Agreed. This article is NOT hating on PS3. The game REALLY is THAT hard. I'm not a big RPG fan , but this game truly is special. The obsenities that come from my lips should never be heard by another person, but as this reviewer explained, the reward is truly orgasmic.

What don't you get? It's about the quality of the review, not that he might not have totally loved the game.

Look at my post on page 3, it's a poor review. He mentions flaws and problems without explaining them throughout the review. It's a weasel worded review. Is it too much to ask for him to explain these flaws in the game?

I love how you are calling people who are just asking for a decent review fanboys, yet here you are posting multiple times seemingly personally offended that people are complaining about a god awful review on this site.

I'm personally offended because I was quite satified with both the game and the review; it was short and too the point. Need more? Go watch videos on Game Trailers, it's better than reading a giant review.

Speaking as someone who imported the Korean version at the start of the year and has played it to the point of getting the platinum trophy, who loved it so much he was willing to wade through pages of text to translate it and understand the game i can say i have nothing but respect for it.

I feel its unfair the reviewer comments on "poor design decisions" he has missed the point entirely, each decision was taken with the utmost thought and respect. Games have become more forgiving over the more recent years and especially in the US many games have their difficulty level drummed down further in order to appeal to the masses. In the Jap and UK we tend to have a much more masochistic approach to games, and certainly the first few hours of Demons Souls is tough, but once you begin to understand the system, when to spend your souls, and when to keep them, when to turn back and cash in the souls you have and when to press on for more bounty. The fantastic way the combat is considered and tense, not pandering to button mashing or blind luck. you realise that this is game of staggering achievement that anyone who calls themselves a real gamer should play.

If you live in the US count yourselves lucky you got access to this wonderful experience and embrace it, the EU isnt getting a release at all, so we are all having to import it :/

i went to 7 gamestops in my area to find this game last week.
the one I finally stopped at had 3 copies.

I'm frustrated at the lack of info on what happens when you level up
I'm frustrated on how hard some of the bosses are (penatrator, from 1-3)
I'm frustrated that its now time that I have to go on soul runs just to buy some arrows.

but i can't stop playing the game.
I've started over twice trying to find that perfect character
I picked the temple knight. But from what I read, you can be whoever you want eventually.

anyways, this game is not too hard, once you know the layout, figure out the controls, know when to fight and when to run.

If you like RGP's then get this game,. you may not like it at first, but then it will grow on you.

Every level up gives you EXTRA defense points. This means that when you level up, you automatically take LESS damage from enemies.

The game encourages you to grind and explore and die and learn from your mistakes. It's really the only way to play.

Also, your Soul Level determines what level Black Phantoms can invade your system as well as what level Blue Phantoms you can summon to help you.

How is this a review? Outside of a casual reference to difficult controls or an older inventory system, how does this review adress the actual gameplay?

How, among other things, is the sound design? Framerate? Graphical presentation? Story? How does multiplayer work? And most importantly, how do these game elements stack up against other games?

I am able to ascertain how the reviewer FEELS after playing, but good reviews should always explain why, and moreover, what else a game might have to offer players who approach the game differently.

I am not sticking up for Demon's Souls here, I don't think this review was overly harsh or overly kind - it just fails to do the most basic things an entertainment product review should do. Your readers expect better.

Honestly that was a good review without going into too much detail & spoilers.

I've heard the game is downright brutal... likely a rental or demo download (if there is a demo) to check it out first... there's a fine line between fun and frustrating and for each and every person that line will be different. I'll admit the reviews of it's difficulty are a bit discouraging but I really hope there's a demo so I can check it out for myself and decide.

@Overgauss:

A review that is worth the time to read it would suffice. Him liking it our not is incidental to the quality of the review. Just because he must say it's good just like everyone else already did, does not mean I'm not going to take the time to explain to people like you, who call others critical of the the review "fanboys", why the review sucked.

A negative review is actually a good thing unless you are truly one of the most stalwart of fanboys. It allows one to make informed purchasing decisions. This is why a crappy review with a vote of purchase confidence is not really adding much to the discussion. Demon's Souls is the hottest thing out there right now. We already KNOW that everyone is buying it.

Same pictures. Different review.. Warning spoilers lol http://gaming-spree.com/smileral/2009/08/21/demons-souls-review/ at least this guy compiled all the other information and experience that's kind of common web knowledge-ish into digestible text.

Crap since I'm here let me just spit this out there too. But first the set-up.

You're in a narrow corridor equipped with a claymore or polearm and some enemy is fast approaching you, and already you are low on health but wish to conserve your remaining herbs. After swinging your weapon it clangs ineffectually against the narrow cobblestone walls, leaving an opening for the creature to swipe away your last bit of life.

Me: Crap I knew I should have equipped my rapier or dagger. WTF was I thinking?! You can't just swing a big ass sword in that narrow hallway. Fuck what I should have done was roll to the side to get more swinging room in the next chamber!

Him: Poor design decision.

I'm kind of surprised that the reviewer [Alexander Sliwinski] didn't talk about the real-world physics involved with the game. I mean, you can't just swing a pole-arm inside of a narrow corridor, you'll obviously get the pole-arm stuck on the wall.

About the only other game that did this (that I know of) was Berserk.

@Overgauss: Sliwinski [snip]... Or are you trying to say that he MUST complete the game to truly appreciate and understand it, so as to write a review?[snip]....
STFU fanboys, it's getting old."

What gamer doesn't agree that video games are just as valid or expressive of a medium as a book, movie or even an album? Yet somehow it doesn't deserve the same respect as those other mediums, because those that interact with it don't demand it!

If someone only read the first 2 chapters of a ten chapter book are they qualified to review it? According to you yes! One can accurately give their impressions on the first 2 chapters of the book, however they are definitely NOT qualified to review the entirety of the book as if they had read it when they didn't. How can that person truly understand and appreciate it as you say? Some books must be read more than once to catch everything.

Have you no experience with this. Have you not watched a movie twice and caught something the second time around that you missed the first? I'm not saying you have to play a game twice before reviewing it, but at least once should be the norm.

Video games will always be a second class medium as long as gamers continue to have second class demands of it and the news sources that represent it.

This will remain true even though the industry itself makes first class dollars.

If after only watching the first half hour of Office Space, Roger Ebert claimed that it was "boring and contrite" and "slow moving and thusly only the nerdiest need watch it" although "the movie itself is not without merit and a worthy watch." I would totally nerd rage on his ass.

You should too.

Playing through it as pure evil now?

When you start a new game, you generally want to end the game with highly positive World Tendencies to unlock the trophies. After that, all the New Game+ should be played with highly negative World Tendencies so that you can get more loot and much much more souls.

Thing with New Game+ is that all the monsters are much harder than before and there's a certain amount of level-parity that the game uses in order to keep challenging you. There's hardly ever a time where you will feel godly powerful, even at level 700+.

A real review of Demon's Souls!

This game sucks it on a level that even The AVGN could appreciate!! It sucks in the same way every trial and error game has ever sucked!! It sucks it worse then Superman for N64! And that really sucked it! Let me explain...

The Good - Just to be fair, the game has beautiful graphics, amazingly detailed world, creative art design & excellent sound! Overall excellent presentation!

The Bad - Gameplay sucks it on a level beyond anything you've ever played! Demon's Souls gameplay mechanics are that of a psychopath with severe OCD! OCD because you do everything over and over again! Thats the O in the OCD! And psychopath because you do everything over and over again, but without any purpose. Forget the difficulty of the game, or the rules of the game! The basic gameplay, the way the game... plays out is absolutely terrible! It reminds me of the reviews done by the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN above) and the terrible games from past. This will be one of those games. So, lets examine what sucks!

Levels, they suck it! - When you die and you will die, you have two options. Turn off the game and go buy Uncharted 2 whilst selling Demon's Souls on Craigslist, or go through the same level again and try to find your body (blood stain actually). Find your body, get your souls (game currency) back. Great! But you will die and die and die and die and die! Which is ok! Lots of games kill you a lot! Ever play an online game, say COD4 or Bad Company! You die almost as much as you kill! The ratio is much better here, but the problem is with what happens when you die! Forget loosing the souls, because if you really wanted to you could grind the crap out of the first 100 yards of the first level and get all the souls you want! Its that after you die, you start the level again, and everything is was it was! And you do this over and over again! So it turns out that you play each level over and over again! And then it dawned on me! These levels are short as hell actually. So there not much of content when it comes to level! The reason it may seem like it, is because you repeat the shit out of each level!

Solution 1: Make the levels much much much much much bigger! Throw in far more content, puzzles, treasures, clues, lore, and necessary NPC's. I like that each NPC is capable of killing you in a few blows, so don't change the difficulty of that. When you die, start at the beginning, but retain your progress of kills. Fine loose the souls and heal the monster that killed you.

Solution 2: Same thing with the level size, but let me re-spawn where I died, charge half of my souls and move on with the game!

Movement - It sucks it! - For a game that is designed, touted and reviewed as being a tactical combat RPG, its anything but! MGS4 is tactical! COD4 is tactical! SF4 is very tactical! (Whats with all the 4's) Tactical means that you can use your character, the defense, offense, movement and other skills in a tactical manner! Button mashings is not tactical! Nor is block, heavy swing, block, heavy swing, block, heavy swing! There is nothing tactical about the game! But worse still, the game forbids you from actually trying to make it tactical! Walls get in the way! Want to jump over a wall and down on a enemy? Nope! Want to just look over a wall and shoot at an enemy? Nope! Straffing and Lock on gets in the way! Want to fight and straff, you must lock on! Want to lock on to another monster quickly and change tactics, not so much, you can do it, but the lock on has killed me many a times! Want to not have to worry about lock on and fight freely! Yup, but no straffing! WTF?!?! Seriously? You can't straff unless youre locked on, but the lockon is so shitty, that it kills you!

Solution 1: Let me use the environment to my advantage! I can't swing a big sword in side because the programmers metticulously scripted it to hit the wall and halt my swing, but F U if you want to jump over a small 3 foot wall (some you can actually, but not all for some reason) to get out of the hallway! See Uncharted, Assassins Creed and MGS 4 (to some extent).

Solution 2: Give me more fighting options! This is why SF has 3 punch buttons and 3 kick buttons and an umpteenth number of way, combinations and specials you can do with them! Let me swing from the left, right, above, upercut, everything! Let me use tactics to get an advantage on a enemy!

Pointless - It will become! - Now before you get all constipated about my playing skill I can assure you that I am no noob and can hold my own in any FPS and started back with Counterstrike 1.0. A video game is supposed to be fun! And a good challenge can be a lot of fun! Take for example the Gran Turismo series! You can upgrade your car only so much, in the end if you can't drive it, you still loose. So you really upgrade your skills! There is no story, no plot, just events! In the same way Demon's Souls has little loot content, or much of any content actually! So your progress is dependent on your actual skill as a player, and not grinding for that uber sword of asskicking +3 that you get in WOW. But unlike Gran Turismo which manages to take the same skill concept and far less presentation, Demon's Souls becomes pointless very soon! If the basic gameplay is not fun, nor challenging in a rewarding way, then why play it?

Solution 1: Design a better game! Seriously! Halo has a purpose! COD4 has a purpose! FFXII has a purpose! Create consequence and seriously no one cares about World Tendency! Btw, Fable has great purpose and consequence! Ohh right this was supposed to be a solution! Make each place, castle, fortress, bog, whatever I conquer good and beautiful! Make the whole world continuous and change as the game progresses! Also, make the skill rewards actually rewards! The game play is waaaayyyyyy too simple for what it puts you through! If a game is going to throw out a big challenge, at least give me the ability to learn many many skills and many many ways to defeat it! Hack & Slash and & Roll is not enough!

Demon's Souls is about as fun as a slot machine! You know that if you keep at it, you will eventually win! But isn't a game supposed to be a wholly fun! Take Bad Company, a graphically unimpressive game with a pretty piss poor story and dated gameplay! But damn its fun, as is the online play! The level of skill required to play and beat Demon's Souls is not that high, and you don't so much progress in gameplay skills as you do in awareness of what the game is! Remember, block, heavy swing, block, avoid jumping skeletons! You could add a roll, jumpback and parry which is all great!! But even those are easy enough to pickup after 30 minutes of play.

What Demon's Souls amounts to is a pointless grind through a short repetitive game that has little to offer in fun and less in the sense of accomplishment you get from defeating a great challenge add to that a very very very linear gameplay with little option to improvise, change up or use new tactics. I had more fun trying to play MGS4 through with only the tranquilizer for the Big Boss Emblem (I didn't get it).

Anyone interested in a used copy of Demon's Souls?

PS: The online aspect is a clever in the same way heated rear view mirrors are clever one a car! Clever, but useless!

Upon reading the majority of comments, it has rose my excitement about the game to the point I may just run out and get it. I love RPGs, but they seem to have been lacking in the challenge part lately. Apparently I'm not the only one feeling this way. Batman A/A was good, but I got bored with it, still haven't finished it. Kinda lost interest. So I'm looking forward to this one, just by the comments alone and will hopefully be impressed and surprised by the challenges and fun that awaits.

THANKS TO ALL WHO POST!! Especially those who have constructive comments =)...to those that do nothing but bitch and complain.....why?

Again, if you're going to pick up Demon's Souls, call up the stores ahead of time and check to see which store has it. I've generally found that Fry's has a large enough stockpile that people have been able to pick it up from there. Other than that, you should ask for your Soundtrack and Artbook because you are technically entitled to them. I was at the Atlus Demon's Souls panel at Anime Expo 2009 and their "Atlus Spoils You" segment mentioned that every copy of Demon's Souls comes with the Artbook and Soundtrack.

Also, before heading out to the retail stores, check out the Amazon.com listing for Demon's Souls.

Most of these comments felt extremely biased (save for a couple of great commenters who actually explained what they liked about the game in great detail) and usually only listed either the negative or positive aspects of the game. The actual review given is lacking, but good for a laugh or two.

I'm not defined by a specific system (I currently own an Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Playstation 3), so I can hopefully give my opinions in a hopefully non-biased manner. I'll first list the cons, that way the pros will taste even sweeter.

Cons:
-The story felt a tad bit weak. There's no real need to pay much attention to it. This of course, doesn't damper gameplay as you can pretty much pave your on road to your liking.

-The lock on system. It works quite well actually, clicking R3 to lock on and cycling with right analogue, bit for melee attacks, it's the only way to strafe. It can be a bit frustrating at times, but you can usually get around it as long as you're prepared.

-Difficulty. This is the one everyone's been going on about. The game is difficult, yes. But simply saying it's hard isn't enough. Remember Megaman for the NES? Back then, that could have been considered difficult (trick floors, no saves, die and start at the beginning of the level?). It was all about memory. Demon's Souls can be considered difficult in that if you're ill prepared to fight every battle as if you will die, you will..well..die. Those who say things like "If you die, it's your own fault and you deserve it" fail to realize that even the best players can fall victim to enemies not because they made a simple mistake or became overconfident, but because the enemies simply overwhelmed them, or that they just couldn't beat an opponent at that given moment, ill equipped or not.
~Another note is that the game can be cheap at times. For beginners, there's really no sense of direction. And a couple of the bosses can be overpowering for some (I'm looking at YOU Flamelurker. Even with high equipment- if he knocks you down or makes you stagger, consider yourself dead seeing as there's a high chance he'll continuously attack nonstop. Maybe he's been practicing in Ninja Gaiden?) Of course, just as easily the game can reward you greatly for being "cheap" yourself. I'm sure those who have played know what I'm talking about. (Death Cloud. Ohohohoho)

Now for some delicious pros.

Pros:
-The battle system. It works well and is very easy to learn. Your back buttons are used for attacking or defending, while your face buttons are used for items, evasive maneuvers, and other such objects. The d-pad is used to switch weapons, magic, and items on the fly, and can be very useful for various situations. Even more so is the ability to still move when you open the start menu. Although this sounds simple, it can be quite useful if you don't have the right equipment for the job (in other words, running and changing equipment = genius! Especially for when you're fleeing enemies).

-Online. Demon's Souls have one of the most unique online modes I've seen in quite some time. From the ability to read/leave helpful or misleading messages to touching the bloodstains of other players, watching them die in hilarious fashions. Recruiting players to help you in your quest to being one of the recruited plays nicely as well.
~Diving a little further, PvP works surprisingly well. Invading or being invaded, you take on other opponents known as Black Phantoms. There's no telling when they'll show up, making it a tasty surprise when they do. Unlucky for those who are low leveled and attack by a Black Phantom, but victory is even more sweet when you vanquish one. (To those jerks who invade your world and repeatedly cast Soul Arrow or Acid. As if just to piss you off) You'll also occasionally see white ghost: these are other players. Usually following them can help considerably, or lead you to your doom. It also gives you an idea of what's going on at times.

-Customization. It's deep and gratifying. From you face down to your armor and weapons, you're making your own unique character that no one else can make. Leveling up is different from most conventional rpg's in that you use soul (the game's currency) to make your character stronger to your liking. Be warned though- choosing which stats to level up plays a big role on how your character develops early in the game. Upgrading your weapons or learning new magic with the souls you gain is also quite important, though it's possible for any class (You choose from 10 classes, each with its own benefits and drawbacks) to inevitably reach the same strength as any other.
~This expands on the replayability. Going through the game a second time to increase your character even further, as well as perhaps reach an alternate ending and acquire new items.

All in all, the game itself is quite good. The voice acting is well done, and the music and sounds make every stage feel unique and its own. (Especially the Prison. Nice, scary feel. Footsteps and moans included.)
The graphics are gorgeous, especially in motion (Many people try to compare it to Uncharted 2. Though not as vivid and lively as Uncharted 2, Demon's Soul is still like a really handsome person you can help but glance at every now-and-then).
The online play is seamless and well done.

This is a game for those who want to play a game where you must quickly learn from your mistakes and grow, or make the same mistakes over and over again. Definitely not a game for those who aren't willing to put quite a bit of their time into it.
This game can be your friend, or a vicious biker gang out for the sole purpose of kicking your ass over and over again. It's not the perfect game, but if you own a PS3, you should at least give it a try and see if it suits your taste.

I can only help this review was moderately helpful.

I see where you come from but that was one pretty terrible review.

I have to disagree with the beginning though, how can there be lack of direction when each of the five levels are set out and are all mostly linear. Also, i thought the inventory and menus were really good, soo easy to access a range of items on the fly. As for the controls, i don't know what you're talking about cause they made sence to me, and somehow i don't think parrying is supposed to be easy.

Of course this is my opinion and that is yours, but at least all other 'reviews' gave readers agood image of the game through it's difficulty.

LOL... This review sounds like someone who got the a** nailed multiple times... The game is indeed dificult, but it's far from being impossible. As I like to say, it punishes stupidity so, if you think it's harder than it should be, or that it's something only a masochist would enjoy... so think again, you might be playing as a stupid.

This review is what happens when someone used to play on "normal" difficult levels, plays a game which is set to Hard by default (and "nightmare" from the second run).
