Saving Private Ryan's Rodat writing WoW movie

MTV Movies Blog reports that the massively multiviewer onscreen RPG now has a writer: Robert Rodat, best known for writing the script for Saving Private Ryan. Hey, this movie might turn out okay! Of course, he also worked on the script for 10,000 BC. So this movie could be somewhere between Saving Private Ryan and 10,000 BC.
As for new details about the plot: Raimi didn't really bring up any when talking to MTV. But he did describe the ideal approach: to capture "the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents. I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible."

Does anyone have any acid for my eyes? Or should I just pull the trigger?
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 12th 2009 8:47PM
Eh, triggers are obnoxious. I suggest just going with the ole' hanging. Much more honorable if you ask me.

I thought seppuku was the most honorable...

I never expected a WoW movie before a Halo film...
Ark Angel @ Oct 12th 2009 8:40PM
Ii think this could be really awesome if done in CGI... by Blizzard themselves... The CGI cutscenes and intros are just amazing for every game blizzard makes..
mortegro545 @ Oct 13th 2009 1:12AM
They said the same thing about Final Fantasy and look how that turned out.
D dogg @ Oct 13th 2009 1:53AM
mortegro545 makes a good point but there is ONE glaring difference...
Square's CGI movies weren't consistent; Blizzard's on the other hand are consistently good for the time. Look all the way back to the original Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft and you'll that while the tech may be low, the actual content itself was good.
Diablo 2 movies were absolutely AWESOME. World of Warcraft movies are amazing. The one for the expansion blew me away honestly.
Lastly, we're comparing an Eastern to a Western culture. Of course Final Fantasy 7 turned out the way it did... for Japanese, it was for the most part perfect.
Ark Angel @ Oct 13th 2009 9:50AM
Yeah I figured someone might bring up FInal Fantasy.. I don't the cgi wasn't all that bad in that movie.. but it lacked in story for me. Still D Dogg is right... Blizzard has consistently always been great.. you forgot Starcraft by the way :D
Sly @ Oct 12th 2009 8:41PM
saving private ryan is my favorite war movie of all time, so this is pretty good news. now i'm just wondering about what this movie's story will be like...

If there isnt a single line in this movie that says the word ganking/noob/OP warlocks, I will be very dissapointed
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington] @ Oct 12th 2009 8:43PM
I think a Starcraft movie would be better.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 12th 2009 9:02PM
Seconded.
Wayne Campbell @ Oct 12th 2009 9:08PM
I would say Diablo, but movies based on swords-and-dragons-and-magic-and demons games never turn out well.
And as an example, I would like to use "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Movie"
Kulahan @ Oct 12th 2009 11:49PM
Starcraft has nowhere near as much lore as WoW does. While I like the Starcraft setting better, there's so much story to WoW, it's like it's writing itself. They could have a monkey pick up pieces of lore from wowwiki, and it'd be well done.
freaparn @ Oct 13th 2009 12:47AM
That would be the same monkey which retconned the worgen and goblins into Cataclysm, I presume?
Mopo @ Oct 13th 2009 12:17PM
@Wayne Campbell
Generally, you are correct. Most films that are set in the fantasy realm turn out to be very very cheesy, like going to a medieval convention; however, there are a few exceptions. I think Conan the Barbarian, the Lord of the Rings, Excalibur, and even Beast Master were decent for sword magic, etc.
Wayne Campbell @ Oct 13th 2009 5:41PM
You are correct Mopo. Those movies you listed were quite good. I was referring more to specifically movies based on fantasy video games.
But books make better movies than games because they are all story while games have the gameplay element factored in.
Discotheque @ Oct 12th 2009 8:45PM
Don't understand the hate. A series like this has some cool backstory and mythos. It was a good choice for a possibly successful videogame movie if they go the LOTR route with it.
Sam Raimi is a pretty good director. I've forgiven him for the craptacular Spiderman 3. And all of his other films have been fun.
However, the scriptwriter has me in doubt.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington] @ Oct 12th 2009 8:47PM
Personally, I don't hate it. I just find it bizarre.
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 12th 2009 8:47PM
You mean you didn't like the dancing in Spiderman 3?
No Kill Tayler @ Oct 12th 2009 9:35PM
That was my favorite part :]
RKN @ Oct 12th 2009 8:55PM
Don't make a World of Warcraft movie, just make a WarCraft movie, based on the previous games like 1 and 2.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 12th 2009 9:01PM
That makes entirely too much sense, and the first two aren't mainstream enough for hollywood.
Wayne Campbell @ Oct 12th 2009 9:08PM
Ok. 3 then.
Blank-Mage @ Oct 12th 2009 9:00PM
You know what I'd like? I'd like someone to hand me a copy of "Lord of the Rings" on DVD with "World of Warcraft" taped over the title. Because that's the best we can hope for.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 12th 2009 9:07PM
Wow really? SPR is one of my favorite movies of all time and 10k BC is......not

Well, I mean...it wasn't bad...
It was...uh...
Yeah...ok.
Kinsey @ Oct 12th 2009 9:19PM
Screw you guys ... i happen to like 10 000 BC.
I mean I went in knowing it would be cheesy as hell and didnt expect anything out if it in the first place, so i came out not dissappointed.
freaparn @ Oct 13th 2009 12:51AM
So at what point did "I went in expecting crap and I wasn't disappointed" become "I liked it" in your society?

Saving Pvt. Ryan and 10,000 B.C. is like the entire spectrum of writing ability. It like if Mariah Carey sang Johnny Cash songs.
Charlie_Six @ Oct 13th 2009 12:20AM
Saving Private Ryan's script wasn't all that hot. It was just the direction and production values (Spielberg + money) that made the movie. I mean if you read the script itself... what are you really seeing there?
A few pages of dialogue, that's about it.
No one cares about the script writer in a porn. Same goes with war movies.
Discotheque @ Oct 13th 2009 12:46AM
Actually some war movies have great scripts. But Saving Private Ryan really was about the cinematography and direction really. So yeah, this writer doesn't impress me at all.

Maybe Starcraft would have more lore if they actually RELEASED Starcraft II instead of putting it off six years for WOW.
JeezWhiz87 @ Oct 13th 2009 5:49AM
GOD DAMN THIS COMMENT SYSTEM! That was a reply to Alton Brown, which when I posted it said "replying to Alton Brown". What. The. Fuck?
Malakii @ Oct 13th 2009 12:24PM
They should definitely do a Starcraft movie. Yes there's not nearly as much lore as there is for Warcraft, but I think that would work to the movies advantage, there wouldn't be need to cut out a lot of stuff to fit into a 2 1/2 hour movie for example. One of the biggest challenges they face with the Warcraft movie (and its not a WoW movie btw, they've said that a few times now. its merely based in the Warcraft universe) is how to introduce all that backstory and the characters for people that have no clue about any of it. With a Starcraft movie, that would be considerably easier to do in a condensed timespan.
Mopo @ Oct 13th 2009 12:24PM
Do you honestly believe that was a bad decision by Blizzard? A cash cow like WoW put to the side to make more lore for Starcraft? I like SC and all, but this is about making money to fund future projects like SCII and make it even better (maybe).
