Because Steam promotes competition among game developers and publishers (*).

On consoles, the vendor (Sony, N, MS) and publishers work in clique with goal of extracting more money from you.

Those are clearly contradicting goals.

(*) Also Steam pretty much obliterated the "game publisher" institute on PC. Many games now are self-published by game developers directly. Publishers are only get involved when game devels want to have retail version too.

I meant the way they go about distributing content.

Digital distribution can be great, or horrible. My first impressions of Sony's attempt tend to lean towards the latter.

So, first everyone whined and cried about the UMD and then they mention a UMD-less handheld and now nobodies interested in it.... Why? Because a PlayStation 3 is only $50 more? The world is so confusing. They say AH YES WE WANT THIS! And then they realize they were wrong. Just like barking and complaining the PlayStation 3 was too expensive. Now that they have it at a lower price, they're saying.... Gee. I wish we had backward compatability. I'd pay for the ability to play my PS2 games on my PS3. That just goes to show, that Sony is listening to fans more than any other company, but fans are so fickle, that it confuses them. What is Sony to do?

They were not wrong. Sony customers simply haven't expected to be f***ed so openly and so soon.

Honestly, nobody expected that Sony would manage to make "the successor" to UMD even more painful than UMD itself was.

Why do people feel that they should get a free digital copy of a game when they buy the physical copy?

Can someone answer this for me?

I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at. The article is about people getting bonus games when buying the GO, not about receiving both physical and digital copies.

Actually, I haven't read that people feel that way anywhere. Unless your referring to how people want to have the ability to get digital copies of their already bought physical games?

I obviously have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

precisely! all of the people that complain about the go, nad how they can't transfer their UMD collections to digital.

I guess I agree with you. It is silly to expect Sony to just offer that service for free, or even for a small fee. I would just suggest to people that already have a nice collection of UMD's to stay away from to GO, especially considering that they probably couldn't re-purchase all of their games even if they wanted to. That part of the store just isn't up to snuff yet.

I just think it's odd. Sony gets so much crap about the GO and digital games but right now MS is offereing full 360 games for digital download and no one is complaining about having discs transferred over.

Well, this is a little different. XBOX360 does offer full game downloads, but Sony also offers original PS game downloads and I've never heard that complaint either. The GO is Sony's new system, and since it's all-digital it is subject to a slew of new problems and complaints. My personal opinion is that the GO is too expensive and offers too little. People shouldn't get too peeved over not being able to transfer their UMD's because the GO is not targeted at them.

Failed analogy about the 360 space. If you have the disc version, you can load it onto your HD. Yeah, you need the disc, but same shit.

Anyhow, if Sony wants to encourage current PSP owners to upgrade, it only makes sense to offer a way for UMD owners to get a digital version of the PSP games they have already purchased. It's their loss... the PSP GO is a complete fail.

But Sony does not want to encourage current PSP owners to upgrade, that is not their goal. The GO is targeted toward people who do not yet own a PSP. I don't want my view to be obscured here: I have a PSP 3000, I will not be purchasing a GO.

Wait so you can buy or rent a game and load it onto your xbox HDD?! and play it without the disc?!! I didn't know this...

Also, no, it's not the same shit. "Yeah you need the disc..." There you have it. It may be a nice way to cut back on load times and strain on the disc drive, but you still need the disc, so it's not really the same thing.
