Canadian PS3 Fallout 3 save files apparently not transferring for GOTY edition
A couple of threads over at Bethesda Softwork's forums reveal that Canadian PS3 owners are having a problem getting their previous Capital Wasteland save files to be recognized by the newly released Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition. Speculation by forum posters about the cause of the issue seems to revolve around either improper/outdated patching or that the GOTY edition isn't compatible with a version of the game sold in the region.
We've been in contact with Bethesda this morning, which is aware of the problem and is currently trying to figure out precisely what the issue is before it makes a statement. We'll update as soon as we learn more.

I'd have to imagine they'd be able to patch it? Gad that'd be horrible. I'm assuming many of these folks affected might still have their other copy of Fallout 3, annnnnd the rest probably don't because they traded it in for the GOTY edition. Poor kids.
BlackDove @ Oct 14th 2009 11:11AM
It's actually probably the patches that are making it incompatible.
Game's been updated many times over over different platforms, who knows how many iterations the PS3 version went between the old regular and GOTY versions.
Probably a lot between accommodating five expansions and whatever bug fixes they quashed along the way.
Ballistic H @ Oct 14th 2009 2:31PM
Actually, Canadians and Americans are getting the EXACT same game. The ONLY difference would be in Quebec where the games are required to reprint the covers into bilingual ones.
Obie @ Oct 14th 2009 10:23AM
Goddamn, does Bathesda EVER double check their $#i7??
LegendaryRedass @ Oct 14th 2009 11:27AM
If you think they're bad, imagine if Epic had done Fallout 3.
Leathersoup @ Oct 14th 2009 11:33AM
Wow folks, it's not like they planned for this to happen. They're working on it.
Viney @ Oct 14th 2009 5:16PM
Leathersoup... the point is, you test and work on fixing this stuff before you accept people's hard earned money for it. Other company's operate that way just fine. It's nice that they're at least working on patching it and It'd be one thing if it was a minor bug fix, but this has been standard operating procedure for Bethesda for awhile now and it's turning into a reputation. How do you miss a bug that affects an entire region?
We all know every company runs into hurdles with glitches and bugs (that's just the nature of software), but at this rate Bethesda needs to start patching their internal development and quality assurance processes instead of constantly having to patch their final products.
squeehunter @ Oct 14th 2009 7:01PM
That was my EXACT thought op.
Ranben @ Oct 14th 2009 10:24AM
I had wanted to trade in my copy of Fallout 3 and use the money to help me buy the GOTY edition. I hope they fix this.
Tim Parsons @ Oct 14th 2009 10:25AM
I always thought we got the exact same version of games. Oh well don't matter to me I got it at launch originally and then picked up all the DLC asit came out. all I have left is to finish off Point Lookout for 100%
Enduros @ Oct 14th 2009 10:32AM
I'm an American, but I'm really starting to feel for you Canadians. You guys always seem to get the short end of the stick. WTF? I hope Bethesda can get this straightened out soon. There is no excuse for this.
Hey Sony & Bethesda....... Canadian money spends too you know!!!!
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 14th 2009 10:35AM
damn that blows....I'm getting the GoTY edition in a few weeks...if I was a Canadian I'd be livid
butaneko @ Oct 14th 2009 10:47AM
But if you were Canadian you'd be much more laid back, so maybe the two things would cancel each other out.
fundando @ Oct 14th 2009 11:23AM
Ahh Canadian weed.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 14th 2009 11:25AM
lol....I dunno...I know some pretty angry Canadians...I mean have you SEEN Chris Jericho??
Solace @ Oct 15th 2009 2:49AM
Chris Jericho is just a douche bag it has nothing to do with him being Canadian.
shadowhowl1900 @ Oct 14th 2009 10:43AM
is it the disc problem? cause i can go over to the states and buy a copy
CheeziePotato [Has finally become a Super Saiyan] @ Oct 14th 2009 10:52AM
Make sure you bring your passport.
Joel @ Oct 14th 2009 10:47AM
I traded in my original copy months ago when I found out a GOTY edition was coming out. I pre-ordered it and picked it up yesterday, only to have this very problem! Fortunately, the EB games nearest to me was willing to let me return it for a full refund.
I could have waited for a patch, but I just bought back a used copy of the original game and paid for the DLC on PSN. Sucks, but oh well. It's still a great game.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Oct 14th 2009 10:46AM
Can't wait for this. I don't have a save file, I'm starting fresh so all good for me, but if I was Canadian I'd be pissed.
0001 @ Oct 14th 2009 10:48AM
So this problem is only on the PS3 version, okay
Gstaff @ Oct 14th 2009 10:59AM
As mentioned in the article, it's something we're investigating.
@0001, it's only being reported as an issue with the PS3 GOTY in Canada.
develintales667 @ Oct 16th 2009 12:34AM
What I wonder if the save files from different regions are compatible. The only English version I could get my hands on was from Korea (long story), and I was intending to get me the GOTY edition to get my hands on the DLC (as I don't have Korean PSN cards).
Nate Addison @ Oct 14th 2009 11:00AM
lol @ Canada in general

Glad I just got the DLC.
ducttapeBigSexy (PSN&XBL: ducttape12) @ Oct 14th 2009 11:06AM
Planning on picking this up the PS3 version this weekend - thankfully I'll be starting fresh, so hopefully I won't run into any problems.... hopefully...
koehler83 @ Oct 14th 2009 11:09AM
Oh don't you worry. The game's got plenty of other problems to grind your teeth on.
Don't get too comfortable. You'll be getting up to restart your PS3 manually often.
fundando @ Oct 14th 2009 11:25AM
I never had any issues with the game freezing.
Ben @ Oct 14th 2009 10:21PM
Yeah, I hated the constant resets required after you reach the 50 hour mark or so. After 100 hours the game becomes almost unplayable...
Did they fix this in the recent 1.6 patch afterall?
BirukT @ Oct 14th 2009 11:14AM
I actually got the GOTY edition yesterday. I didn't have a save file so that wasn't an issue, but it took forever to start a new game
Corey @ Oct 23rd 2009 6:07PM
well unforunately (in this case) i live in Canada. so can anyone just confirm this with me cause i have the original fallout3 and i cannot download dlc becasue for some reason i never get updates for patching the bugs like the version 1.6.1....so the game of the year addition is fallout3 + the 5 expansions?
HSTRIP @ Oct 14th 2009 11:19AM
I'm Canadian and yes, usually laid back... smoking my weed and playing my Fallout. This sucks. I traded in my original edition as soon as I found out about the GOTY... Bought it yesterday... Hope they fix this shit soon.
Xoonaka @ Oct 14th 2009 11:25AM
Any word on US versions...? I'm going to be devastated if this is true for the US as well...
spikeylee @ Oct 14th 2009 11:40AM
only has to do with the Canadian version, according to the forums over at the official site.
it has to do with an incompatibility issue between US and Canadian versions of the game. i.e. Canadian version of GOTY can't read save files made with the US original version of Fallout 3.
Xoonaka @ Oct 14th 2009 11:43AM
Ah, well that's a relief.. for me at least. Thanks
bluefrog @ Oct 14th 2009 11:32AM
Ack!! I have about 100 hours on the game, and many, many save files (did you know it tops out at 130 files? I hit it) and so I hope they fix this soon. I was one mission away from the original ending of the game when I traded it in. Guess I should go rent the game and finish it the original way, then wait for the patch that'll fix our saves. Annoying.
Gstaff @ Oct 14th 2009 11:35AM
This is not an issue with the US version
theMediaman @ Oct 14th 2009 12:08PM
The Canadian version of the game has free Health packs :P

Can anyone confirm that Xbox 360 saves from Fallout 3 work on the GOTY edition in Canada?
I want to pick up the GOTY edition for 360, but it'd be a huge added benefit if my saves transfer, if not, it's no biggie, likely it'd amount to more achievements to my gamerscore and another play through of one of the greatest games EVER! (I said one of them... don't get your panties in a bunch haters...)
Richards | PSN F4W @ Oct 14th 2009 1:03PM
Man Bethesda is becoming more digusting to me day by day. How bloody long have they withheld the DLC for PS3 owners, even at times denying that it's coming and now that it's finally here, it's a shamble. BUGS GALORE! I do want all the DLC I won't lie, but I'm holding out for a discount or something simply because they do not deserve full price imo for their behaviour >.
HDpurist @ Oct 15th 2009 12:29AM
+1 man, I'm disgusted with Bethesda. They screw their loyal PS3 supporters by taking our money for the initial F3, segregate PS3 fans from themselves, and jump into bed with Microsoft and tout their exclusive expansions. I too have long wanted to play the xpacks, and a year later we finally get them for our PS3, but right off the bat this inexcusable GOTY compatibility problems. Also the game is stuttering or rather the response is slow when advancing on dialog/text moments. In the original F3, advancing on text/dialog was super smooth.
Anyways, just absolutely horrible horrible quality assurance and release verification at Bethesda. They are no doubt a third rate gaming company. Thinking that Bethesda got all the bugs and crap fixed in our PS3 GOTY edition over the past year, I feel completely suckered now after having purchased this garbage.
Bye bye Bethesda, black listed....oh yeah, and up yours *ssholes.
crackp1pe @ Oct 14th 2009 2:42PM
So I keep thinking that I'm being too much of a cheapskate lately, as I've been buying and playing my games about 6 months to a year after they come out in order to save money.
Then I read another article like this and realize that there's another compelling reason to wait - the bugfixes - and it makes me sad.
Note to devs: if you want us to pay top dollar and get it before you drop the price, make sure it works properly on day 1. It's just stupid to pay full price and end up getting a worse experience for it than someone who picks it up later for less and gets all the bugfixes that should have been in on top of it.
GuardianBob @ Oct 14th 2009 7:52PM
I refused to get Fallout 3 because Bethesda decided to withhold DLC on non-Microsoft platforms for so long. (Screw exclusive DLC.) I may pickup the GOTY edition once it's been out long enough to iron out some of the bugs. Disappointed to hear about these issues, even if it won't affect me.
sc00typuff @ Oct 14th 2009 9:31PM
oh no, they'll have to play one of the best games ever from the beginning.
rjlagrone @ Oct 15th 2009 1:50PM
just to let you know, i just popped in my US GOTY version and my old save worked just fine, it popped up telling me each new mission and now Im off to do Op Anch. first
cathy @ Oct 15th 2009 2:50PM
i,m not really an expert, but i guess i know why it's not working.
what most of you dont realise, is that for most games, it's not only the manual that is in french. The game itself (often but not all the time) will be in french when put into a french system, and in english iof put in an english system.
My copies of GoW for exemple even if they look english, and will play in english in an xbox set to english, play with french voices and text in my xbox, same for IL2 in my PS3...
what seems to be the trouble here, is that they send 2 version of the original game. a bilingual one and a english only one. and they send an english only copy of the GotY. So people who have the bilingual version (but they might know it because in their ps3, it play in english) cannot use they save games in the english version of the GotY.
X360 owner doesnt have that trouble because the GotY edition of x360 is bilingual like the original game...
which is weird anyway because technically, they should have provide a bilingual copy to be legal, and the way they did it, it's illegal for them to sell the ps3 version...
