PSA: Don't download your PSP Go Rewards games to your PS3

Ask these PlayStation forum users, who discovered that a kink in the DRM for the free European rewards program games meant that downloading the games to a PS3 before copying them to a Go invalidated the licenses. In short, if you download your free games to a PS3 first, you will have not free games, but free large, useless files.
Sony is aware of the issue, advising new users to download their freebies directly to the PSP so they can play them at some point. If you've already made the "mistake" of redeeming your codes on the PS3? "We're still coming up with a solution for those who have redeemed the voucher and are now receiving the error message," forum moderator moshii says, "and we'll update you as soon as we have a solution for you."
Kind of makes you nostalgic for when the only method of transfer for games was from the box to the system via the "your hand" protocol, right?

Yeah, it protects the rights of the copyright owner. These companies are quick to tell you that. What they won't tell you (except possibly in buried legalese) is how they actually manage to do that. It's not good.
So here's a more accurate definition: "Protects the copyright owner's rights while trampling on the rights of everyone else."

You know, last I checked Nintendo offers no solution at all to transfer old NES, SNES, and N64 carts to digital.
Why is nobody crying about that? People have no problem re-buying those games for the Wii.
Why does Sony get nothing but shit for the GO, despite still supporting the PSP1000?

Sony did learn, it's called "trying to keep people from getting free shit." that's why ANY company uses DRM in regards to digital content. The companies either keep going with RM and eventually running into issues like this (most every major company dabbles in it in some form or another) or they give up the fight and hope people are nice enough not to pirate things "too much".
This is why so many companies are in such a rush to push the digital download agenda, so they can try and control the piracy of content but the flip side is ALWAYS inconvenience to people trying to play by the rules.

so true. i'm sure the hate will die down eventually, however right now sony is doing a lot of things wrong for the launch. the same thing happened to the PS3 and you see how that turned out (good, for those thinking i'm trolling). After they beginning releasing more PSone classics and more UMD Legacy titles and with new titles releasing day and date with retail, the Go will pick up steam (no pun intended). But i digress... back to the main point. Sony is having a really shaky launch and they have no one to blame but themselves. first the price, then the store update for the second week, now the incentive is null. whats next?

It would be a completely different situation if they offered the games that you actually own to you for your go, but they do not.
It would be a completely different situation if they had introduced digital downloads with a new system.
Instead they offer us the ability to spend $250 on a device locked down with clusterfuck DRM (like this story proves) and the ability to rebuy all of our games.

It's really depressing to see so many people who think this digital-only option is "fine." Do you people not like owning the games you purchase? When a company decides to force you to "upgrade" (make no mistake, this WILL happen in the next 5-10 years) and/or goes out of business and you can't play some of your games anymore, what are you going to do then? the difference between Steam and PSP Go is that steam is doing it right. We're all for digital distribution, but we want something meatier than apps and games meant for downloading to a handheld device. PSP Go pretty much took the best part of the system out and said that "snackable" games are better.

Steam was not a perfect launch either.
It took them time to get enough groundwork to be where they are today.
Halflife 2 launch had all sorts of outcries, the servers were flooded, drm issues cross countries and all sorts of crap. They did not have the flexibility to differentiate prices from retail and hardly offered any sales / discounts on games.
This is a brand new service and a brand new approach for sony. They will go through many of the same and diferent issues before it becomes something even half decent.
Personally i hope more crap like this crops up so that it gets addressed quickly.

I'm not flaming Sony when I say this, but I'd rather stay away from any console, handheld or otherwise, where the only medium is digital content. Nothing beats having the case for a game, and even though WiiWare, XBLA, PSN etc are great to have, I don't want them as my sole method of game play.

Actually some time ago I hoped that DD would help console market.
After all in PC market DD is mostly positive experience: prices went slightly down, older games (patched for new OS compatibility) reappeared, slew of indie games is now easily accessible.
But seeing how it is handled by console companies I'm really disdained. They essentially are killing all advantages of DD.

Sounds to me like the PSP Go was just a way to kick used-game buyers in the ass and boost new game sales. And with at least a few people now buying downloadable titles, there will eventually be fewer used games on shelves for the people with UMD PSPs.
But then again, hasn't selling more new games been the goal for everyone all along?

Part of the fail in that theory is that they are still millions of regular PSP owners who wont upgrade that will still buy UMDs as well as the continued sales of the 3000 that WILL buy UMDs and will still contribute to used game sales. Hell even the ones that DO buy a Go will probably trade in their UMDs initially anyway causing a contribution to what you're saying they're trying to avoid.

I also download on the ps3 then transfer... i have more than one psp so downloading it once and transfering is much easier. this is a problem that shouldnt have happened, lets hope its straightened out sooner than later.

See this is what bothers me most about the PSP Go & download only systems. Eventually a company is going to do a promotion where you can transfer a game from it's counsel to it's hand held and then BAM! DRM turkey slaps your face! The fact is with download only counsels gaming is going to become a whole lot more difficult. Just ask Microsoft and they're Arcade RROD problems. It took me forever to get back SF2!!

People who are buying the 3000 will probably end up buying more new games with fewer used games available.
I mean, lol, there will always be used games because not everyone will have a PSP Go and to be totally honest, my thought is a bit stretched and exaggerated. I doubt it will ever really come to the point where used game sales is ever a problem, at least in the Go's lifetime.
All I was really saying is I guess a download-based platform is a good way to bolster new games sales in both UMD and digital format.

The go was meant to appeal to the iphone generation. People who constantly buy and download 'apps' via credit card without a second thought because they think they're cheap and convenient.
