When questioned about the possibility of a dedicated gaming handheld vs a phone with multimedia functionality, Microsoft's Robbie Bach expressed his hesitation to enter either market to attendees of yesterday's.
First Annual Microsoft Open House. The Entertainment and Devices division prez said, "The portable market's an interesting market ... you have to decide which direction the market is going." Rather than pursue the phone with gaming/media functionality route that Apple has taken, Bach thinks current technology simply isn't good enough yet.
"You have to decide if the dedicated devices in the portable market are going to continue to grow, or whether the phone that you get is going to get powerful enough and battery power management is going to get good enough that people are going to look at it and say 'No, I just want one device that's going to have some games on it, some music on it, some video on it.' I'm probably more biased to think that's the direction where the market is going."
Though he didn't mention an iPhone competitor or a dedicated gaming device, Bach hinted at the possibility, saying the Xbox and Zune are integrating at "a
steady drumbeat." That steady drumbeat likely won't lead to much in the coming months though, as he noted, "There is a CES two years from now where people will look back and say 'Wow! Look at everything they did.'" At that point we'll only be four years from
flying cars and hoverboards, so let's hope that Microsoft has some
serious future stuff up its sleeves.

I didn't know there was a future for Microsoft handheld gaming....
rickjamess04 @ Oct 7th 2009 10:03PM
Well I didn't know that there was a future for MS handheld gaming either. Although, based on what I've read it sounds like whatever MS has up their sleeves involves flying skateboards...
That's about as funny as a screen door on a battleship.

WHERE'S MY PSPHONE OR EVEN A DSPHONE WOULD BE NICE!!!!!!!!
Mychas @ Oct 7th 2009 9:43PM
Personally, I would rather have a toasterphone.

I would rather have a rock lobster.
Rock Lobster!

We were at the beach
Everybody had matching towels
Somebody went under a dock
And there they saw a rock
It wasn't a rock
It was a rock lobster

Archi...I think I'm 100% confused by that comment.

Its been done on Family Guy as well, so not getting it makes me a sad panda...
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 7th 2009 9:58PM
Ugh, Family Guy! That's my queue to get the F out of this lame thread. Lame show for lamers.

Family Guy makes me a sad panda.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington] @ Oct 7th 2009 9:59PM
It has it's moments, but overall, it's tepid.
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 7th 2009 10:01PM
It only has "moments" because it's geared for the ADHD generation. Either that or it holds a joke that wasn't funny, way too long until you're forced to pretend its funny.
Family guy gets hit in the shin.
Five minutes of him hissing and rolling on the floor.
Cut to commercial.
Eff Family Guy!
[ArchiGamer] [80% ENTERTAINMENT BY VOLUME] @ Oct 7th 2009 10:02PM
It makes a sad panda as well, but Rock Lobster was done in of there shows and if no one gets seeing as the show is popular(why I don't know) that's a bit upsetting.
Anyway, I'm going to see the premiere of the new season of South Park!!! Suck it!!
[ArchiGamer] [80% ENTERTAINMENT BY VOLUME] @ Oct 7th 2009 10:03PM
It used to be funny, and not just random ass moments that make no sense and add nothing to the show.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington] @ Oct 7th 2009 10:04PM

Brock Samson is one of the best character out of Venture Bros.
Well, other than The Monarch.

PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Oct 7th 2009 10:16PM
a forum would be a great idea. we should email someone about that... anyways, Family Guy went down the shit drain a LOOOOONG time ago. Its become this show that kills 10 minutes of its 23 minutes showing you peter rub his shin. why?

mynk @ Oct 7th 2009 11:19PM
i think the most attractive thing about family guy is it looks at society as a whole and what we have become, and reflects that back, situations that could be, situations that are, and situations that are obvious sarcastic reflections of what happens, depicted in different manners.
if you're a socially involved person, because family guy really hasn't picked up on chatroom and comment society yet, you'll really find not only humor, but meaning rather meaning in their jokes, which really let you reflect and have a little laugh out of life.
because in all seriousness, if you're still busy being on chatrooms hating on shows that really make some people laugh, then its you that i feel sorry for, not the generation that watches the show.
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 8th 2009 12:27AM
@mynk
Who's sad? You're the one who wrote a fucking essay about finding Family Guy attractive. At least I picked a cartoon woman (kinda) for whom to carry around a secret boner.
And "F-" for bad capitalization, BTW.
Tom Kalinske, CEO. (tomkalinske.blogspot.com) @ Oct 7th 2009 9:49PM
Wouldn't it have to have a 'present' to have a 'future'?
I'm confused 8(
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 7th 2009 9:53PM
You seem easily confused. Sony wasn't always in the handheld market, neither was Nintendo. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Tom Kalinske, CEO. (tomkalinske.blogspot.com) @ Oct 7th 2009 9:55PM
Really, Sega made the best handhelds.
After all, who else but Sega could make the Nomad! It was so cool, it drained SIX AA batteries in THREE HOURS!
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 7th 2009 9:57PM
The Nomad WAS the badassness. You know your toy is badass when it uses up batteries faster than your mom's "toys".
R (Planeteers | Power of Penile Pulse) @ Oct 7th 2009 11:50PM
I have a working Sega Game Gear with about 20 games, the magnifer, AC adapter, power block (batter pack), and a Game Gear carrying case.
Booyah?
Tom Kalinske, CEO. (tomkalinske.blogspot.com) @ Oct 7th 2009 11:51PM
I've got a working Sega Nomad with the battery pack, the rechargeable battery pack, eight games, a Nomad case, and an AC adaptor.
Game Gear rocks, though.
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 8th 2009 1:16AM
I wish I had a Nomad, or a Genesis for that matter. It was rare when I got to play Sega games as a child, as I was too poor to afford anything other than a used NES with a power cable which had been chewed through by the seller's ferret (holy shit I can't believe my stoner ass remembered all this). All my friends had Supers, but non of them has Segas.
Then my brother and I saved up all kinds of money and bought ourselves a Playstation, but forgot that we needed games and another controller as well. I got Blasto from a friend for Christmas one year, which was the only game I owned back then. I think my brother got an old MLB game offa a cousin. I rented Chrono Cross like 5 times though.
I suppose all that is why I'm now addicted to games as a fully employed adult. Speaking of employment, I've got to get to bed: work tomorrow!
Stevetrop @ Oct 7th 2009 9:54PM
It would be best for ms to focus on the console gaming market. It has taken them some time now to get some credibility as being a strong force in the home gaming market. They would most likely get decimated if they decided to enter in the hand held market.
Not saying they couldn't make a good hand held system just as a Xbox fan I'd rather see their attention put on that console.
Dv8thwonder @ Oct 8th 2009 12:03AM
Zune HD w/ portable Halo might be the gateway drug Microsoft needs for mobile gaming success.
johnnynumber5 @ Oct 7th 2009 10:14PM
They should certainly ease into things and I think adding XBLA type gaming functionality a Zune would be a good start. I have an iPhone, PSP & DS and in my opinion the PSP & DS are way better for gaming even though the iPhone has it's few shining moments. If they could put some of their better bite sized offering on a PMP it would probably be pretty successful.

Hoffer @ Oct 7th 2009 10:40PM
The thing that stinks about a phone being a gaming machine is you can really only have one. If MS, Sony, Nintendo, etc... all coming out with gaming phones, you can really only buy one. Most people don't have 4 phones, but they might have 4 portable gaming consoles.
I have an iPhone, but don't think it is the greatest portable game machine. It has some fun games, but I need real controls for real games. None of this tilting the screen to turn.
