Miyamoto expects sustained sales for New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Nintendo's resident gaming legend, Shigeru Miyamoto, foresees long-term -- nay, long-tail -- sales for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a prospect that isn't completely insane when you take a few things into account:
[Via andriasang]
- The game has Mario in it.
- Its DS counterpart is the second highest-selling DS game of all time and has sold consistently since its release in 2006.
- It's super fun.

Ya, I think it is safe to say Nintendo will sell a few copies of this.

You forgot the /obvious/ tag, Shiggy.
formersegaguy @ Oct 12th 2009 10:12PM
The ignorance of video games is annoying, but the ignorance of modern art is downright galling
formersegaguy @ Oct 12th 2009 10:13PM
Ugh. Comment system. Damn.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 12th 2009 6:36PM
It's slightly infuriating that Mario Bros is going to sell better than L4D 2, Modern Warfare, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, and pretty much every other game coming out in the next few months. It's like modern art; YOU know it's paint thrown at a wall, but CRAZY people think it's the best thing since ever.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 12th 2009 6:41PM
Edit: Contrary to how that may sound, I don't hate Mario Bros or the Wii. I just realize how much effort went into making a 2D sidescroller like this, and how much went into Modern Warfare 2. (Hint: Not equal amounts.)
J-Link @ Oct 12th 2009 6:46PM
Modern Warfare will still a shitload though, I would be more worried about Bayonetta.
Donald @ Oct 12th 2009 6:53PM
Considering this is the first 2D sidescroller to star Mario since the first Bush administration, I'm glad this is going to outsell CoD 6: The Search For Bobby Kotick's Soul.
Donald @ Oct 12th 2009 6:54PM
*2D sidescroller on a console
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 12th 2009 6:55PM
I'd be worried about Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, and Alpha Protocol all being passed on because of all the AAA titles coming out.
Spartan [Planeteer | Power of Sunshine & Lollipops] @ Oct 12th 2009 6:56PM
As much as I love L4D and CoD,
not everyone is into zombies and terrorists.
Mario has more mainstream appeal.
J-Link @ Oct 12th 2009 6:57PM
Bayonetta especiall since its made by Platinum games, and their games havent exactly sold like blockbusters.
sony boy (6 years til sony man child!) @ Oct 12th 2009 7:00PM
this should've been a 20 dollar downloadable title.
Ben @ Oct 12th 2009 7:53PM
L4D2 should have been a $20 download title...
Mr Khan @ Oct 12th 2009 9:39PM
...that's what the boycott is about, anyway
josh @ Oct 12th 2009 10:02PM
This comment is ignorant on a couple of levels, but the obvious retort is that while people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy mario games, very few parents will be giving their young kids MW2 or L4D2. Very few seniors would be able to handle the complex mechanics of ME2 or have an interest in the gun feet and hair attacks of Bayonetta. Yet all of these groups can appreciate and play Mario Bros.
This is the same reason why movies like Ice Age or Night at the Museum do better at the box office than edgier movies.
That's life. Not everyone is interested in the exact same things as you. Get used to it.
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Oct 13th 2009 12:39AM
Are you suggesting that MW2 and L4D2 are fine art..?
OnToGloryReturns @ Oct 13th 2009 12:52AM
Have to rebuke a bit there pal. Just because a game is a 2d sidescroller does not mean that it is 'easier' to make than a top tier 3d shooter. On a technical level, yes, something like MW2 may be more complicated. But on a conceptual level - especially the 2d Mario platformers which are the defacto standard, that high level of quality is not easy.
Level design, variety, pacing, balance, control. All those things in a 2D platformer are very difficuly to pull of properly, not to mention at the level Nintendo does it.
Just because it hasn't got snazzy textures and a high tech engine does not make a game easier to develop. It's a different kind of challenge but not necessarily an easier one. That's why the Mario platformers generally stand heads and shoulders above games in the same genre (and why they sell so well for so long) and why the work that IW does stands out on the crowded FPS genre.
HeXeN @ Oct 12th 2009 6:37PM
Option one alone will make it sell milllllllllllions.
[ArchiGamer] [KNOWN TO CAUSE INSANITY IN LABORATORY RATS] @ Oct 12th 2009 6:38PM
I want to say 'duh' but that seems too redundant.
bongoes is no longer a Black Lantern. @ Oct 12th 2009 9:29PM
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to sell a lot, sounds redundant.
iamnotafish @ Oct 12th 2009 6:52PM
Does this play like LittleBigPlanet? The side-scrolling-ness makes me think it might?
GoldN @ Oct 12th 2009 7:10PM
Um, what? Have you never played a 2D Mario game? 2D platformers are a genre... so, other than that, there is very little connection to LBP... I don't even know where to begin to explain... how long have you been playing video games? There is so much about your post that confuses me...
Cypher @ Oct 12th 2009 7:12PM
You just asked if a Mario 2-D platformer plays like LittleBigPlanet.
Honestly, it should be the other way around.
Sly @ Oct 12th 2009 7:31PM
i think he's referring to the 4 player co-op.
Ben @ Oct 12th 2009 7:42PM
Something makes me thing he's referring to the "side-scrolling-ness", not the 2D graphics.
Ben @ Oct 12th 2009 7:43PM
... Or 4 player co-op.
RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Oct 12th 2009 8:14PM
Side scrollingness? Again with the Mario! What have you guys been doing?
iamnotafish @ Oct 12th 2009 9:14PM
Meant to reply to myself, didn't. Surprised by the negativity and downvoting, but I guess that's to be expected.
As Sly said, I was referring to the co-op aspect. The 2D part was self-explanatory, but I was wondering about the ramifications of having 4 players on screen at once i.e could you take out another guy with a poorly aimed shell, could you distract an enemy while someone else got behind him etc etc.
Mr Khan @ Oct 12th 2009 9:41PM
2D Mario enemies generally don't have AI of any kind, so it certainly wouldn't work like that
But yes, cooperative mayhem is generally the point.
Clavius @ Oct 12th 2009 6:52PM
If advertised correctly this game will sell kajillions lol. I can see family's who don't own a Wii buying the system just to relive their childhood with their own children.
Spartan [Planeteer | Power of Sunshine & Lollipops] @ Oct 12th 2009 6:57PM
Also, can someone give me a link to this whole
Bobby Kotick thing.

You should have a look at these, for no other reason than that they feature Mario and are damn funny. ;)

I'm buying it SOLELY because it has Mario in it, NOT because the DS game sold so well...
...also, I can through my "friends" into pits. THAT'LL SHOW 'EM! :)
INNUENDO 64 @ Oct 12th 2009 7:24PM
This will be more proof that even after 25 years, sidescrolling Mario platformers still sell like hotcakes. Im buying it because that's what it is.

I'll be getting it. It seems like the kind of game where we'd spend hours on the one level because we keep killing eachother before the finish
Platy @ Oct 12th 2009 8:14PM
Even people who don't even want to own a wii must buy this game just because it is the first sidescrolling for consoles with mario on the title since super mario world !!!
Mr Mobius - the wandering artist @ Oct 12th 2009 8:16PM
It has Mario in it in a pure platformer so I'm sure I'll get it. I'd have liked a DS sequel instead but I'll reserve judgement until I need to give it.
WREturns @ Oct 12th 2009 8:24PM
I'm buying it day one at midnight and all that shit, but I was really hoping that they were going to announce SMB4. It would've been so awesome if they were like, "And guess what, bitches?! We have all the suits that have been in every Mario game ever and 30 ALL NEW ONES!!!!"
Platy @ Oct 12th 2009 9:46PM
It only needs the Cape , the Shoe, Fireflower and the Star ...and maybe the Blue Shell one just for the fun =3
WREturns @ Oct 12th 2009 10:43PM
But I also want the Frog, Tanooki, Hammer Bros., Metal Mario, etc. I want them all.

Of course it's going to have sustained sales, it's a Mario game on the Wii, where the majority of the audience doesn't follow when new games release.
Two years from now you'll be able to walk into Wal-mart and see some mom point to this game and say "hey look, there's a new Mario game for the Wii!" as if it came out the day before.
Ozzman_79 @ Oct 12th 2009 9:18PM
Did you know that lemons are also bitter?
Vcize @ Oct 12th 2009 9:35PM
I'm not being a smartass here, there's a reason why big games on other platforms sell like hot-cakes right away and then dramatically drop off, whereas big games on the Wii don't sell as big right away but hold on better over time.
It's a legitimate reason. Less casual gamers on the other consoles means more people that are aware of the big game releases and buy them up right away, and more casual gamers on the Wii means more people that don't know when new games release and just see them in the stores whenever they see them.
It's not a bad thing, it's just reality.
