Though Microsoft has been a bit cagey with a solid release date for the upcoming Facebok/Twitter/Last.Fm update for Xbox Live, eagle-eyed UK readers have spotted the phrase "Service launches 17th November 2009" on the UK Xbox website (seen above).
When we recently got to give the services a spin at Microsoft's First Annual Open House, the company wouldn't give us a set-in-stone release date, though MTV Multiplayer were told a public beta for the services would arrive for XBL Gold Members in the "middle-towards-end of October." We've contacted Microsoft for word on when the services will be arriving on this side of the pond, though ... well ... it's the weekend. We'd suggest you don't go holding your breath for that info until Monday.
[Thanks, Scump!]

Oh how I loathe Twitter. I think it'll be neat to check out how Faceboook works on Live, but I kinda doubt I'll be going back to it often and/or ever. I'm mostly just interested in photo albums, likely... I finally caved and put in my first stupid 'status update' or whatever on my page trying to find someone to go see the Pearl Jam show with last night, but to no avail :*(

Unfortunately I couldn't really head up to LA on a Wednesday night to see it with my buddy who is also pretty hardcore into PJ, and he couldn't head down to San Diego for the show last night :( They always put on such a fantastic show. I guess Ben Harper and Jerry Cantrell both sat in on a few songs in Wednesday's show. I get the impression they'll be touring for a long time so I'm sure they'll come around again.

I think this is going to be the first big dash update ever that has nothing that's worthwhile to me. To make things worse this will probably slow the dashboard and store down again too.

I feel for you. I'm not trying to rub it in but honestly the Netflix inclusion into the 360 is what I'd say is the biggest possible sell of the machine besides the fact it plays games.
I would take this over inclusion of Blu-Ray / HD DVD player ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.
I agree, get that shit settled and get Netflix on EVERY 360 no matter where people live.

Try living in Canada where you get exposed to US & UK culture, but get NO netflix, skyplayer or any extra features on the 360 dashboard....
We pay more for XBL & MS points and somehow get a lot less....

But I'm pretty certain that facebook isn't going to automatically broadcast whatever you're doing on you're 360, is that what you're suggesting?
I don't care, I'm with you, but I seem to be seeing quite a few people of the mind that facebook is going to tell the world whenever you're playing xbox.
I mean, it doesn't do that, right? Anyone? I thought not I guess...

I just assumed it would broadcast it like the default MSN messenger settings. Which were annoying as hell.

Of course not, no, that wasn't what I was suggesting. 360 facebook updates will surely be like Uncharted 2 twitter updates: http://www.consolemonster.com/images/news/uc2twit2.jpg
What I'm saying is: those who choose to update their facebook will help the 360 by advertising it indirectly. That's a good thing.

Well, that depends if one's boss is a gamer. Surprisingly, that is not always the case.

Is what he was referring too.
I don't often see them make corrections, even when they mess up on an in-network link. I guess most people ignore it or post the correct quote/spelling/link.etc,

Don't complain about ADDING features.. if you are not interested in the feature.. DON"T USE IT..
Would you prefer that Features are REMOVED.. or NOTHING added at all?
I don't understand why anyone would complain about new features that are not going to cost you anything..especially since you have the choice to not use them.

Agreed, Markez. It will always be a valid argument, so throw in your Microsoft branded earplugs if you don't like it. Just like those who are welcome to not use any features added to Xbox Live. You are welcome not to listen to those who don't agree with paying for such a service.

@ abelpc:
Well, I think the main consensus is that if you're putting resources on creating Facebook / Twitter implementation, those are resources that aren't available for creating something that people actually give a shit about.
Of course, that's assuming that resources are limited, which obviously isn't the case, right?
Just playing devil's advocate and providing an obvious answer but hey, you did ask and I was always told, "There's no such thing as a dumb question" (lucky for you).

@D Dogg
what features would you give a shit about then?
I don't really care about Facebook or Twitter.. but I am not going to complain about them being added.
I do look forward to last.fm.. I think that is cool. And Video chat will be interesting so I can chat with my family in the other part of the country.
I personally am indifferent about the additions but I am not going to say be upset about adding more.

Oh, if only Microsoft had made the Xbox emulation software useable for games other than Halo instead of worrying about this.

Yeah, but imagine if only you understood that getting old games (that squeezed every bit of performance out of the aging hardware they originally ran on) to work on a different processor and graphics chip set is far more complex than writing a Twitter client.

And imagine if the company responsible is already familiar with programming emulators to make older programs run with their software. Not to mention they had a triple-core CPU, a much more powerful GPU, and eight times the RAM to play around with...yeah, you're right. Impossible.

But yet, even with all that power, they don't fully handle emulation. Hey, I'd love it too if full emulation had happened. But do you really think that if it was as easy as making a Twitter client, MS would just stop short of emulating all of those gems you want to play? No. It's not like they just cranked up the power of the xBox from 6 to 10 when they made the 360. Different machines with the evolutions of the 360 being focused on slightly different powers. Later games in a console's life often use the outer fringes of programming tricks and loopholes that are specific to that hardware, in this discussion the xBox, squeezing the best out of that old hardware that they know inside and out, as well as using graphics chipsets that might not be legal to emulate with software as they broke ties with Nvidia when they went with ATI for the 360.
Switching from the older machines to the new next gen is obviously going to give companies like Sony and MS more power, but with the 360 and the PS3, it's still not enough to emulate chips that are not physically there. I offer up the inability for the PS3 to properly emulate the PS2 games that it could when it actually had the chips from the PS2, and I remember when an xBox game like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was finally supported - the higher resolution was cool but it also ran slower in parts like the rain on the outside scenes. The emulated game ran slower than the game on the xBox and certain graphics tricks used on the xBox (like the 'optical camo' in SC:CT multiplayer) showed up as glitches on the 360.
C'mon son. Think it through. Take your *faceplam* cliché and leave it at the door - the 360 and the PS3 are powerful, but still not powerful enough to fully and correctly emulate last gen's games with only software.
