 3:46PM
Jak 3 is probably the best choice. Jak 2 was the hardest one and the first was pure platformer, thus different from the later two.
Raider197 @ Oct 7th 2009 3:46PM
The first one, it was the best one.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 7th 2009 3:50PM
Hell, why not buy all three? They're all quite entertaining and shouldn't be too much of an expense by now, especially if you (gasp) buy them used.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 7th 2009 3:51PM
The first one is nothing special at all, it's just your typical 3D platformer. Start with 2 and then 3 if you care about the story, both are great games though.
el serpiente @ Oct 7th 2009 3:55PM
It's not a matter of cost, but time young inchworm. When you get a bit older, maybe you'll understand.
Viking @ Oct 7th 2009 3:59PM
The first is a straight up platformer for everyone with a mute hero and a sidekick doing all the talking. Jak 2 took a 180 turn, going for a more grown up style, with GTA like city and is a platform shooter, same for Jak 3.
I'd say you should start with Jak 2, it's the longest and is very important for the story. Jak 3 is kinda short, but a more polished game.
Buy both
el serpiente @ Oct 7th 2009 4:01PM
It's funny, Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter always melted into the same thing in my mind. I missed a lot of the PS2 generation, and now I am going back to find some gems I may have missed and Jak keeps on popping up. I'll try 3 first.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 7th 2009 4:42PM
In response to that: Memory cards, my friend. Memory cards.
Jacksons @ Oct 7th 2009 10:48PM
Yeah, start with 3. Jak 2 is a train wreck, in my opinion. You spend the majority of the time wandering around a needlessly huge city. There's very little to see or do in the city, it just eats up a ton of time going to the next location. The only reason I kept playing 2 was to see what Daxter would do in the next cutscene.
jak33 @ Oct 10th 2009 1:44PM
lol, I named myself after that guy (4th grade started spelling my nake jak instead of jack)
Anyway, It depends on what you prefer.
Jak and Daxter was a great game, yet got a little repetitive. While there were plenty of different locations (a ton) you were always doing the same thing. The cool thing was the eco power ups and the zoomer sequences, but thats it.
Jak II is my favorite game of all time. Countless missions, plenty of side missions, open world city thing, and a lot of out of city locations, in which every time you went back, you had a new section that was there before, but you didn't notice. The gunplay was cool and not overdone, and the platforming sequences were the perfect difficulty (as in "Dude, you cant just run around and shoot stuff, and because you weren't careful, you're getting sent back a considerable amount of play time")
Jak 3 was okay... it was too short, and not enough jak. I haven't played it in 5 years though, so maybe I'm a bit off... There were too many guns and vehicles, if you like that, just get Jak X (also amazing)
My opinion:
If you like pure platforming, Jak and Daxter. If you like you some guns and want a challenge (In addition to the longest game to complete-not a bad thing) then Jak II. IMO the best of the series.
HeXeN @ Oct 7th 2009 3:46PM
That's not too surprising.Hopefully the series won't be to ruined after this game so maybe Naughty can come back to it unlike Crash.
BLipp18 @ Oct 7th 2009 4:13PM
well, not much they could have done about crash, he was owned by universal/sierra (now activision) and they were bought by sony

Big fan of Jak games, but I really hope they don't ruin the storyline , but it's a Jak game so I'm buying it. Hope Naughty Dog takes back Jak and Daxter for another game.
The Bandit @ Oct 7th 2009 5:05PM
This is the same exact thing that happened to Crash Bandicoot. Naughty Dog gave up the rights to some other company, and there is a continuous stream of crappy Crash games now. The classic PS1 Naughty Dog Crash games were great.
Seems like Jak and Daxter is going the same way. It's following a pattern.
Viking @ Oct 7th 2009 5:40PM
Naughty Dog never owned all the rights to Crash, so when they didn't want to develop Crash more, Vivendi gave the rights to whoever wanted it. But Naughty Dog is the only owner of Jak if I remember correctly, if they want, they can still make a Jak 4. But Jak won't do as bad as Crash.
In terms of following a patterns, the last Uncharted game ND makes will be Uncharted 4, and it will be a racer. (Jak X and Crash Team Racing were all the 4. and last ND games)
Deaddy @ Oct 7th 2009 5:10PM
