Review: Demon's Souls

From Software's dungeon crawler comes from some sick, demented alternate plane of existence, where arcades are thriving and popping quarters into your console is how publisher Atlus recoups the costs of the game. It's a reality where Diablo was a tremendous flop because gamers have accepted masochism as the only measure for a game's quality. Demon's Souls is your leather-clad mistress and -- the worst part -- if you can withstand the pain for almost eight hours, you may, in what can only be described as a horrifying epiphany ... begin to enjoy it.
Gallery: Demon's Souls
I hate myself for liking Demon's Souls. Each sprawling level is full of enemies jumping from corners and challenges that will have boulders plummeting down stairs, the floor breaking out from under you at the most inopportune moments and enemies that will end you with one hit if your timing is even the slightest bit off. It's a gauntlet of experiences with a difficulty curve that maintains the incline of a sheer cliff.
I pity anyone that was in the room during the first hours I spent playing the game. I railed against its lack of direction, its clumsy inventory system, the presumptive nature of the character stats -- don't even try to talk to me about its (almost controller-snappingly difficult) parry and riposte timing. As someone who's been playing video games for the better part of his life, I could have sworn Demon's Souls' numerous, poor design choices were rectified or exterminated years ago in past games.
Even as I write this, I can't tell you if Demon's Souls deserves the high critical marks it's been receiving. It's like rewarding the most disgusting kind of elitism; imagine if Guitar Hero actually required you to play a real guitar to take part in the game. I've accepted that I'm not having what would normally be classified as "fun" with Demon's Souls. I'm having an experience. It's an escapade that builds up so much tension that when those rare moments of success occur, it's as if the defeated monster was made corporeal and I was given the opportunity to beat it in its lifeless face with a shovel a couple extra times, dig a hole, bury it and dance on its grave!
At some point, though, Demon's Souls does click and becomes an adventure that feels like it'll be worth pushing through. It may happen in the first hour, or it may happen after six, embarrassing hours, as you question why you're still playing. But, at some point, the urge to press on will take hold -- that is, if your anti-masochistic side hasn't already won and mercifully forced you to snap the disc in half.
With time and experience, you'll start finding an uneasy balance while attempting the different realms within Demon's Souls. For the greater good, maybe team up with another player in the game's online co-op or leave words of warning for other online travelers with the in-game note system. Eventually, a sixth sense will develop for that invisible point in a dungeon where you know it's time to go back; a recognition built upon innumerable deaths that it's time to cash in those souls you've collected, and then hop back into the fray.
Recognizing your own skill and limits within Demon's Souls, then picking those proper moments to upgrade your skills, is probably the only piece of advice I should relay for playing the game. Giving any more details or description will diminish the experience of being dropped into a game where you'll have very little idea of what to do next, not to mention, deprive you of those first hours of the game where you'll question if Demon's Souls is just a cruel joke on the modern gaming experience.

This review sucks
lepijaki @ Oct 12th 2009 5:35PM
terrible review........this ps3 hating bullshit is geting extreamly anoying.......
Slaziman @ Oct 12th 2009 5:40PM
It was a favorable review in the end moron, jeezus just because he didn't jizz all over the game it's PS3 hating?
It's just this bloggers opinion anyway, no need to take it like a personal offense.
Xoonaka @ Oct 12th 2009 5:41PM
This is not hating. This is so so true of this game.
It's hard, unforgiving, and god damn you'd think a game like this wouldn't exist nowadays. It took me 7 hours to defeat the first boss and get 1 trophy. That's insane in today's age.
But it's so much fun. So addicting. I'm angry and loving it. That's basically what this review tries to sum up. Atlus continues it's meteoric rise as one of my favorite publishers.
Heavytoka @ Oct 12th 2009 5:41PM
There was no PS3 hating in that review!
MrAlex @ Oct 12th 2009 5:42PM
I don't really see much hating...
But repeating that a game is so hard but also really addictive numerous times isn't really a review.
dabamf @ Oct 12th 2009 6:02PM
I don't see the hatred in the review...only in your comment.
Levi @ Oct 12th 2009 6:33PM
it's saying the game is hard but good, so if you're one of those pansy new school gamers who can't take a difficult game and thus, fund the extremely shallow difficulty trend of this generation, I wish negative things on your family.
Not only am I surprised that a game this tough came out in this day and age, I'm GLAD. We need more tough games!! Hopefully the Halo generation is starting to callous up a bit, so this masochism-infused addicting gameplay gets more attention.
My avatar should be testament that there are some of use that like tough games... Google "IWBTG" if you think Demon's Souls is hard!
abelpc @ Oct 12th 2009 6:38PM
The Reviewer Speaketh the truth, The weak minded Fanboy should not cry about the truth.. Game is Hard but Awesome..I love the game.. but I have had a few moments where I almost thru my controller through my window. I have great enjoyment in clicking the blood stains to see how someone died in a humorous stupid fashion..
I would give this game a 9 out of 10 .. not quite perfect because of the quirky target lockon system not always cooperating.
Phizzy @ Oct 12th 2009 7:22PM
Levi, that game isn't hard, it's just a memory exercise.
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Oct 12th 2009 8:11PM
Levi, my two most epic gaming accomplishments are finishing Smash TV without losing a life and beating IWBTG on the hardest difficulty. If I wasn't so macho, I would of cryed.
phinnvr6 @ Oct 12th 2009 10:23PM
This game is awesome... One of the best RPGs of this console generation and another great PS3 exclusive. Metacritic is showing a 90/100 and that's definitely about right.
CheeziePotato [Has finally become a Super Saiyan] @ Oct 13th 2009 7:41AM
I love this game so much. We need more hard games. I remember I was the only kid in school who beat Mike Tyson in Punch-out and Battletoads. It literally took me more than 200 times to beat him. Battletoads was the hardest game I have ever played, but I finally beat that game one day. We really need more hard games.
james_lankford @ Oct 13th 2009 9:43PM
where did he hate on the ps3 moron ?
Levi @ Oct 16th 2009 1:17AM
Phizzy, for the most part you're right, it is memory exercise, however there are still some really tough parts even after playing through it a few times, and it does start to get REALLY tough on Very Hard.
Also, Nathan, you beat it on impossible...? Or Very Hard? There is one guy, tijitdamijit, that claims to have beaten it on impossible, capturing the last area of the game showing no save points. But yeah, beating Father The Guy is pretty much the best moment in gaming. for those that have done it.
edensoto @ Oct 12th 2009 5:36PM
This game simply put, is amazing. I was somewhat interested in it before it came out, but the way I feel about it now? I pretty much forgot Uncharted 2 is coming out tomorrow. Once you start to understand this game and how its supposed to be played, it will satisfy like no other game. Its really one of the best games I've had the privilege of playing.
rocksox901 @ Oct 12th 2009 5:39PM
It's nice when people don't just spew hate and put reason behind their arguments.
PN04 @ Oct 12th 2009 6:10PM
While I agree that the review isnt hating on PS3 I do find that he's missing the point, the game was meant to be insanely hard because the whole point behind dying in the game is part of the experience, from death and loosing your body to leaving ethereal messages from beyond the grave to either trick people into dying or help them occasionally get past something with a warning. This isnt a game that was meant to be beating in an afternoon on a single life, it was meant to kill you, kill you often, and have a blood orgy with your corpse. In that they succeeded wonderfully.
If you have something against necrophilic rape then the game clearly isnt for you.
C.A. @ Oct 12th 2009 6:47PM
I agree completely. This game is a blast! We need more games that are a challenge. Old school games didn't hold your hand every step of the way and they were rewarding when you finally got them.
Demon's Souls is great because it is hard, but not in a cheap or cheating way. You have to be patient and careful. It's like G.R.A.W. or Rainbow Six of dungeon crawling. You are fighting freaking monsters, zombies, and demons! It shouldn't be a walk in the park.
I say that everyone gets Demon's Souls and conquers the challenge!
P.S. It's worth getting a bow and 200 arrows and killing the dragon that flies over the ramparts in the first level. You get around 18,000 souls and can go back to where the dragons are resting and get a purple flame shield.
mahouneko @ Oct 12th 2009 7:21PM
@C.A.:
Dood, that was supposed to be a secret! Oh well.
Residentevil72501 (PSN: rankore) @ Oct 12th 2009 8:34PM
I agree I have put over 40 hours into it in the last 4 days and I am level 80 and I still get owned cuz I get cocky, or stop paying attention. Also there are 792 levels in the game so getting there TAKES FOREVER. It is soooo adicting however, and it might be my favorite game of all time......seriously.
pbssbp @ Oct 12th 2009 9:16PM
I had absolutely no interest in this game until I read this particular review and comments like this. When I was a kid, if you "finished" pac-man, you were a god. Now any joker can finish just about any game they can buy. How did we get to the point where too hard to beat was a bad thing?
One of my all time favorite gaming experiences is "N". No way in heck I even came close to beating all the levels on that thing. But I had a completely awesome time trying.
Mr. Joe @ Oct 13th 2009 1:48AM
this game is absolutely fantastic. this review scratches the first five to ten hours of the game. i'm about twenty five hours in and i don't want to stop. dig deeper into the dungeons. find the goods. kill the demons. touch the maiden in black.
this game already feels like the first time i played through shadow of the colossus. you know it's epic as you're slowly unraveling its dressings.
fundando @ Oct 13th 2009 10:56PM
I haven't even opened my copy of Uncharted 2 I picked up today because this game is crack. I wonder what people have been playing on the 360?
James @ Oct 12th 2009 5:37PM
And I'm pretty much done reading this site

I'm sorry but when was it decided that a game taking skill and practice to complete was elitist?
Wayne Campbell @ Oct 12th 2009 7:13PM
Yeah. Last I checked, that was called playing video games.
...and it was fun.
doc j @ Oct 12th 2009 8:11PM
Remember Contra?
Psh. That game was so elitist.

It's out already but good luck finding a copy. It has sold out everywhere.
Finito (PSN: Wretched_Walrus) @ Oct 12th 2009 5:39PM
From what I hear it's not as hard as some people are saying You just need to play really cautiously and pay attention. Always play it safe, keep your shield up and probably concentrate on long-range stuff like magic and bow&arrow. Can't judge it myself until my import gets here. European gamers always suffer. :(
Xoonaka @ Oct 12th 2009 5:45PM
In my experience (as a Wanderer class), the shield is most certainly your friend. Ranged is only so useful, as the actual HARD enemies have shields and they use 'em too. I can't tell you how frustrated I was the first time a really hard enemy healed himself..... but I digress.
I'm on the second boss now, and he is hard. Maybe I do need to try more ranged, but my crossbow is so slow...
Overall though, this game is hard. Even with these tips, you'll still die. A lot. As I said previously, 7 hours to beat the first boss. A lot of that was replaying the level after a death and also from fighting an extra hard enemy I didn't realize you could skip.... but still.
Brent @ Oct 12th 2009 6:14PM
this. it's not really a CRAZY HARD OMG WTF? game. just take your time. I was enjoying it from the start, and I was a huge skeptic. the combat feels fantastic, and there's a sense of tension I haven't felt in a game in a long time. It's great. really great.
mahouneko @ Oct 12th 2009 6:14PM
I... cannot say that there is an easy class to use for the game. This game revolves entirely on forcing you to learn the environment (and its assorted enemies) and to adapt to them.
Pro-tip:
Always have your shield up. Not out, UP! Taking a vastly reduced damage from a surprise attack is much more preferable to receiving a critical hit.
Dropeti @ Oct 12th 2009 7:26PM
I platinum'ed the asian version and now I intend to do it again, and the major tip I can think of is:
Always have your "equip" stat (the one that determines how much weight you can have equipped) BELOW half, so this way you can walk and dodge A LOT faster with O.
For those who say "No need for it mate, I have strong magiczorx" good luck for you please share your experiences with us later.
Bastion6six6 @ Oct 12th 2009 5:41PM
Wow...just wow. You suck at the game, and thus deem it *horrible* with poor design choices? No wonder this site has horrible article after horrible article, its run by shitty journalists. Good job! -.-
Reuben @ Oct 12th 2009 5:43PM
Not everyone enjoys getting pummeled in a video game for 8 hours.
MrAlex @ Oct 12th 2009 5:43PM
What? He loves the game.
