Though Microsoft has been a bit cagey with a solid release date for the upcoming Facebok/Twitter/Last.Fm update for Xbox Live, eagle-eyed UK readers have spotted the phrase "Service launches 17th November 2009" on the UK Xbox website (seen above).
When we recently got to give the services a spin at Microsoft's First Annual Open House, the company wouldn't give us a set-in-stone release date, though MTV Multiplayer were told a public beta for the services would arrive for XBL Gold Members in the "middle-towards-end of October." We've contacted Microsoft for word on when the services will be arriving on this side of the pond, though ... well ... it's the weekend. We'd suggest you don't go holding your breath for that info until Monday.
[Thanks, Scump!]

Microsoft seeks new lows. Is this better or worse than RRoD?
Posted: Oct 10th 2009 2:15PM (Unverified) said
Judging from past updates, it will probably cause RRoD for a number of consoles.

I'm pretty sure you're all missing the point. This update isn't for us. It's for the 90% of people who own 360's who aren't us. The normal people.

Ah. So how would you classify someone who falls into the third deviation? Super Abnormal?

I have considered those people with spare time that either spend it on gaming or social networking focus on one or the other. I tend stay away from things online that eat into my gaming time. Aside from gaming blogs and forums every now and then.
A feature some might actually want is YouTube, and an ability to video capture in-game and upload from within said game. Holler when you hear confirmation on that, because that would have more impact than achievements did. Imagine the possibilities.

There have been leaked reports of an integrated dashboard system that would allow you to record movie clips directly, without the game needing to support the feature. Similar to how the 360 handles custom soundtracks.
But there was no mention of whether or not they could be uploaded anywhere. If you could upload them directly to Youtube, imagine the amount of spam they'd get.

It's possible Bungie may implement a system akin to what you're looking for in Reach, seeing as that's the logical progression from Saved Films in Halo 3.

I'm more interested in Last.fm, and has there still be no more information about the Sky services coming? That something I really cared about..

I wish it was Pandora. I just like the interface more, and the music exploration thing. If PS3 gets Pandora, I'd use that more.

UK and Ireland only are supposed to get the service, as Sky is restricted to these regions. It's essentially Sky Player but through broadband. http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/skyplayer/

I use both, but since getting my new phone (Nokia 5800) I have no reason to use this update.
Spotify would also be much better than Last.FM.

Yeah, what a pointless update. I mean, what kind of dope places any value in entertainment beyond playing games? I certainly can't imagine why someone would want to listen to Last.fm on the best speakers in his house during the time he's just relaxing at home and not playing any games.
As for Facebook Connect, pfft. Why would I want to upload my gameplay video games and screenshots to my Facebook profile automatically from my 360 console?
Yep, this sure is a pointless update, guys.

"from Xbox Live" is already starting to show up on tweets.

I have access to the beta at the moment... however it is entirely useless because Microsoft has decided to block out almost half of their users who are more likely to use Facebook and Twitter by compleatly locking out under-18 accounts.
In the information tab for the beta, there is this information on it.
"Are child accounts supported?
If you are using an Xbox LIVE account under the age of 18, you will not bee able to use the Last.fm, Twitter or Facebook applications. At launch, parents won't have the ability to enable these applications for their children."
WTF? If parents are concerned just allow the features to be removed from the child account, but don't fucking remove it!?
