Ever the consummate hype man, Hideo Kojima is fluffing up Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker by teasing an apparent system-selling feature. "I haven't announced this yet, but there's another feature in [Peace Walker] that will surprise people, to the point where they'll want to go out and buy a PSP right now!" Kojima blabbed in the latest issue of Famitsu (as translated by 1UP). Short of some sort of in-game subliminal advertising (hey, these guys like to experiment), we're thinking The Two-Hundred-and-Forty-Nine-Ninety-Nine-Dollar Feature -- or maybe it's just "The Buck-Seventy Feature" -- could get lost in translation. After all, the two Peace Walker features that have been newly revealed seem distinctly Japanese in their appeal.
Also plucked from the pages of Famitsu, is the revelation that Peace Walker will feature Yamaha's Vocaloid software. (Yeah, we'd never heard of it either -- just wikipedia it.) If we understand it correctly, Vocaloid will allow certain weapons in the game to sing and scream. Mm-hmm, sounds incredibly annoying.
Also revealed: Those 2D-illustrated cut scenes? Yep, like this one. Well, they're interactive. "For example, if you zoom in on the scene where you first meet Paz, you can see the uniform she has on under her coat, and then what's under that," art director Yoji Shinkawa explained ... rather creepily. "It's an idea I came up with while thinking about what makes games different from movies or animation. I think it's pretty interactive." Hopefully, not too interactive.
MGS: Peace Walker to feature Vocaloid, interactive cutscenes ... and a surprise that'll make you buy a PSP?

Metal Gear has always had little gimmicks to their cut-scenes but does that really qualify as an interactive cut-scene? It's not like you can change the dialogue or outcome...

@Sly
I think that makes you more of a One Piece fan more than anything. Unless the unsaid notion is that you're a fan of One Piece in addition to actively watching a number of other anime.
'Course, I'd only heard about Vocaloid last year and have been watching anime for quite a fair bit longer than that, as well. If anything the statement probably should be that any weeaboo has heard of vocaloid.

Same as Reuben.
I've seen Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Wolf's Rain, Lupin III, Voltron, several Studio Ghibli films, about half of DBZ, most of Dragon Ball, and many other shows. (Call it the adult swim cocktail if you will).
This is the first time I'd ever heard of vocaloid.
I don't think it's more common among anime watchers, but perhaps because it's attracted a few famous Japanese muscians/actors, it's more popular among the Japanese loving crowd.

I think what he means is any anime fan that has a wide range of tastes involving things anime related might recognize this vocaloid character:

If you view image boards for anime pics, listen to japanese music and like something other than the flavor of the month (one piece, naruto, inuyasha) you probably have some knowledge of vocaloids or the characters that depict them.

Oh, and in regards to being *too* interactive, I submit Japan's history of hentai games. Of course, I don't think they're making MGS into one, (we should only be so lucky,) but bear in mind that as terrible as your imagination is, those depths have already been reached.

I've read and watched Saikano. Saikano is depressing in the sense that the whole friggin' world ends and it's just one character after another who gets offed for even trying to survive.
Grave of the Fireflies is one of the first few anime movies that I watched. Thing is, I can't really empathize with them seeing as how the story revolved around just staying alive in the middle of World War 2. It's a very charming movie, but it's not as dramatically depressing as Saikano is.
Speaking of depressing/critically acclaimed movies, there's a Chinese movie that's titled "To Live." The movie follows the life of a man and his family as he goes from being wealthy to going into debt/poverty shortly before WW2 kicked in all the way to the end of the Cultural Revolution. It's a very dramatic, very compelling story of what it means "to live", quite literally. I highly recommend it seeing as how it has won a great deal of critical acclaim at the Cannes Festival many years back.
