If Crytek's, like, next next-gen-ready CryEngine 3 performs even half as well as advertised, then the tears are gonna flow -- tears of joy. Imagine an engine through which a developer, using a single editor and dev PC, can create and test a game for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 ... at the same time. (You don't even have to imagine it, actually; there's a video after the break!) That's the picture Crytek's painting as it today releases its third iteration of the CryEngine for license to third-party developers.
As promised in the press release: CryEngine 3 features real-time conversion and optimization of assets and cross-platform changes that "significantly" reduce the risk (and headache) of multiplatform development. So, in layman's terms, it renders really good graphix -- even if you have no idea how to develop on PS3.
"With its scalable graphics and computation it is next-gen-ready and with new features like CryEngine 3 Live Create the best choice for game developers and companies developing serious games applications alike," trumpets Crytek boss Cevat Yerli. "It is the only game engine solution that enables real-time development and can ensure teams are able to maximize their own creativity, save budget and create greater gaming experiences."
Okay. So what's it cost?

So how many FPS will I get a nVidia 9800GT (I'm getting ~30 on Crysis/CryEngine 2)? And how much is the GPU to run this fairly well going to cost me?

Five hundred and ninety nine dollars.
Seriously, though, you're probably going to need a new card. I've seen 1GB ATi and nVidia cards run Crysis at 60FPS, so you shouldn't have to buy the top-of-the-line card to get a good experience with CryEngine 3.

If it's exactly like the demo, then I want the games now. With cross platform play like that though... I just KNOW it's going to compromise on something... because that's what's happened before... and I don't want to be hurt by hype again.
So I'll wait for games based off it for the ps3 to pop out instead.

How will Crysis 2 work being on the consoles, with those gamers being unfamiliar with the story of Crysis? Give a recap of the story in 10 minutes or fuck up and do a side-story like FEAR 2?
I'd like to see the difference in the PC and console versions. Don't care about the consoles, but I hope that more PC gamers can play it on older rigs and laptops.

I still have a problem with this. My first complaint is that, the more I play it, Xbox 360 games feel exactly what they're developed of and that's a PC game. In my own opinion, I think the PlayStation 3 has a signature feel that feels like a console still. Where as it seems games that are developed for the Xbox 360, feel like a PC game. So why a 360 instead of a supped up PC?
My second complaint is that really, multi-platform games cripple the the PlayStation 3. Its entirely true. Look at games like Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, MAG, God of War III and especially Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
Specifically Metal Gear Solid 4 and now Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. MGS 4 uses a Blu-ray Dual Layer 50GB Disc. Uncharted 2 uses 25GB single layer (still filling the disc). What does Gears of War 2 uses with all is high tech gadgetry? Only about 6.7GB. And I think Gears of War and Gears of War 2 push the 360 to its limits. That's over a 19GB difference in content for a game. So much more space that can really show a games potential, and when a game is developed multi-platform, its forgotten and flushed down the toilet and PS3 gamers are left with crap. But ITS PROVEN! That when a developer uses that memory to their advantage, it produces an EXCLUSIVE that smothers any exclusive Microsoft has on their Xbox.

1) I swear to god you've copied and pasted this exact reply, nearly word-for-word, in another posted response, elsewhere on joystiq...
2) So, bluray allows for bigger, badder, longer CUTSCENES: it's already been established (by comments by developers, including Carmack, and evidenced by simple visual comparisons of textures from THE BEST QUALITY PS3 exclusives to even the most average console-to-PC ports) that the PS3's graphics memory allocation doesn't allow enough headroom to actually use those oft-vaunted GIGS of additional bluray storage space to stream HIGHER QUALITY TEXTURES into the games...
Uncharted 2? Smoke and mirrors, kid... smoke and mirrors.. oh.. and hype...

*sighs* LAME...
This announcement is no reason to rejoice--this is simply ANOTHER example of PC gaming AI and graphics potential dumbed-down/held back for consoles...
This is NO revolution... Nothing to see here... We've already been through this: (i know the following link isn't "scientific" but it's an empirical example that confirms what Crytek said about the current crop of consoles YEARS ago--that, basically, they struggle to push what amount to MEDIUM settings on PC)
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/16/cryengine-3-equal-to-cryengine-2-medium-settings-reveals-comp/
This engine heads out of the gate CRIPPLED: No DX11 support--which means, no advanced tessellation, no direct compute, eroded multi-threading and no Shader Model 5.0... Basically, until Crytek updates or extends CE3, PC gamers will be saddled with another generation of new games that fail to achieve the level of quality accessible by current PC hardware. Moreover, all the console kids are screaming, "Wow! this is so (beautiful/amazing/extraordinary/genericallygiddysuperlative)!" while I'm lookin' at a slightly lower quality of graphics than what I experienced TWO YEARS AGO in the FIRST Crysis game!
Even worse, the console kiddies STILL don't seem to realize how much their pretty pretty PS3 screens are inferior to what the PC is generating: It's embarrassing to watch these SONY & MS broodlings bicker about what lighting effects are missing from each other's screens, and which one loads a fraction of a second faster [in comments from the original 3-way CE3 demo], and how powerful their little consoles CAN be, when it's painfully obvious [again, from the high-res of the original CE3 demo] that the track-light's bloom halos, the environmental HDR, the overall texture quality, LOD and draw distance is all galaxies better on the PC screen, WHILE the PC is powering the whole WYSIWYP program!
[Another thing you guys might want to notice, is that the most advanced (prettiest, most mind blowing) screens are labeled "NEXT GEN READY" which means, NO, you WILL NOT see those graphics/playability/effects on your PS3 OR your 360... ]
---------------
As an aside: I see a number of complaints about UE3's "pop-in" textures. But, honestly, after witnessing the CryEngine 2 "optimizations" first hand [so-called improvements resulting in Warhead's patently AWFUL streaming texture scheme and good deal of pop-up shrubbery nonsense that made the game look, in some instances, LESS advanced than Crysis], I can't say I expect CE3's console-consession "optimizations" to deliver results that are exactly worlds better than UE3 ...

The only thing holding the PC back is piracy. Oh, and development costs that are nearly impossible to recoup unless the game is a mega-smash-hit 10 million seller in the first 30 days. Oh..and stale game development, which rehashes genre after genre worse than EA rehashes Madden games.
PC gaming is dead and you can thank all your WoW brethren for it. Downvote now, but you know in your heart it's true and that's what compels you to click the thumbs down.

@RKN - thanks, and agreed... you're right, sadly, the money is where the audience is, and right now, the audiences is a collection of gits...like this useedems person heh heh heh
@useedems - "Oh, and development costs that are nearly impossible to recoup unless the game is a mega-smash-hit 10 million seller in the first 30 days."
Are you kidding?!? DEVELOPMENT COSTS are what's killing the PC industry?? CD Projekt, Valve and Stardok have all released quality "hardcore" gaming titles on PC in the past year and have had no trouble recouping their losses. Hell, even after an initial poor showing, and much whining and moaning by Crytek, Crysis eventually sold over 1M copies on PC alone and more than made its bank--in fact, the only REAL issue with Crysis's sales was Crytek's utter HUBRIS...but that's a whole 'nother discussion...
Do you realize how much money goes into developing a console game--I mean, apart from nickel and diming like, "MS tax," bluray royalties, SDK support and quality assurance submission?? Do you realize how many 3rd party companies have had to EXTEND development time/spend MORE money in an effort to wrangle the ("intentionally difficult" *Kazuo Hirai) PS3 architecture?? The REASON most games are now MULTIPLATFORM is so the developers can have a better chance of recouping losses/make a profit...
Let's talk numbers, shall we? GTAIV took $100 million to make.. that means the BREAK EVEN point for the game (at $50 a pop) is 2 million sales...right? Well guess what? even as the top selling PS3 game of '08, GTAIV only sold 1.89 million copies on that console--a number which, while wildly astronomical in general terms, means that, if the developer's revenue was based on PS3 sales alone, the developers would have LOST MONEY in '08...Now, I realize a budget like $100M isn't typical for a game, but the point is: ALL high-profile, high-budget games, by their nature, require MASSIVE sales to recoup losses--regardless of platform!
Moreover, (and i'm really sick of having to make this point over and over again, you kids really need to listen [er..or.. uh.. read]) apart from Konami's MGS4, PS3's top exclusives are comin' out of DEV houses that are OWNED by (Naughty Dog, Guerilla, etc) or are given massive subsistence by (Quantic Dream, et. al.) SONY... [MS is guilty of the same shyte, the straight BOUGHT Bungie in the middle of their production of a PC title and turned it into an Xbox project] So, in the console market, unless you're on the Console maker's payroll, or are already a massive development house, you can pretty much forget relying on any single console platform to pay the bills on a game with a good-sized budget...
>> "Oh..and stale game development, which rehashes genre after genre worse than EA rehashes Madden games."
RIiiigghhht... because ALL innovative game development begins on consoles--they've totally got the rehash problem all worked out over there, even as you use MADDEN (of all games!) -- a game that hasn't had a PC release in 2 years! --as the, poorly chosen, subject of your comparative illustration... Cherry, mate...
That said...to be fair, useedems, I don't wholly disagree with you... there ARE problems with PC development: for instance, tech is moving far too fast for developers to keep up-- Although, honestly, that's a "nature of the beast issue," it's ALWAYS been that way... in the old days, companies like Origin and id used to actually EMBRACE such rapid technological shifts... now it seems devs, in general, are fighting just to "stay alive" [or in some cases, remain very comfortable], which, unfortunately, means sticking to "sure fire" sets of parameters: Consoles are SAFE, don't require a much "extra-curricular" product support and, typically, guarantee a potential install base (translation: easy money)...
And, you're right obsessive MMO-ers --and Pirates-- are causing far more than their fair share of headaches for the industry. However, at the end of the day, PC gaming is far from dead (it isn't even dying)--and as long as solid developers continue to push the platform, PC will remain THE ultimate gaming platform...
