Jordan Mechner pitched Sands of Time film with game-derived trailer
Prince of Persia series creator Jordan Mechner came up with a pretty ingenious way of making sure that the upcoming film adaptation of his beloved action-platforming franchise wouldn't diverge wildly from the source material. After the jump you'll find a trailer which Mechner himself cut together in order to pitch the film to Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney -- a trailer composed exclusively of clips from his well-received game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
On his personal blog, Mechner pointed out a number of elements sparsely used in the aforementioned trailer: Time travel, sand monsters, clairvoyant visions -- basically any supernatural plot devices which were apparently cut from the pitch he presented to the studio. Without these aspects, we wonder exactly what the film will focus on. Had they been stripped from the game, it would have been approximately four minutes long.

I hope so too. it is by far my favorite game last generation. I hedged my bets that this could be the one to break the game movie barrier.

Still would've been the best four minutes of my life. Maybe.

I'm excited. The game had this great Arabian Nights feel to it and the whole shimmery glow was amazing. I'm hoping they don't ruin that in the movie.
Still my favourite PoP until the most recent one they made.

Arabian Niiiiiiights,
Like Arabian Days.
More often than not
Are hotter than hot,
In a lot of good ways.

@Avatar:
Not true, actually. Deserts are generally cold at night.

I don't think this means what you think it means. (Hint - It's not referring to the temperature).

Doesn't do a great job of explaining what the story is about, but at least gives an idea of the kind of action the game has in it.

Had those elements been cut it whould have been a game that lasted for no more than an hour and fitted on a floppy disk, oh wait...
snarfoogle @ Oct 13th 2009 2:25PM
Yeah, what would PoP be without time travel and sand monsters? It would probably be really difficult and not fun at all...
Shimrra @ Oct 13th 2009 2:15PM
Wow looking at that game pic brings back great memories of that game.

Wouldn't mind actually seeing an actual trailer for the movie now.

The most important thing for a game movie is the involvement of the creator. Hopefully Mechner cares what happens unlike JK Rowling for example.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Oct 13th 2009 2:48PM
what a good game that was
Clavius @ Oct 13th 2009 3:35PM
I pray Bay doesnt mess this up as much as he did Transformers. Sure that movie was fun to watch but no substance beyond that. From my understanding is that to a extent the story of PoP was pretty epic.

Umm, Bay isn't directing this....
Clavius @ Oct 13th 2009 9:02PM
...Well then.. my fears are subsided...... lol..

I got sidetracked from this game...and the whole series really. I need to go back and finish it. It was really good. I have the first one on the gamecube. Any suggestions on the best platforms for the followups? I remember reading the first one actually looked best (not by much) on the gamecube, for a variety of weird reasons. I'm not sure what the best platforms were for the sequels.
