Gran Turismo 5's Kazunori Yamauchi says he could give you his studio's next entry in the venerable racing-sim series right now ... but he won't. Speaking with Famitsu last week (translated by 1UP), the Polyphony Digital studio head explains that while "We could release it any time we want," he's more interested in trying to give the game "that classic GT-style." And though "daily progress is slow," the Japanese developer assures us that "it's still going forward at a steady clip."
Unlike the PSP iteration's somewhat lackluster feature set, Yamauchi intends on going "way beyond gamer expectations" with GT5, even confirming the export of cars earned in GT PSP to next March's PS3 sequel. We're hoping he goes way beyond our expectations as well and delivers the game to other territories in a more timely fashion.

LOL...you read my mind.
I swear, everytime I see a picture of Yamauchi-san, he looks like he just came off a particularly bad season of Survivor.
I'm loving GT PSP...it's what the PSP was made for...quick games on the run, or while cooking, etc.

Yeah, we could put it out right now, no big deal. It's totally ready. We're just tweaking it here and there. We're just playing it cool. Probably put it out there for you in the spring of 2010... maybe... probably... I think. We just can't decide on the box art, that's all.

The interesting part of that article is that he says he could release it right now, except that it's *not* totally ready. Given that they're still making daily progress on it.
Which makes his whole comment kind of, odd. Because going off what he's saying in a roundabout way, he may as well have told the press the same thing two days after development had begun on it
"Yes we could release it right now [unfinished], but we won't [because it's not finished]."
WHOAH.

@Crayfish: Maybe the game itself is 100% finished (minus some polish here and there), all the remaining work is being consumed by modelling and fine tuning the car line-up, and so releasing it now vs. waiting for another six months would come down to the difference between releasing a game with 500 cars (meaning more to come as DLC later on) and releasing it with 900 cars right from the start?

Do you really think they are tweaking it? I bet if this game was released 6 months ago, it would be the exact same thing we will get in March. They are just listening to the marketing dept and sitting on it to let hype build. nothing more....

@Fargus
Do you really believe that? If it releases in March 2010 it will be facing some stiff competition with all the other great Q1 2010 games. That's got to be a marketing nightmare! You have to make sure your game is not only the best of the bunch, but the best advertised as well.
Not to mention that the longer a game takes the more some people will lose interest and move on to other similar games, like Forza 3.

why did you link forza screenshots when you're trying to talk up GT? Were you trying to say the forza screens were bad? Because they certainly weren't. That can't have been your point because you said mmmhm good pudding. Is it sarcasm? A Joke? What? I can't figure it out, but i don't want someone to actually be that stupid.

I don't know Yamauchi from his past games, and maybe he's a VERY big deal, but that still is a dick thing to say. I get the same, "You'll want to get a second job JUST to afford the PS3!" vibe.

The point he's trying to make is that he could have released it at a point where it was just old atari 2600 graphics but he's trying to make it the best possible production that he can which means holding on to it until he feels it's right. If more developers did that we'd have fewer pieces of garbage polluting the shelves.

I don't see why they wouldn't, if it really is that good. If they have extra time, then make sure the damage model is excellent, and add in more cockpit views. with all this extra time that they're bragging about, when it does come out, it had better be the best damn game ever

I dont understand where all this negativity in the comments is coming from. It clear that GT5 is more than just a game to Yamauchi. He spend the past five years of his life working on it, and of course he wants it to be perfect, or at least as close to perfection as possible.

We're just having some fun. This year has been tough for gamers. So many great games were delayed until Spring 2010. It's our humor that has sustained us for the latter half of 2009.

If that were at all true, you would think Sony would have forced them to get it out the door for the holiday season. I mean, yeah, the game is sure to sell shitloads anyway (might be the first PS3 game to break 10 million), but having it out in that window would have been a surefire way to sell lots of PS3s in the bargain

I'm sure the game itself probably is finished and they're just tweaking the UI and what have you. Personally, I'm digging the psp version and the lack of a campaign hasn't hindered that.
I think the delay has to do with a release window and marketing campaign. They probably don't want to step on Uncharted 2's toes or release it in the time frame with assassins creed 2, modern warfare 2 etc ... I'm pretty sure it's more of a strategic decision than anything. It was going to be announced at either Leipzig or TGS before being pulled at the last minute. So yeah I tend to believe Kaz Yamamuchi on this one. I'll have the PSP version & NFS Shift to hold me over.
This game will offer an ungodly amount of content for the price especially compared to other entries in the racing genre. I'm also glad he doesn't have to talk shit on other games :cough Turn 10 cough: to validate his prooduct. That quiet confidence speaks volumes.
Honestly I think both Forza 3 & GT:5 are going to epic. I know it'll sink a few years of my time ... Take all the time you need Yams. I'll be here.
