Scivelation announced (but hard to pronounce)
If you were listening to this post being read on the non-existent "Joystiq Posts on Cassette" series, you'd probably hear us have a bit of trouble. The press release which we recently received announcing the TopWare Interactive and Black Wing Foundation-developed third-person shooter Scivelation included a number of details about the title, but sadly, no audible pronunciation guide. For the record, we're going with "Siv-uh-lay-shun."
The title features a generic-ish plot dealing with evil dictatorships and stalwart resistance movements in a dystopian future -- we've chosen to turn to the portfolios of the title's creators for more insight into its quality. Black Wing Foundation made Stalin vs. The Martians, which is completely magical. TopWare worked on X-Blades, which committed violent crimes against our intellegence. We expect Scivelation to fall somewhere in between.

"Scivelation" is probably a typo like "Joystiq".
Scivelation = Civilization? Shiv elation?
:/

anyone notice that the shield in the title logo looks like a crusader symbol/shield and that the cross is similiar to the red lights in the one screen shot?
this like a religious type meaning to it? Graphics wise it looks good but other then that it looks generic.
kojo87 @ Oct 11th 2009 5:31PM
it looks like it wants to be Gears of War
BlaqueBeird @ Oct 11th 2009 6:11PM
What shooter isn't "generic" (for the record that term needs to die)? If there are guns, explosions, and things to shoot, it's generic, by your standards. What do you want? RPG elements? A gripping story? Some sort of strategy? None of those things are in an FPS, because then it's not an FPS. You're like the people complaining about another generic action movie, or the music geeks that say everything's been done before. Elitist geeks who think they know everything (and are usually children who have no idea how the world works) need to die. In a fire. Or of herpes. Or both, if possible.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington] @ Oct 11th 2009 6:25PM
Deus Ex had all three of your forbidden FPS elements.
MRLN (The Comment God) @ Oct 11th 2009 6:40PM
Elitist geek children can't die of herpes, there's no one to give it to them.
BlaqueBeird @ Oct 11th 2009 6:42PM
It's not an FPS. it's a First Person RPG. That's what I'm saying. The definition of what's a shooter is more restricted than you think. What I'm saying is FPSes are just shooters. so of course they're all going to be the game. They're shooters. The fun of a shooter isn't the extra stuff, like levelling up or giving a shit about the characters. It's about explosions, cool effects, and the neat weapon ideas/variations. They're simple. The people that complain about it is the same as complaining that every RPG is generic because they all use levels and experience.

The guy's getup also has that same pattern used on the nano-suit in Crysis. Methinks they couldn't come up with any original ideas so they pieced together what has already been done...

But, part the very soul of the gaming experience is innovation. So what if the sub-genre of FPS borrows elements from other genres, as long as the final product is fun and taken as a whole a unique experience. Some of the best and most enjoyable action movies, that have stood up as classics, borrowed heavily from drama, comedy, and so forth.
Stealing from one is plagiarism; stealing from some is research; stealing from many is genius-(one of my professors quoting someone whom I'm don't remember)

That game so looks like its on the UE3. Its graphical style is pretty much exactly the same as UT3
Darkdrium777 @ Oct 11th 2009 5:10PM
Yay for more realistic colours.
Avatar @ Oct 11th 2009 6:26PM
More games than you think were made on the UE3. From Gears of War to Roboblitz, Arkham Asylum to Mass Effect. It's everywhere, and it's sweet.
DreamingDarklyRobin @ Oct 11th 2009 4:14PM
This is going to be amazing, much better than all the titles I was going to play.
Sarcasm?

I like the "sketched" look of the gun icon.

Imma go with "sky-vuh-'lay-tee-an"

Am I the only one who thought "shadow complex" at first glance?
DRCD1 @ Oct 11th 2009 4:58PM
No you are not. That person looks a lot like the guy from shadow complex fully dressed (the one in one of the 1st screenshots) .
Sa1ntPat @ Oct 11th 2009 6:50PM
He's more than likely voiced by Nolan North as well.

Related at all to the game "Salvation"?

Intellegence? Really?
Exemplar @ Oct 11th 2009 4:49PM
"scivelation" sounds like the lysdexic and drainbramaged spelling of "civilization".
It all makes sense now. X-Blades must have melted the developer's brains with its sheer stupidity.
Sly @ Oct 11th 2009 5:20PM
but where's the Z?!

it's the drainbramage, you see.

I seriously feel a huge amount of disinterest with this game.
Richard 2.6 @ Oct 11th 2009 5:23PM
Maybe Gears of War and such have skewed my view on such things, but that guy in the screenshot has really skinny arms, especially when considering the girth of his torso and the armor he's wearing.
CheeziePotato (PSN: talic10 | XBL: InfiniteMovie) @ Oct 11th 2009 5:37PM
This game has potential, I guess. It looks like it may have some deep story or something. I think it'll turn out to be a good game.
CheeziePotato (PSN: talic10 | XBL: InfiniteMovie) @ Oct 11th 2009 6:58PM
...but I could be wrong.
Kattleox @ Oct 11th 2009 6:04PM
Is it a sequel to the Japanese digdug spin off, Shovelation?
d3athcr4ft @ Oct 11th 2009 6:23PM
Seems to me the name is a combination of 'Science' and 'Revelation', so that would make its pronunciation "si-vell-a-shun". Now we just need to decide whether or not this is a stupid name... lol
aroCOMMENT @ Oct 11th 2009 6:25PM
SCIence + reVELATION
Sy-vah-lay-shun

I think this is it....it will be like a doomsday final battle between Jesus and robots.

Personally, this looks more promising than Quantum Theory. I can't wait until some gameplay is shown.
zaglis @ Oct 12th 2009 5:05AM
So... its running on UE3, rght?
JohnHeist @ Oct 12th 2009 11:25AM
Am I the only one who's seeing the "SCI" as in Science?
It's a portmanteau of Science/scientific and revelation.
CJLopez @ Oct 12th 2009 1:47PM
i'll keep this under my radar, but quantum theory is up to fill my GoW on my ps3 needs already
