Sony Aino phone launches today with limited PS3 Remote Play capabilities
Let's get this out of the way at the top: No, Sony's Aino phone, which touts limited PS3 Remote Play functionality, can't access any of the PSN or PSP games you may have hoped it would. However, a recent Playstation.Blog post revealed the crosstalk capabilities imbued within the mobile device (which hit store shelves today) -- while it may lack ludo-logical punch, it's packing some impressive multimedia tools.
After registering your Aino with your PS3, you'll be able to use your phone to access the XMB, browse the internet, watch any non-DRM'd media on your console, send and receive PSN messages, shop in the PlayStation Store and watch TV shows using the PlayTV service. Best of all, you can use your phone to turn your PS3 on and off, which should prove handy when you attempt to convince your roommate that your entertainment center is haunted.

I understand it will never happen for obvious reasons, but I'd pay for a Remote Play app for my iPhone.
Extinction @ Oct 13th 2009 7:12PM
I would too, and I own a PSP
mahouneko @ Oct 13th 2009 10:29PM
I thought BlazBlue supports Remote Play on the PSP?
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 13th 2009 2:33PM
So can you do this through wi-fi miles away? If not I don't see the point.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 13th 2009 2:46PM
Ummmmm its a Cell phone....You can do it anywhere you have a strong enough Data signal from what I have read
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 13th 2009 3:20PM
Well yeah, but you still hve to have your PS3 through wi-fi. You answered my question nonetheless.
seamonkey420 @ Oct 13th 2009 3:43PM
come on
duh, you need to have your ps3 online/connected to the internet.
what do you think the ps3 also has a builtin direct link to the internet or its own cell broadcast tower?
common sense people, common sense...
End User @ Oct 13th 2009 3:46PM
Uh, no, you just have to have your PS3 hooked up to the net. Doesn't matter if it's wired or wireless.
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 13th 2009 4:06PM
No, I didn't know if it was through Bluetooth or not or if it had to be on the same IP address.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 13th 2009 4:08PM
you never used the Remote play feature on the PSP have you?
I stay in Greensboro, NC......I was on Orlando, FL and was playing Pixeljunk Monsters via remote play....
so yea the PS3 has to be connected to the internet.
Solace @ Oct 13th 2009 5:43PM
pwnd
had to say it
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 13th 2009 9:27PM
So now "getting pwned" is asking a question and getting it answered? Nice.
gotFrosty @ Oct 13th 2009 2:33PM
So why is Sony not making a PSP phone? PSP Go was a way better idea for sure. Hey Sony, how do I apply?
DangerMouse @ Oct 13th 2009 5:15PM
Because it would do worse than the PSPgo will.
CrashSpyro123 @ Oct 13th 2009 5:57PM
Nobody wants a phone in their PSP.
metallimaniac @ Oct 13th 2009 2:34PM
haha...i've never used these features on my PSP, yet, i still want this phone :)
i like my sony ericssons :)
NaeemTHM @ Oct 13th 2009 2:41PM
I think the Ericsson makes a solid cellphone, but I don't like the Symbian OS.
ugotamesij @ Oct 13th 2009 3:24PM
The Aino is nice, was just in a shopping mall and popped into a phone shop to have a quick look. It looks to be very similar to the C905 except a little narrower, plus of course a touchscreen and all the PS-related bits. I don't think the camera has a cover though so I'd be a little worried about scratching the glass.
The Satio, also just out, is a beast - absolutely huge. Looks nice but I've heard the real-time use doesn't match the impressive spec sheet, and thus it runs a bit slow.
More on topic, as I don't have a PS3 I'm not really interested in the Aino, but then it's not targeted at me. I'd like to second whoever called for a Zune HD phone with capabilities to link with my 360 and XBLA titles though.
master811 @ Oct 13th 2009 3:29PM
@NaeemTHM
The Aino doesn't run Symbian, it's Sony Ericsson's own OS - the same they use in all their other non-smart phones.
metallimaniac @ Oct 13th 2009 5:45PM
I have the C905 @themo'. It's a great phone and i'm glad it doesnt have the touch screen in it. My other SE phones tht have had touch screen seem to malfunction a lot :(
Seems like it could be the downfall of this phone too...
playcrackthesky @ Oct 13th 2009 10:51PM
ugotamesij,
I bought the phone believing it was touch screen, this however is not the case. All menus and such need to be done through the circular button and all numbers typed are through the keypad.
The phone does however have very limited touchscreen capabilities, all media is controlled by touchscreen. So music, movie players etc are touchscreen.
Meh @ Oct 14th 2009 5:27AM
If it has a touchscreen, it's a toy, not a phone
PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Oct 13th 2009 2:34PM
thats cool i guess. I don't need a new phone nor do the perks justify a purchase for one, but at least they got the basics down.
Vcize @ Oct 13th 2009 2:42PM
Sending/receiving PSN messages and using the PSN store from your phone is pretty f'ing neat. MS talked about this kind of stuff with Live anywhere years ago and still hasn't actually done anything with it. Kudos to Sony for getting the ball rolling.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 13th 2009 2:43PM
Sony phones are actually quite nice. I miss the days when my dandy w300i was fully functional... now I'm stuck with a piece of shit Pantech phone. Piece. Of. Shit.
Allow me to reiterate: Pantech phones are synonymous with shit.
marauder30 (psn: darthmilasmentor, xbl: huskerblackshrt) @ Oct 13th 2009 2:53PM
Or maybe for when your roommate has no respect for your shit, and leaves your PS3 on all day/night while you're at work.
Electro Poof [Super Nintendo IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING - Now Only $29.99] @ Oct 13th 2009 2:56PM
"Sony Aino phone"
I don't know why, but that made me laugh.
Extinction @ Oct 13th 2009 3:02PM
Maybe cause "Sony ai no Phone" means Sony loves the phone, or Sony phone of love?
Jeebus @ Oct 13th 2009 3:10PM
Maybe because you're a hill-billy?
Rudy van DiSarzio, Jazz fusion guitarist. (I go by many names...) @ Oct 13th 2009 3:48PM
I guess that the SDF didn't like your comment Electro.
Extinction @ Oct 13th 2009 7:13PM
Um, the SDF website is actually run by a 360 fanatic.
mahouneko @ Oct 13th 2009 10:32PM
@Extinction:
Wait, seriously? I never bothered with the SDF so I have no friggin' clue as to who is running it.
Nate Addison @ Oct 13th 2009 2:57PM
Is this phone carrier specific?
Rhamsey @ Oct 13th 2009 2:59PM
This is a step in the right direction. Now all I want is a zune HD phone that can play my arcade games.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 13th 2009 2:59PM
if it wasn't for the OS on SE phones they would be a lot more favorable I believe....lucky for them they have some Android phones in the works I hear
Mo @ Oct 14th 2009 10:51AM
if it had android, id be in.. even if only for the mobile psn messaging. Can you send psn messages on a psp? I swore to boycott the psp until they put DUAL analogs on it... but its getting every harder to do....
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 14th 2009 11:06AM
yea you can....via remote play....same as with this phone
Ashitaka @ Oct 13th 2009 3:03PM
Ok, so it's no key feature, but still something very nice for a PS3 owner to have.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Oct 13th 2009 3:06PM
It's not much but at least it's something. Still waiting on that Live Anywhere initiative Microsoft...
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Oct 13th 2009 3:08PM
well im only supposed to have postive things to say, in order to be allowed to comment on any sony forum according to j#5 & mahoankoe(spelling wrong sorry), but...
why couldnt they have combined this and the GO and just made a PSP-PHONE ?
i think that is something we all would want ?
this and the GO just seem like 2 projects that may fail and were so close to being very special and maybe could have been combined to actually make an 'iphone/ipod' killer.
heres hoping sony is making it and going to release it next month without a warning...
Space @ Oct 13th 2009 3:21PM
would it have UMD? if it didn't would you still complain?
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Oct 13th 2009 3:38PM
i wouldnt expect a PHONE to have a UMD drive.... that would be very hard to do in a small forum factor.
hell i like my zune and 360 but complain about many things about those devices also...
i dont like the GO, but price has more to do with that than anything else. $ 150 i wouldnt have anything to complain about.
i dont like that the dsi doesnt allow for GBA gamecards....
cant we complain about things we dont like or would rather have ?
or do we need to accept everything that is in front of us ?
how do you think we eventually get what we want?
sonicspike41 @ Oct 13th 2009 4:57PM
Well I gave you a +1 to get you normal again, though you could've done without the name dropping.
I can see why this doesn't play games, it has no keypad and all current games would need to be ported to work for this.
I can see why the PSP Go doesn't have a phone, I just don't think it's "there" or "ready" yet. Compared to something like the iPhone this could be a nice alternative for the gaming market (this = PSP GoPhone, or just GoPhone). I just think that this late into the PSP's life cycle it would be better if they waiting until the PSP2 to add in phone support.
Make one a button+touchscreen gaming+media only device, and then for say $50 more make another SKU that has all the capabilities of a phone.
Then offer a trade in program where if you trade in the phone-less version, you get so much percent taken off of the phone-enabled version!
Space @ Oct 13th 2009 5:16PM
It just blows my mind that people continue to complain about the go. despite sony supporting the oldermodels more than ever. Why is no one praising them for giving us more options. why does everybody have to dwell on the negative things?
I think this is a decent phone it's not for me but fuck it's another option. I just use a quad-band unlocked phone, because I travel a lot, I need something that can handle sim cards from different countries. Also since I travel a lot, I don't think $250 is a terrible deal for the a game system as small as the Go. If I was just playing the PSP in my house yeah, I'd go with the 3000. I'm just glad they give me the options. It's not like they owe me anything. I've never done anything for them.
metallimaniac @ Oct 13th 2009 5:52PM
This is a PHONE tht connects to the PSN...why would you want a PSP integrated into a phone (or vice versa)?
Surely, if you're wanting your phone to play PSP games, then you must have a PSP...
...i know i wouldnt want (or need) my PSP to phone people.
Also the reason why i haven't bought an iPhone...i have a phone, and an iPod. I don't need them moulded into 1
BooBoo @ Oct 13th 2009 3:19PM
Dude I'm pretty sure they'll wait till PSP2 to add phone that way they can add all tha stuff people been bitchin bout lk 2nd analog, touch screen'and most likely kick ass graphics!it's the only smart way to make cash at least!
Space @ Oct 13th 2009 3:23PM
$900 for the PSP2
Feist77 @ Oct 13th 2009 3:32PM
Why didn't they make it where you could download a blu-ray movie (scaled down) for watching on the go?
Union @ Oct 13th 2009 3:55PM
this is totally a guess but i think Sony's going to go the Ipod touch/Iphone route with a PSP 2/PS Phone.
