Pretty slick. I've always enjoyed Turn 10's art style and UI design.

Yeah the UI / menus etc are really slick and beautiful. Very "modern" in a minimalist type of way but it's just very classy and uncluttered.

They may look pretty, but Forza 2 had some pretty awful usability problems with the menus. Stuff like way too many button clicks to go back and forth between functionality often used together (e.g. arcade free laps and car upgrades screen).

Also the garage was a complete nightmare to use with a full garage. From what I can tell it hasn't been upgraded at all, just made look prettier.

F1 had a well organized, but really ugly UI. F2 wasn't bad but was difficult to use from the steering wheel, F3 looks nice. The load times are awful on all of them. I don't get it.

Still looking forward to it, despite the load times.

And before you say "loading the game on to the HDD will fix the load times", it didn't on F1 or F2.

Is this like the install that some PS3 games require?

No, this is different, and perfectly acceptable, even an awesome feature...

it's similar, but technically not the same. PS3 installs are mandatory and (i believe) done to compensate for the blu-ray's slower read speeds; this install is technically not mandatory (though you're missing out on a lot if you don't do it) and it's because of the limitations of the DVD storage space.

yes and no. to get all the content yes it is an install like the PS3 however you can play it straight without installing the second disc. it is slightly better than required install but really who wouldn't want to have every car and track on their game?

its more like dlc install discs

such as for oblivion and fallout. i'm surprised that its only 1.9GB tho seems like they could've add alot more cars and tracks if they had the time.

I would say yes and no. Most 360 content does not require a download to the hard drive to play, and Forza technically doesn't either, unless you want to play the extra cars/tracks. If you do download the extra content to the hard drive, you can still play the game itself from disc. A lot of 360 games can be installed on the hard drive if you want (this is a relatively recent feature since the last update), but not all games can be installed to the hard drive or operate worse on the hard drive than operating off disc.

Most PS3 content, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, seems to require you to install on the hard drive to play. Or at least every game I've aquired has. If there's an update to the title, and it seems like every title has an update, after you install to the hard drive, then you have to download the update, and the proceed to install that update. I've found that I really can't play a new PS3 game immediately until waiting some amount of time. In this respect, I really like how Microsoft has handled the operation and update of games. Updates occur for practically every 360 game as well, but there's no seperate download and install (there's simply download), and the updates are typically quick and tiny.

Nope! PS3's are modern day consoles and don't require a second disc as all PS3's are equipped with Blu Ray. That's why games like MGS4, Killzone2, Uncharted2 are PS3 only, it would take up to 8 dvd's on the PS3.

Not all PS3 installs are mandatory and most of the games now make it optional but you can choose to install if you want faster loading. Forza 3 requires you to install if you want all the content in the game ... and who wouldn't? It's not exactly the same thing but the only reason it's not mandatory is because then a HDD would be required to play the game and not all 360's come with an HDD. Basically half the content is one disc 2 so to fully enjoy the experience you need to install even though it's not a requirement to play the first disc.

Come on, it's nearly identical. PS3 installs are to get around the speed limitations of the optical drive, this install is to get around the space limitations of the optical drive.

No Xbox fanboy should be trying to write this off as different. And 10-15 minutes is a very long time. This is definitely deserving of a "go make a sandwich" joke.

@Sebastien
Pretty moot point now. "8 DVD's" is a huge exageration, but if more 360 games simply require you to install parts of the games, there's nothing stopping games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, etc, working on the 360 *without* the need to swap discs.

It'll simply require an intsall, which most PS3 games need anyway.

So I don't really see how PS3 fanboys can be trying to turn this to their advantage, you've just lost one of your biggest negative facts against the 360.

This is one of the wierdest choices I've seen a developer take in some time, but I guess they had to do what they had to do.

So, what happens when an online race ends and you want to switch cars before the next one, but don't have them installed yet? Can you add them on the fly or do you have to exit the race and then install them?

I also find it odd that you can only expierience a portion of the game if you don't have a hard drive installed. But do many people still have 360's without hard drives?

I might be wrong here, but I suspect most arcades have been purchased as secondary 360s, not primary. Anecdotaly I purchased mine because while I didn't need 2 HDDs, I did need 2 360s.

Also, I dunno if you're familiar with Forza or not, but the chances that you'd want to use a car that you don't already have installed is pretty slim... part of playing the game is tuning the hell out of your car, using one with default settings is rarely a happy experience when racing against people with actually tuned cars.

There are a lot of people who have 360's without HDD's especially when they dropped in price. My niece has a 360 without an HDD as I would imagine many younger and casual owners are the same. Most hardcore gamers probably have a HDD but the space may still be an issue.

@AOE

I don't know man I remember that Gamespot E3 demonstration where the developer guy was saying they made this game so the enthusiast who like to tune their car can play it and so the 6 year old who just wants to have fun can get on there and play. I don't think they are going exclusively for the hardcore simulation racing nut with this one.

Why? Seriously, these are the comments that only drive us farther appart.

Yes, some people hate Microsoft, some people hate Sony. That's just how it is, but to say that anybody who has a differing opinion on the matter is a fanboy (or uses "SUXXBOX" as a word) is just plain stupid.

Although I personally love my PS3 over other's 360s, I'm not blinded by this love. Forza looks great. This decision for the implimentation of multi-discs is not. Is it be cause the 360 is a "suxxbox" - no. It's because the concept of switching disc to access cars "suxxs." If it was switch discs for tracks, then that would be fine, and actually quite welcome, as I could decide which disc had the best tracks and stick to it.

Now, if you love track A, but love car B, you have to install car B, so you can give it a spin. Granted, the easy option is just to install all B cars and call it good. I would be much nicer to have all cars on both discs, and then I choose to install the tracks I like instead.

So, I love Sony, Xbox doesn't suck, and this decision kinda blows.

it's a valid point (we can have our preferences without being fanboys) but it'd be nice if you'd actually read the details of the install: you DO NOT have to switch discs to play a certain car or track. it's a one time, optional install.

So yeah it's actually worse than being able to switch discs because none of the content from the second disc can be played independent of the first. So, it's install or bust because you don't even have the option of switching discs if you don't have a HDD.

I'm a big PS3 fan (maybe fanboy, I dunno). But playing the F3 demo, it's going to be tough for GT5 to top it, except in the graphics department. It plays well, looks good enough and seems to bring back a lot of the stuff they annoyingly took out of F2, like point to point races.

I can't wait.

how do you mean 'in the graphics department'? We know Turn 10 scanned all the cars, & the GT team most likely did too, (if the PSP version is anything to go by, they just repeat a load of models - I've already seen 5 NSXs using one model).. so it'd be down to appearance in colours, scenery & the actual physics in the game..

Only extra content is on the 2nd disk, no engine. Therefore you have to play the game with the first disk.

I'm not sure. I almost bought an arcade because I currently own a PS3 and wanted to play some of the Xbox exclusive games. I think that there are probably a lot of people out there who purchase them for their kids for Christmas and birthdays because they are the cheaper option and the parents don't know any better.

So is the game running off of the harddrive or the disc? I mean, the easiest thing would be to have a two-part install process that won't close the installation process until the contents from both discs have been installed, then run the game from the harddrive with the first disc as a license-check.

I don't understand why they'd separate the additional tracks completely and force people to "import" it.

the game is running off both. say you drive on an imported track but are using a car from the game then its reading data from both sources.

the way they have the install process makes complete sense its so that the game is pretty much fully playable for people without a harddrive.

but if you wanted to fully install the game you would install the first disc though dashboard, and import all the tracks from the second.
