We'll be the first to admit that the early gameplay footage for a canned The Flash game -- the one BottleRocket was rumored to be making for Brash -- looks a little rough, as you'll see right after the break. But considering how early the footage is (just six months into development), we can't help but think there's a little something there.
We don't know if it's the animation, the sense of speed or maybe just the borrowed Danny Elfman score, but we're feeling like this canceled rendering of the Scarlet Speedster is a definite missed opportunity.
Flash as a comic book character is fine, but as a video character its near impossible to reproduce the sense of speed with exact pin point control with Flash.
I think if they make a flash game to get the theme right they should change perception to where everything moves normal but when you start to run everything goes slow-motion. Right now it just looks kinda like the Superman game with the sprint button stuck on.
Plus a little nagging point in 00:53 flash moves so fast he's not effected by gravity so why jump over water when he can run right over it and still gain speed? These guys should take a look at the comics and cartoons before making a game.
"slow mo" kinda defeats the purpose of a Flash game when the main character moves faster than the blink of an eye. Not saying your idea doesn't make sense since Flash has mention that everything moves slow in his eyes but if all he does is run around then the whole game will be "slow mo" which would get very boring.
I always wondered how you'd do combat in a Flash game, but I never thought about assigning each enemy to a button. Then you can jump between them REALLY fast and use the stick/pad to change the kinds of attacks used.
That said, I never really read the comics... is the Flash basically invincible against standard goons? I can't imagine fighting against anyone moving that fast.
I'm not a huge DC fan but this looks like it could've been a really fun game. Definitely getting a Mirror's Edge vibe though, too bad it was canceled. Maybe someone else will pick it up? Please?
How about a Justice League game that gives each character their own missions. Like it was said, too much Flash (or even Superman) would get repetitive, but if each of the characters got 2-3 levels, I think it could work.
You could have flight missions with Superman, Combat missions with Wondy, Chases with Flash, Stealth missions with the Martian Manhunter and any of them with Green Lantern.
The game looks like it has or I guess now "had" amazing potential. Obviously the graphics aren't that great, but I assume they just wanted some surroundings to test the gameplay mechanics, unless that was supposed to be for psp or something... than it's not half bad. The game play looks fun like any typical hero game, if they actually continued I think it could have done very well. Everyone loves free roaming city games with superheroes! Especially a super fast one...
I'm convinced a good flash-only game could be made but it wouldn't do well under the normal action/adv. genre. First off, a 2D anime style might give you a better sense of speed....
"I found one of my dad's old comic books where Superman does race the Flash. On the cover it shows both of them, neck and neck, at the finish line."
Flash Rebirth # 3 showed that Barry slowed down since the race was for charity and he wanted to give the people watching a good race (or something like that). Then he proceeds to leave Superman in the dust.
Superman is MUCH faster than the speed of sound. He may be slower than the flash, but he deserves more credit than just the equivalent of the speed of sound. For **** sake, we have jets that go faster than the speed of sound. Superman can see bullets flying in slo-mo, and those are already faster than the speed of sound. Regardless of how much faster Flash is, Supes still is the only other superhero in the Justice League who can even keep up.
I liked the concept of binding each enemy to a controller button and forcing you to juggle them; punch on one guy too long and another might be able to draw a bead on you, but you've got to focus on one for a little bit in order to get a combo off.
Also: Speed of light may be the Flash's top speed, but "I Can do Everything with no Effort at all: the Video Game" sounds pretty damn boring to me. So does "Oh Crap Where Did That Wall Come From Man It's Too Bad my Reflexes Aren't Also at the Speed of Light: the Video Game."
It's interesting to see so much feedback on a game that has been dead in the water for almost a year now. To clear a few things up: 1. The footage seen here is only 6 months of production and tools and what not were just starting to come together to allow us to create some cool stuff. We still had about a year to go on the project and if any of you here know anything about video games massive leaps and bounds are made in that amount of time. This game would have done the same. 2. As much as we would have liked Flash to run faster there are many technical issues (draw rate, collision detection, player control, etc.) that make "light speed" like travel impossible. The game needs to function and the player needs to be able to control his character and have fun with it and you need to design around that. That's not to say what you see here was his final speed. Again, we had over a year to go and that was one area we would have played with until it felt right. 3. The game was not canceled. Brash, the publishers went under and there was no one to pay for the game so it just went away. At the time both they and DC were incredibly happy with what was being done and the direction the game was heading. 4. The character was originally going to be Wally West as we had started work on it before DC had announced Barry was coming back. Would it have stayed that way? Guess we'll never know :) 5. And for the guy who commented that we should have watched the cartoons or read the comic books...we did. We're huge comic geeks and tore through hundreds of old Flash books as well as devoured all the cartoons Flash appeared in and we even watched episodes of the Flash live action TV show. We take our research seriously and did our best to represent Flash in a way that would actually work in a video game. There would have been no way to integrate all the things the Flash could do in comics into the game so we picked the powers and abilities with the most impact and the ones that screamed "signature move". He would have been a faithful representation of the Flash legacy.
