Review: Brutal Legend
I have to start by being brutally honest with you: Brütal Legend is not the game I hoped it would be. As a huge fan of director, designer and writer Tim Schafer's body of work – especially Double Fine's debut effort, Psychonauts – I had prepared myself for a wonderfully written, laugh-out-loud funny, constantly surprising experience filled with compelling characters that would have me grinning in anticipation of where it was taking me next.
What I came away with after beating the game in about six hours (granted, I didn't embark on many of the battle- and racing-based sub-missions, but I did do quite a lot of exploring) was the opinion that Eddie Riggs is a truly awesome character, along with a sense of wonder at the fantastic – and very metal – world Schafer and crew had created. Unfortunately, I also came away with a questioning of why so much of the game felt like a b-side to the hit single that had been its first couple of hours.

If you've played the demo, you know exactly how the game starts off. And, truly, this small slice of Brütal Legend contains some of the finished product's very best laughs -- and had me eager to find out what happened next.
I'd gotten the idea that the gameplay mechanics I'd just been introduced to (the ground smash, which proved to have multiple uses; double team attacks; precision control of Eddie's ride, The Deuce) would only become more important as I played on. But after these early, promising steps, I was met by a series of short, hack 'n' slash missions, the point of which was to get various factions -- each with their own unique abilities -- to join my army. After that, Brütal Legend became a series of real-time strategy battles, in which those factions became units to command (most easily from high above the action), and escort missions involving The Deuce. The scenery changed, but the game simply stopped surprising me in any significant way. The plot became predictable, the dialog lost its "Schaferisms" and I failed to care about the supporting cast. It almost felt like the game had been handed off to a different developer.

Schafer's last game, Psychonauts, is filled with story, gameplay and dialog moments that are among some of my very favorite gaming memories. In the case of Brütal Legend, those sorts of things vanish early on, providing me at best with, "Hey, wasn't it cool how the final battle was a little different than all the rest?"
It's no secret that Brütal Legend began life as a multiplayer game concept, as the single player's focus on RTS skirmishes bears out. The mechanics of the stage battles are never fully explained in single player, and something that obviously has a lot of depth -- as evidenced by the fact that the online multiplayer is quite a lot of fun -- boils down to "build the strongest units possible and send them toward the enemy's stage."
But it's also evident in that fact that one-on-one combat as Eddie -- this really cool guy with a giant battle axe and a guitar that shoots electricity -- is rote, rough and nothing special, no matter how many magic guitar strings, axe enhancements or combos I purchased.
The single player game ultimately feels like Double Fine tried to force the RTS concept it had come up with into an adventure game. Yes, it's lovely; yes, its presentation is top-notch; yes, the voice talent and soundtrack are pretty amazing. The overall experience just doesn't live up to its billing.

Hell yes. That is all.
Steve @ Oct 13th 2009 3:09PM
We've known that it is an RTS for a long time. While that will definitely lessen its broad appeal, as an RTS fan, I will love it (hopefully).
GiggMan @ Oct 13th 2009 3:16PM
Refresh my memory on what this has to do with Kotick.
Something to do with a lawsuit?
Ben @ Oct 13th 2009 3:18PM
A 'hell yes' at a mediocre review? That doesn't make any sense.
Someone Sneaky @ Oct 13th 2009 3:21PM
That was a "hell yes" to Brutal Legend, not this review (for the record).
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 13th 2009 3:33PM
"That was a "hell yes" to Brutal Legend, not this review (for the record)."
Yeah, you say that now because you got caught in making a "first" comment.

@Tracer_Ryuk
I think I've done you all a favor by blocking anybody from writing "F1RST!!!". You are welcome. :P
Ryan @ Oct 13th 2009 3:49PM
@GiggMan
Bobby Kotick is the dude who tried to get some money out of Double Fine (or was it EA?) since his company (Activision) dropped the publishing rights of the title after EA picked up the game.
From hence forth, he is referred to as "Uber Von Douchenstein".
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 13th 2009 3:57PM
...*sigh*
The reason people don't like first comments is because, it's useless, uninformative, they don't even read the article before commenting and an overall waste of space. Just like yours.

I enjoyed the demo. I do not expect SOLID FUCKING GOLD from every release I am moderately interested in, so if this game is halfway entertaining it will be worth it. Getting through the game in six hours? Fine - legit beef. Don't belittle the game because it fell short of your impossible expectations, that's how reviews like this get posted. Don't mar the positives with all of the negatives because it sounds like the overall experience was an enjoyable one.
I'll rewrite the whole review in one sentence:
"It was good, but I expected more."
There - done! How could you possibly expect lightning to strike twice and have ANOTHER Psychonauts? That's like asking Metallica to produce another "Master of Puppets", nice wish - but it won't happen. I'd like to see a game reviewer make a game, its not as easy as it looks.
dotzeno @ Oct 14th 2009 9:31AM
I brought the game yesterday, started playing it this morning and I finished it about 4 hours ago. About 9 hours gameplay. I didn't do all the secondary objectives, but I did all the first ones (right after you meet the rest of the crew). Brutal mode was pretty challenging. Had to replay some missions several times.
Game was good. The one thing I'd change about this game is it's short storyline. Jack Black did some good work. Characters were interesting and I'd like to know more about the characters. However, if it has nothing to do with this game's plot line, I guess I don't need to know.
If you asked me to rate this game, I'd give it a 7/10.
Now, onto Uncharted 2...
Reuben @ Oct 13th 2009 3:06PM
I plan on purchasing this regardless of its ability to match the hype. Things rarely ever do.
Ridgecity @ Oct 13th 2009 3:25PM
Why did everyone hype the game so much before, weren't people playing it before praising it?
I'm buying this game, I fell for all the hype, and believe it will deliver.
atrimus @ Oct 13th 2009 3:26PM
hype? so far Uncharted 2 has lived up to it, and Demon's Souls has surpassed it. this is all my opinion of course, and it's nothing against Brutal Legends, mind you.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 13th 2009 3:51PM
Kotaku gave it a rather favorable review:

I'm still picking it up this weekend...I hope I like it more than Randy!
Scott @ Oct 13th 2009 3:54PM
Did you like the demo? That was enough to turn me off to it. The only thing I thought was funny was right at the start, when the band was "You want to hear some heavy metal?!" and they started playing pop-trash. Everything else reminded me of games like Spyro.. with the "funny" protagonists who spout one-liners every 10 seconds. Much like Spyro, the game seemed like it'd be great for kids.. They would probably find more of the jokes to be funny, and would learn a thing or two about metal.
avan @ Oct 13th 2009 10:50PM
i might miss the date by a day or 2 but this is a definitive buy for me, maybe if alexander or someone else from 360 pod cast made the review ill believe it.
YinzJagz (PSN: YinzJagz) @ Oct 15th 2009 5:18PM
Maybe 5 years ago games didn't live up to the hype, but I would say all major releases that i have been looking forward to in the last 3 to 5 years have been dead on. Barring RE5 that is. As far as I am concerned this game did live up to the hype, a jack black metal game. No one ever said it was going to be a good game. I personally always thought brutal legend looked like absolute crap, and I love Jack Black and Metal. It just never looked promising at all. It is amazing reading some of the reviews on metacritic and seeing these reviewers coo over it. They should be stripped of their pens! Obviously blinded by their fanboydom, sooo sad. It got 90's and even a 100 from some guy. Even if it is a great game, no 6 hour game deserves anything above an 85 in my book. Too short to have any kind of replay value, and that is $10 dollars an hour to Buy this game. Just rent it and beat it in an afternoon, laugh at it and promptly forget it.
Kamizar @ Oct 13th 2009 3:06PM
That's one brutal review.

Why aren't you writing for Joystiq with puns like that?
Erluti @ Oct 13th 2009 3:56PM
What? He just stole the pun from the opening line!
"I have to start by being BRUTALLY honest with you..."[Emphasis Added]
Alex @ Oct 13th 2009 4:38PM
Erluti, did you REALLY just say that?
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 13th 2009 5:01PM
Brutal pun Erluti.
Wait a second...

Viking @ Oct 13th 2009 5:25PM
Destructoid can't kill the metal
Metal will live on
Joystiq tried to kill the metal
But they failed as they were smite to the ground
copa @ Oct 13th 2009 3:06PM
Too bad. I'll be getting this, but I had higher hopes.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 13th 2009 3:06PM
Definitely borrowing it.
Let's see if Randy Nelson is vilified for criticizing the mediocre combat as much as those of us who commented on it in the demo were.
Reuben @ Oct 13th 2009 3:08PM
Speaking as someone who bore witness to the ridiculous comments on the Demons' Souls review I'm going to go ahead and say: yes, probably.
BananaBoat @ Oct 13th 2009 3:29PM
Some of us were holding out hope that the combat in the demo was only a small slice of the combat in the full game. Unfortunately, it seems like the combat in the demo was indicative of how the combat works throughout the rest of the game (obviously with much more of an RTS emphasis).
If it weren't for the buy 2 get 1 free game sale going on right now, I'd have to reconsider buying BL. Since I've worked out a way to get it for free though, there really isn't a downside, even if the game doesn't live up to the potential (at least it isn't Spore-level awful).
MarnBeast @ Oct 13th 2009 4:35PM
Where's that sale?
BananaBoat @ Oct 13th 2009 6:21PM
Toys R Us
Buy 2 games, and get any 1 game of equal or lesser value for free. Doesn't apply to pre-orders.
GiggMan @ Oct 13th 2009 3:06PM
Ooooh oooooh.....
Randy you gone get it!
*Thats also what I thought by the way, I wasn't too impressed by the demo*
JACK @ Oct 13th 2009 3:07PM
This game is awesome! I like it, the multiplayer is fun as hell too! I might of missed some stuff BUT, a second run on the game is on the way! I was a little disappointed on finding glitches this far off, but nothing major. The game is still solid and I don't mind the extra trophies!
nighttime @ Oct 13th 2009 3:14PM
Thanks for the contrasting opinion! I loved the demo and will get this after borderlands and uncharted 2 and whichever game decides to rape my wallet!
JACK @ Oct 14th 2009 1:00AM
lol just noticed I was excited when I typed that, I wish I could edit (*hint hint joystiq)
The point is though it's a great game nonetheless. I would give it a 10 if it weren't for EA's involvement in the game. My view on EA doesn't matter though cuz this game is awesome.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 13th 2009 3:07PM
Still hoping for the best here. Non-niche games just don't appeal to me much anymore.
jynxycat @ Oct 13th 2009 4:11PM
Man, you're so underground and edgy!
Kamizar @ Oct 13th 2009 4:20PM
I dont think you understand what the word niche means.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 13th 2009 6:23PM
OH yeah you are so cool, I'll bet you just get home and play some Guitar Hero.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 14th 2009 1:41AM
...uh, ok? Am I supposed to apologize for being more hyped about something like Brutal Legend than I am, say, Modern Warfare 2 (which, admittedly, I am keenly interested in)?
That may have been a poor usage of the word "niche," I will admit. Perhaps I should have said that I take a greater interest in games that bear few similarities to existing titles.
You people are an odd bunch.
Ostentaneous @ Oct 13th 2009 3:08PM
What? It's not the game you hoped it would be? You think it sucks? rrraaaAAAAAGGGGGEEEE!!!!!!!!!
/end sarcasm
I'm about two hours into it and so far it's been great. My wife has been watching me play and we've both been laughing a lot.
HeXeN @ Oct 13th 2009 3:08PM
So the review basically says that the game is not worth the $60 price tag but it's a good pick up at 40 or 30(That's at least what I interpreted of the review).
Freak Mojo @ Oct 13th 2009 3:15PM
And this is why I have no problem getting it from the TRU deal which puts it at roughly $45 between the 3 games I've been wanting and would have picked up anyway :)
Burnflare @ Oct 13th 2009 3:09PM
IGN gave this a 9/10. Guess you can't please everyone.
CheeziePotato [Has finally become a Super Saiyan] @ Oct 13th 2009 3:16PM
I don't like IGN reviews, they overrated lots of games. They review games based on how the reviewer liked it, not very in-depth. Gamespot reviews are the great, but Metacritic is the best.
GiggMan @ Oct 13th 2009 3:25PM
They also rate games according to how much backlash they think they may or may not receive. I am really starting to like joystiqs reviews though. You come away with a sense of what the reviewer thought of the game without a score attached.
The only one I questioned so far was the Batman AA review, I didn't think it was as good (quite good though) as joystiq hyped it up to be.
CheeziePotato [Has finally become a Super Saiyan] @ Oct 13th 2009 3:32PM
Yeah, Batman AA was awesome, but Joystiq fell in love with that game.I really don't like IGN, their site is full of advertisements. X-Play reviews are also very good.
