Gran Turismo 5's Yamauchi: 'We could release it any time we want'
Gran Turismo 5's Kazunori Yamauchi says he could give you his studio's next entry in the venerable racing-sim series right now ... but he won't. Speaking with Famitsu last week (translated by 1UP), the Polyphony Digital studio head explains that while "We could release it any time we want," he's more interested in trying to give the game "that classic GT-style." And though "daily progress is slow," the Japanese developer assures us that "it's still going forward at a steady clip."
Unlike the PSP iteration's somewhat lackluster feature set, Yamauchi intends on going "way beyond gamer expectations" with GT5, even confirming the export of cars earned in GT PSP to next March's PS3 sequel. We're hoping he goes way beyond our expectations as well and delivers the game to other territories in a more timely fashion.

Solace @ Oct 13th 2009 5:40PM
yeah just like you tried to stop pollution huh?
el serpiente @ Oct 13th 2009 5:43PM
GT5 is as important as a cure for cancer? Wow, I didn't know you were such a GT fanboy...

Humor just went right over your head, didn't it?
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Oct 13th 2009 5:48PM
I was about to stop all the pollution, but then I got married. Suddenly, saving the fucking planet wasn't a fucking priority.
Though technically I am taking care of another planet. Rosie is one big ass woman.

@El Serpierte: That was stupid and you should be embarrassed.

Nice one, planet. I see you've upped your game from dick jokes and mom insults. I wonder what you'll learn at the playground tomorrow?

And this is why I love Joystiq!
kentuckyfried @ Oct 13th 2009 9:56PM
LOL...you read my mind.
I swear, everytime I see a picture of Yamauchi-san, he looks like he just came off a particularly bad season of Survivor.
I'm loving GT PSP...it's what the PSP was made for...quick games on the run, or while cooking, etc.
Autobot @ Oct 13th 2009 10:08PM
Microsoft is paying close attention to Yamauchi I'm sure.

I know I'm late to the party here, but as you've said to me so many times, sizzurp: "Jokes are supposed to be funny."
uncle jesse @ Oct 13th 2009 5:34PM
Yeah, we could put it out right now, no big deal. It's totally ready. We're just tweaking it here and there. We're just playing it cool. Probably put it out there for you in the spring of 2010... maybe... probably... I think. We just can't decide on the box art, that's all.
THE HEAVY @ Oct 13th 2009 9:43PM
Ployphony is full of pompous assholes
kentuckyfried @ Oct 13th 2009 9:58PM
"We could release it right now, but we won't b/c we'd get our sales heavily diluted by Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, and the worst of the lot, MW2"
Crayfish @ Oct 13th 2009 10:16PM
The interesting part of that article is that he says he could release it right now, except that it's *not* totally ready. Given that they're still making daily progress on it.
Which makes his whole comment kind of, odd. Because going off what he's saying in a roundabout way, he may as well have told the press the same thing two days after development had begun on it
"Yes we could release it right now [unfinished], but we won't [because it's not finished]."
WHOAH.
nahworry @ Oct 14th 2009 9:40AM
@Crayfish: Maybe the game itself is 100% finished (minus some polish here and there), all the remaining work is being consumed by modelling and fine tuning the car line-up, and so releasing it now vs. waiting for another six months would come down to the difference between releasing a game with 500 cars (meaning more to come as DLC later on) and releasing it with 900 cars right from the start?
Marius @ Oct 13th 2009 5:34PM
Perfection takes time, let them keep working on it, to make it THE definitive racing game of this generation

good pudding huh
Fargus @ Oct 13th 2009 5:47PM
Do you really think they are tweaking it? I bet if this game was released 6 months ago, it would be the exact same thing we will get in March. They are just listening to the marketing dept and sitting on it to let hype build. nothing more....
MystileArmor @ Oct 13th 2009 5:52PM
Did anyone zay chokolat pooding?
sonicspike41 @ Oct 13th 2009 5:52PM
@Fargus
Do you really believe that? If it releases in March 2010 it will be facing some stiff competition with all the other great Q1 2010 games. That's got to be a marketing nightmare! You have to make sure your game is not only the best of the bunch, but the best advertised as well.
Not to mention that the longer a game takes the more some people will lose interest and move on to other similar games, like Forza 3.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 13th 2009 5:55PM
What make you thing GT5, won't have any bugs?
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 13th 2009 7:13PM
why did you link forza screenshots when you're trying to talk up GT? Were you trying to say the forza screens were bad? Because they certainly weren't. That can't have been your point because you said mmmhm good pudding. Is it sarcasm? A Joke? What? I can't figure it out, but i don't want someone to actually be that stupid.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 13th 2009 7:22PM
Dark wayne the pictures he show had some bugs and the other video show Forza 3 not being much an improvement over the last one, he tries to say that since Forza 3 is a glitch filled crapfest then GT5 would be a way better game.
I don't agree with his ideas btw, I'm just translating Sony fanboy language for you. ( some detective you turn out to be :P)
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 13th 2009 5:35PM
I want it now!
Viking @ Oct 13th 2009 5:41PM

Cypher @ Oct 13th 2009 5:41PM
Oh?
So you can, but you won't?
Well guess what?
I can end World Hunger right now, I just don't feel like it. >:(
Stab @ Oct 13th 2009 5:42PM
actually we are to busy playing it!
we can release it now!
but this game rocks! we dont have time to decide the boxart!
got to go now!
Wayne @ Oct 13th 2009 9:12PM
They are too busy playing the Forza 3 demo.
CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 13th 2009 5:42PM
I don't know Yamauchi from his past games, and maybe he's a VERY big deal, but that still is a dick thing to say. I get the same, "You'll want to get a second job JUST to afford the PS3!" vibe.
PN04 @ Oct 13th 2009 7:18PM
The point he's trying to make is that he could have released it at a point where it was just old atari 2600 graphics but he's trying to make it the best possible production that he can which means holding on to it until he feels it's right. If more developers did that we'd have fewer pieces of garbage polluting the shelves.
mars @ Oct 13th 2009 5:44PM
I don't see why they wouldn't, if it really is that good. If they have extra time, then make sure the damage model is excellent, and add in more cockpit views. with all this extra time that they're bragging about, when it does come out, it had better be the best damn game ever
JACK @ Oct 14th 2009 1:09AM
Have they ever disappointed ?
Space @ Oct 13th 2009 5:46PM
is this game going to bring anything new to the table? any new online community type features?
RKN @ Oct 13th 2009 5:47PM
Play reverse psychology on the guy.
"Hey Yamauchi, fine, don't release the game, we don't want it anyways! Keep it in limbo where it belongs!"

As long as the game releases some time in March (like they said)I'm good.
Neuromancer @ Oct 13th 2009 5:47PM
I wonder what the rally portion of this game will be like. That's really the only part I'm interested in, I love rally games and there aren't many of them these days.
bluesky_v2.01 @ Oct 13th 2009 5:50PM
I dont understand where all this negativity in the comments is coming from. It clear that GT5 is more than just a game to Yamauchi. He spend the past five years of his life working on it, and of course he wants it to be perfect, or at least as close to perfection as possible.
