Impressions: 'Alan Wake' runs toward darkness
Previously on Alan Wake... in search of lost manuscript pages for a novel he doesn't recall writing, Alan Wake is searching the Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls for his missing wife. The pages aren't only a clue as to where Alan must search next, but seem to be the basis of a dark force taking over the small town.
In the latest demo of Alan Wake, the title character is without a weapon or the protection of a light source -- the only thing that can slow down the darkness taking over the small town. During this section of the game, Alan must retreat into the darkened forests, pursued by an FBI agent named Nightingale who is sure Wake is to blame for all of the terrible things happening in the town. Sadly, Nightingale may not be wrong.

While the first demo of the game showed off how light was an important ally for Wake's survival, lurking in the shadows is the only way he can survive pursuit from Nightingale and his trigger-happy squadron.
Alan Wake's E3 demo armed Wake with a pistol and light source, using beams of light to weaken enemies -- referred to as "The Taken" -- and allowing his weapon to inflict damage. At E3, Alan fought for survival. During this demo, he ran. But Wake wouldn't only have to contend with Nightingale during this demo, the darkness spreading throughout the land and infecting the citizens of Bright Falls also hunted the famed novelist.
Pieces of the game's story leaked out during the demo, Wake is still searching for his missing wife and lost manuscript pages, and the Sheriff of Bright Falls opposes Agent Nightingale's aggressive pursuit of a man she simply considers a "person of interest."
Increasing tension and suspense is Remedy's plan for Wake's moments of escape. Searchlights, gunshots and "the taken" all pursue the novelist, attempting to end his search for the woman he loves. It's difficult to say if it will work when the controller lands in players' hands. Sitting on a couch watching a man dodge enemies in the forest without having direct control didn't increase suspense for me, but I was pleasantly surprised that Alan Wake isn't just a third-person action game. What is clear is that Remedy is trying to tell a memorable story. Whether or not it will succeed is unclear, but Alan's adventure certainly has my interest piqued for more information before its Spring 2010 release.

Seems interesting enough to me.
Orchard Pear @ Oct 9th 2009 12:21PM
Alan Hill definitely looks good.
In fact, I might even purchase Alan in the Dark when it releases.
Space @ Oct 9th 2009 12:27PM
haha! oh you!
what about Resident Alan?
Dr. Bradwart @ Oct 9th 2009 12:37PM
If it's good, we might get sequels!
Like Alan Wars! And Alan Party!
Pedro @ Oct 9th 2009 12:49PM
Have you played Alan Wake to make such assumptions? And even if AW turns out to be a blend of those two games that you mentioned, is it a bad thing? Really?!
Alan Wake is one of those games that keeps being bashed for no reason, from vaporware to hypothetically shittyware...
Enosoma @ Oct 9th 2009 1:06PM
Pedro, it didn't much seem to me like he was bashing the game. Just pointing out similarities in a sarcastic, yet humorous way.
I also agree that the game seems to take a lot of cues from Silent Hill.
Gavin @ Oct 9th 2009 1:48PM
Pedro, it's hard for people not to take potshots at it. The game may be good, but it's hard to escape the Silent Hill high five it gives out with every preview.
It's also a highly delayed title and an XBox exclusive. that's 2 and a half reasons people could hate it, just there
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Oct 9th 2009 2:50PM
You guys need to go play Obscure. The whole shine-your-light-on-the-enemies-so-you-can-hurt-them mechanic is taken straight out of that game. Which in turn draws a lot of inspiration from Silent Hill and Resident Evil, of course.
arrrgh @ Oct 9th 2009 3:07PM
it is also taken from "alone in the dark: the new nightmare" where you specifically use a flashlight for lack of a better weapon to dispell the bad things you first encounter. Was a pretty good game. glad to see they're using more of this kind of mechanic.
VampireHunter Z @ Oct 9th 2009 5:58PM
I just watched Silent Hill the movie the other day and I freaking love it. I remember there were a lot of forum comments back when it came out that it wasn't good. I never played the game but the movie is a work of art. Very immersive.
uncle jesse @ Oct 9th 2009 12:21PM
I actually forgot this game was coming out. I'm so used to just hearing about over the years and that's it... just hearing about it. I'm glad it's finally coming out next year. Seems like it's up in the air whether or not this game will succeed.
Heavytoka @ Oct 9th 2009 12:23PM
This game looks Great! I can't wait to play it!
TheCoats @ Oct 9th 2009 12:24PM
the next 12 months are going to break the bank for me with all the good releases....
Dale @ Oct 9th 2009 12:28PM
One of the games that convinced me to buy an Xbox 360, it's been in development that long.
GiggMan @ Oct 9th 2009 12:32PM
I hear about this game and then I hear nothing more for a while.
Is it more story driven or is there a fair amount of action? Looking at it kinda puts me in the mind of Uncharted (I know little about this game) what can you compare it too?

this really looks like "Alone In The Dark" but better....
ChomskyKnows @ Oct 9th 2009 12:54PM
if the controls and camera are anything like Alone in the Dark, I will shoot myself in the face...
ybfelix @ Oct 9th 2009 12:59PM
@ChomskyKnows: the control and camera of In Alone in the Dark is perfect for you to shoot yourself in the face
Space @ Oct 9th 2009 12:35PM
how many times can the light vs. dark, pure vs. poison thing be done in video games? It's starting to turn into it's own genre.
Dr. Bradwart @ Oct 9th 2009 12:35PM
Oh, look. A light at the end of the tunnel of development hell...
ybfelix @ Oct 9th 2009 12:50PM
Didn't you post this article already? Or did I saw the same content on other sites a week ago?
wii60dsgamer @ Oct 9th 2009 12:54PM
GotY 2010 for me I hope. It looks fantastic. I've been anticipating this ever since the first announcement.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 9th 2009 1:07PM
not Halo: Reach??? wow
Jayvan @ Oct 9th 2009 1:58PM
...GOTY for 2o1o will go to God of War III
arrrgh @ Oct 9th 2009 3:10PM
lol
GOTY for games we havent played!!!! YES!
TheE3Guy @ Oct 9th 2009 1:01PM
This game looks badass
Lakail @ Oct 9th 2009 1:12PM
I have not heard much of this game. However, it seems like Luigi's mansion, without the vacuum cleaner of course.
eNrique @ Oct 9th 2009 1:24PM
I can see Duke Nukem hiding in the shadows.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 9th 2009 1:33PM
Off topic but has anybody play the Demo of Bayonetta? Holy ****!! is so fun.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) @ Oct 9th 2009 6:49PM
It's only on the Japanese PSN Store and Xbox Live. People are already saying the PS3 version will fail due to Graphical Differences. The people who say they'll get the Xbox version don't even have a PS3. Thanks for reminding me of a game I now unbearably hate, douche.
Back on topic, this will probably be one of those games which resemble art more than a game (Killer7, anyone?).
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) @ Oct 9th 2009 6:57PM
BTW, I already know I can make a new Japanese account to download the demo. But unless you're a Japanese gamer who owns a 360, you're fucked. If Platinum Games actually thought about it's customers who don't speak Japanese, they would've released the demo to US and UK gamers. Thanks, Platinum Games, for completely screwing your customers.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 10th 2009 12:23AM
Cry harder.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) (Steam: neon6669) @ Oct 14th 2009 2:53PM
I've gotten over it. I'll just fix my 360 since Mircosoft obviously won't do it (I've got no warrnaty, bought it used). I'm just dissapointed Sega fucked up the conversion of what was a really good game. And I already hate them enough from what they did with the Sonic franchise.
That reminds me, when's the last time you played a Sonic game and had fun?
UK31337 @ Oct 9th 2009 1:42PM
Why would Halo:Reach win GOTY outright, exactly?
At least we've seen Alan Wake running. All we know about Reach is a book, a load of hype and a few leaked, yet lacklustre, animations from it.
UK31337 @ Oct 9th 2009 1:43PM
DAMMIT, this reply system is borked. That was for Aggie, that question.
Space @ Oct 9th 2009 1:57PM
Halo: reach sounds like a kid's toothbrush.
Jayvan @ Oct 9th 2009 1:57PM
Alan Wake is like Uncharted when it first came out, but this game is hyped way to much. But this is Microsoft's Uncharted...not genre related but as in new IP. Get what I'm saying?
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Oct 9th 2009 10:19PM
It's sad that this has taken so long. It does look like an awesome game but if you want to compare Uncharted franchise to this, ND have made two generation defining games with some of the best visuals ever seen on a console in the time Remedy have made this. And while this is a good looking game, it isn't up to the level of Uncharted. I hope the story and the suspense are good, because we need more of that, Dead Space is the only game this gen that has actually scared me the slightest.
RKN @ Oct 9th 2009 5:20PM
Now Microsoft, are you going to continue your PC hate or will you finally let it abate and have this come to the PC where it was originally supposed to!?
abelpc @ Oct 10th 2009 5:29PM
Microsoft doesn't want us to game on our PC's.. Games are for 360s...
we all know what PC's are for... PORN..
Monica Dickey @ Oct 13th 2009 11:52PM
I don't know if I'm quite sold on this but it sounds kind of cool.
Like maybe it will bridge a gap between gaming and movies the way all sorts of people talk about but we never actually have seen happen.
Or it will be some sort of weird sequel to late 90's FMV games?
