Sony Online Entertainment could go all the way crazy and officially announce that it's working on the sequel to the popular MMOFPS PlanetSide, but why bother? No, SOE would much rather release a survey mentioning the sequel, only to be called "PlanetSide Next" by company prez John Smedley a few weeks later on his LiveJournal (has it really come to this, folks?).
Though few details are given, Smedley takes the time to thoroughly declare his love for the series, and in doing so speaks of SOE's intentions with PlanetSide Next. "To me, PlanetSide Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in PlanetSide and make it a lot better ... massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch ... none of this 64-player stuff ... REALLY MASSIVE." We're just hoping our measly laptops will be able to handle the game's sheer massiveness.
[Thanks, Hamma!]

I truly hope they make it how Planetside originally was. Before they screwed it up so bad. I had an excessive amount of fun playing that game. Nothing was as cool as logging in and taking a shuttle and dropping into an area where shit was going down.
Can't wait for more info on it.

PlanetSide Next? Sounds like an expansion. How about PlanetSide 2?

The Current Planetside already does that.. There is still a large active base of players and you can get into a big battle at any given time... there are issues that need resolved like balancing and hackers but no game touches Planetside when it comes to amount of players in a battle.. 64 players total? How about 64 on average for Each of the 3 SIDES.

I remember: after the beta the population dropped like a brick to the point where you couldn't form squads with enough people anymore. HART drops without a team sucks (well, all MMOs suck without other humans).
Then they fucked it up some more with the really, really, really bad expansions that further unbalanced the game.
Planetside had some serious potential - but at no point was it worth the full $15US/month entry price. It was also much more susceptible to critical mass issues than any other MMO (i.e., without a minimum mass of people the game simply wasn't fun). Instead of building a large player base, Sony decided to stick their head up their ass, price the game out of reach of most of its demographic, and let the population dwindle.

I regret never having had played this game, but I don't think this sequel will be worth checking out. SOE lately has been trying to emulate WoW, badly. They had good games in the past, but not anymore.

PlanetSide's fundamental flaw is and always has been that it's a game about a war that can't be won. Every "victory" feels hollow, so the game gets old very quickly. Unless they implement some sort of meaningful win scenario, it won't matter what else they do with the sequel.

LOL @ people comparing MAG to Planetside. You guys just don't know.
MAG is gonna be 256 people, split up into 8vs8 fighting, from what I know. I could be wrong.
Planetside at its peak...was 150vs150vs150 at any given time, in multiple locations. that's 3 factions of 150 people fighting each other all at the same time, in the same location.
Platoons of 30 people air-dropping on top of a base out of multiple Galaxies(think C-130, but airplanes), with 15 people defending the fully-mined roof, 50 more inside the base building itself, 30-50 on the ground outside the base fighting off the main attack force which is attacking the main gate with everything they've got, 10 snipers on the hill trading shots with snipers on the Base Walls, Infiltrators trying to sneak into the base to hack the Vehicle terms, and the Control Console, amidst all the craziness. Reavers doing missile runs over the base, Liberators dropping bombs and avoiding Anti-Air fire from AA MAX suits and Turrets.
All of which is happening at the same time, in the same area.
MAG is only a taste of what Planetside used to be.
MAG is a FPS.
Planetside was a War Game.
What killed Planetside was that stupid Core Combat expansion, and the utterly retarded BFR fake Gundam Mechs. both of those served to effectively kill the population of the game, by making a good portion of what made the game so fun(outdoor Infantry fighting supported by Vehicles) pretty much useless.
but prior to it, it was the best MMO experience I've had. and I've played just about everything, MMO-wise.
I'm definitely looking out for Planetside 2.

Actually theres no 8vs8 thing ing in MAG its just that their are squads of 8 and you'll probably have a rival squad with the objectives to stop you, but all the players are on the same map and can fight each other. However I agree that planetside was much larger and hectic and the 2 games shouldn't be compared.

F'ING THIS.
I've been playing MAG beta for about a month now, and it is a great game. It's 256 players split up onto two sides of the map, so 64vs64 for the most part. There are 8 squads in each platoon, so that's probably where you got the 8v8 figure from.
Anyways, although MAG is fun, it didn't touch the sheer epicness that I enjoyed during the Planetside beta. Insane firefights indoors, pushing to reach the door consoles and hack them, screwing around with equipment and vehicle terminals. Of course there were some nitpicks, like MAXes camping the spawn tubes. But the game was seriously astounding. The teammwork and coordination in an outfit and squad were great as well.
I think the main problem was with how SOE handled complaints. The dev team would literally give into every single whiner's demands. The Jackhammer was nerfed. The Lasher was buffed. The Lasher was nerfed. I think almost every single weapon was changed at least once due to the vocal few, even the Vanu glowstick.
And don't get me started with the CC and BFR expansions.
However, I still have good memories and high hopes for this Planetside sequel. If it can accomplish 1/5 of what the original did at its peak, it will be a huge hit.

Just posting in agreement. Planetside before the drastic game breaking changes was one of the most fun video gaming experiences I've ever had; Me and my friends still remissness about our time playing it.
That said, SoE has a talent in breaking every mmo they touch. They did the same thing to SW Galaxies as they did to Planetside. I highly doubt I'll ever trust SoE with a monthly payment again, knowing that game breaking changes are likely just around the corner.

I haven't played this game in forever, and _still_ think "VVM" when someone's in my way (For those that never played, VVM was the key sequence to the voice macro corresponding to "Excuse me, could you move?" or similar depending on your voice set) as well as VWA and friends in movies and TV shows ("Inbound enemy aircraft!"). Whenever my family encounters an underpowered energy pistol in a video game, we call it the beamer. Planetside has become ingrained in my family, and it will be a very long time before we forget it.
There are 2 MMO factions I identify myself as: Horde and Vanu Sovereignty.
Technology = Might!
Vanu Sovereignty forever!

This was the first fps mmo i ever played. i started when i was 10 and now i am 16. i always play games expecting them to be like planetside but am always found them to be a waste of time when i look at them now. i still have withdrawls from planetside and wish that they would make it free to play now seeing as the population would increase and they would make money off of people just buying the game. this was the most awsome game i ever played and i am more than willing to try a planetside next, or planetside 2
