I think this would be pointless if Amazon didn't have their own pricing. I expect a lot good deals.

I concur--thats the best thing about this. Even though I'm iffy on digitally distributed games, this is good news for consumers, especially if other retailers get on board.

Not pointless if you plan on buying a gift for friends. There was no way to do that previously, and now you can.

This is one of my biggest concerns of digital distribution - if only one store is selling a game (ie PSN, etc.), then there's no incentive to lower prices, as there's no competition. Plus, this answers the question of how game developers plan on keeping retail stores happy if they're going down the road of digital distribution.

Of course, then there's always the argument of if you're going through the trouble of buying from Amazon, why not wait a few extra days, get the disc, and then have the option of lending it to a friend or selling it.

This should alleviate many folks concerns regarding digital distribution of games. One of the great things about digital copies of music and movies is that they are sold from many different outlets so the market keeps things competitive. I can only hope that more purchasing outlets are involved as it can really only be good for the consumer.

Here's hoping for some great Black Friday digital sales from Amazon.

Of course Sony has to throw in the usual: "Of course, we've been looking into this way before Microsoft thought of it" comment. Stop lying Sony. If you had been you would've done it first.

he didn't say that. He said they were talking about it before the Xbox Integration happened. I don't think he even has a way of knowing when Microsoft started thinking about it. They do know when Microsoft actually made it happen and they had something in motion before that was announced.

Twisting words or not, Mr. Lempel made an overly-defensive statement. The public doesn't care who was first, all we care about is that we all eventually do it. I love Xbox LIVE on Amazon and I've hoped for this for a long time (I can FINALLY gift games to my cheap friends without buying points/funds cards!). Everything's gotta be a competition... yeesh.

thats what they do tho gobo...just like the thing with the WandyGlobe....they brought up the fact that they HAD been working on it LONG before the Wii came out....and if not for older videos I'm sure a lot of people would not have believed that...

I think this the smartest thing Sony has done about digital distribution because foreign countries can buy instantly without having to have a US address and stuff... It's great!

Hope amazon makes competitive prices against UMDs :D

The good from this will be when Amazon runs sales, and I haven't tried yet but if the ECA discount works for those thats also a plus as well. Unlike Wii or 360 PSN already uses real money so either way you are still using a credit card, but wtih the added benefit of Amazon gift cards as well

"...and why the proposed UMD conversion program never saw the light of day."

We all know why that never saw the light of day. Too much legal paperwork, even for first party games.

If people still want to do the UMD swap, this Amazon deal is the next best thing. You can sell your old games back to Amazon for trade-in credit, then use those proceeds to buy PSN stuff straight from Amazon It would be nice if the entire PSN store were available there, but I guess we have to wait for that.

We are sorry...

Looks like Sony and Joystiq both avoided the obvious issue of Microsoft allowing users to buy off Amazon and Xbox.com.

not really, Eric was asked about being able to purchase items on PlayStation.com eventually. Did you overlook that?

I guess I got voted down, huh? I'm assuming no one noticed that nowhere in the interview was the fact that Xbox has already allowed downloads through Amazon.com and Xbox.com mentioned.

My comment was about how no one mentioned the comparison to Xbox, not whether he asked about Playstation.com support.

On occasion I will purchase PSN games but only if they are links thru cheapassgamer.com Other than that I originally like the whole PSN store setup from my PS3.

Definitely the gift card and cleanliness of stores.
It's really annoying to get gift cards for Walmart, Target, Kmart, Amazon, iTunes and the PSN, all for $10-$20, when I want a single game that costs say $30. All that money and you can't even buy one thing you want with it.

I'm asking for 1 gift card for christmas - Amazon. Easy. Nice.
