With Bayonetta out in Japan on October 29, Sega is beginning to market the game aggressively with (of course) the downloadable demo, but also a new Japanese TV commercial (after the break) featuring the debut of the theme, "Something Missing" by MiChi. Will the Japanese audience respond to a woman in an undulating hair suit fighting demons? Brief footage of a real model dressed as Bayonetta couldn't hurt, though the crowd at Tokyo Game Show suggested the game doesn't really need help drawing attention.
Meanwhile, Platinum Games may be trying to divert some of that attention toward Sega. Not only does the (slightly less visually appealing) PS3 demo include a "Converted by Sega" screen in the introduction, Famitsu's infobox for the game was updated in the last issue to include "PS3 port developer: Sega." Either Platinum asked for those notices, or Sega's really proud of the work it's done.
It's not a Sega game, so they have nothing to be proud of. Unless you count the crappy PS3 port as "something to be proud of". It's not "Ghostbusters Crappy" but after playing the PS3 demo... I am definately picking up the XBox version.
Well Winterfang, Platinum Games handled the 360 version and left the ps3 port to Sega. Sega unfortunately failed to get the game on the same level as the 360, which sucks for me because I only own a ps3... I mean I'll probably still buy it, but it graphics and framerate are lacking, as compared to the 360 version. The framerate being the big problem...
@Winterfang: That's generally because the developer makes the actual game. Yes, publishers are important, but they aren't the main factor in the quality of the game.
Yup, seeing how God of War 3 will be coming out 2 months later. Not to mention MAG that same month or GT5. But who knows maybe Kratos as ceased to be completely badass.
That's what I thought until I saw the part where she puts the lollipop in her mouth. Facial animation isn't THAT advanced. I'd be willing to bet that they filmed a live actress and then pulled a "fashion magazine photoshop" job on her.
The 360 version must be amazing because I enjoyed the PS3 demo...Or there must be some new trend where people play games looking through magnifing glasses.
Wasn't planning on getting a 360 game this holiday this might just be it.
The Xbox 360 version "pop's" more. it's more vibrant and the textures are clearer. also the PS3 version is missing some visual effects. The game has time before release for Sega+PS3 to play catchup before release though.
I don't really know what all the fuss is about the PS3 version being so much uglier. I have seen both (although I have only played through the PS3 version) and the only difference i could see was that the textures were marginally more fuzzy on the PS3 version, although they would clear up after a few seconds, Mass Effect style.
I think Sega did a pretty decent job with the conversion. I think we have passed the era of EAs Orange Box conversion.
Exactly, this nitpicking is really just fanboy fodder. Besides, AAA exclusives are set to hit early next year: God of War 3, MAG, and GT5 are coming out for the PS3. I doubt PS3 owners are going to care if the PS3 version of Bayonetta is slightly blurrier, seeing how they'll probably play those games more.
That is not to down play this game, it looks crazy. Still.... God of War 3.
Hrm, thanks Giroro. I hadn't really been following this issue (the marketing for Bayonetta's been a little too "hormonal teen" for an old guy like me to maintain interest) but the differences in that shot alone are surprising. I wouldn't be surprised if Platinum is the one requiring the Sega branding to be mentioned constantly in context with the PS3 release.
It's kind of funny, because back in the day when I saw competing console comparisons of the same game, it just felt like an electronic dick-measuring contest. Now that I've got enough disposable income to fit all the consoles under one media center, I actually find these comparisons useful for avoiding sub-par ports.
My thought on "which version is better" has come down to this - if I can tell the differences between the PS3 and 360 version by looking at a few screen shots or watching a few seconds of video (i.e., Ghostbusters), then, yes, I'd say if you own both systems, pick it up for the one that looks better.
However, if the only way you can tell the difference is by counting frames or by extremely zoomed in screen shots, then there's no real world difference. Buy it for whichever system you prefer the controller for.
Plus, 5 years from now, will it really matter if your version is slightly blurrier or loading times were 5 seconds longer? If it does, well, then your life is pretty sad...
Sounds like Bayonetta falls under the first category then - like Ghostbusters, I'll be getting this for 360.
My point is you see some web sites that declare "PS3 / 360 is the best because all games look so much better!" when, in reality, the shadow of a rock in the far distance is slightly more defined on one system than the other. And, even then, there's been multiple cases when those comparison sites miss things that actually make me feel the other way. (For example, some sites have said that CoD W@W looks better on 360 because the textures are better, but I think the PS3 version is better because there's less popup and frame dropping than on 360.)
I have played both demos, and they both play fine, but what does that have to do with the commercial? JC loves to mention anything even remotely negative about SEGA at any chance it seems.
The Xbox 360 version was in development for just over two years, while the PlayStation 3 version did not even exist at the time of E3 2009. If anything it is a massive achievement that SEGA could even get the game playable on a completely different platform with only about four months to work on an engine that was built specifically for the Xbox 360 in the first place.
And they are not demons, they are angels. I figured the fact that they have feathered wings, have halos, fly down from the clouds, how flowers grow when they appear and how the multiple trailers the game has had now have mentioned that they are angels would have given that away.
