"And we've continued to evolve Live with XBLA and 1 versus 100, Lifetime coming, and we'll do the same thing with Natal"

What does this mean? Lifetime network to Xbox?!

Or a lifetime membership?

Probably the Lifetime network.

Food Network can't be far behind...

If it's a lifetime membership, I hope it costs *clears throat* FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE DOLLARS.

@Chris D. How does THAT make sense at all?

XBLA they added to live. 1 vs 100 they added to live, "Lifetime Coming"

It's a list of additions, that in no way says

"This is what we've done over the lifetime of the live network"

They'll probably put somewhere on the box "Natal Enabled" like the old LIVE bar.

Still, as a reserved person, I'd prefer Sony's motion wand to making a fool of myself in front of a camera.

Great interview didn't expect him to go over as much as he did but, after reading it you can tell the direction Microsoft is headed in. From relying as much on Third-Party support to creating it's own First-Party titles that can keep the console going on it's own. Plus Microsoft has been doing a lot to improve their relations with Third-Party developers.

Sounds pretty great to me...

For real, console wars aside, Microsoft seriously has the best direction as a company as far as making great games for people who love them.

It's the reason we put up with the RROD and all the other bullshit this hardware platform has given us!

i've studied a lot of marketing,
and with a lot of companies, regardless of how good they are
you can still say without doubt that in their heart, money is all that matters
even after all the phsycographics that companies do, pretending to help world vision and what not, with most companies you can say its about the money.

but with microsoft recently, i dont know why, but i just havent been able to say that
for some reason i get the strange and erie feeling,
that they care more about their impact on the world's technology
than the technology's impact on their wealth.
and unfortunately, that cant be said for many companies

with the zune and the 360, the new desktop and mobile windows platforms,
although there are more than obvious attempts at promoting product for profit
sometimes you really think to yourself, they're changing the world.

maybe its because they already have enough money,
maybe its the good people at Microsoft Research that actually care,
maybe its that Microsoft is the type of company started by someone who owns the biggest non porfit organization in the world

It's interesting that Phil is embracing the comparison between the rollout of Natal, and the Rollout of XBox Live.

The thing to remember about Live is that it was pretty janky because it was introuduced midway through a console cycle. Some titles supported it, some didn't. It often felt like an awkwardly tacked on product, or a beta service.

XBox Live did not become the big ole pile of awesome-sauce that it is today until the XBox 360 came out, and the console was designed from the ground up to integrate with and support these services.

So anyway, I'm looking forward to Natal when it rolls out as part of the next console cycle.

All of Microsoft's console ventures have been like that. The original Xbox was just a $5 billion beta for 360, "Xbox" Live was just a forerunner for "Xbox 360" Live, as it were. The original Duke controller against the S controller.

Natal will follow the same path, i think. Not to say it will be outright bad, but it will be somewhat awkward, until they can redesign hardware to properly incorporate it.

@ Dr. Bradwart. Pretty much. Microsoft learns by doing (also called "learning the hard way"). Not especially good from a financial perspective, but they've refined their products over the decades by this model. Last generation, they learned that you had to own the rights to the hardware components of your own machine, and they also learned that using what were basically off-the-shelf PC components was a bad idea, both of which they corrected with 360. They learned, the hard way, how to slowly build presence in Japan. Now they're learning the importance of thorough QA testing

None of this (except the Japan thing), really has bearing on their software front, but that's how things go.

Typical PR interview. Lots of words but very few bits of facts. Ok, what facts do we get about Natal:

1. Most of Microsoft Game Studio developers are seriously experimenting with Natal. That's good.

2. In the world there are no games with Natal yet. But everyone is experimenting with it.

3. Rare is working hard on Natal projects.

4. Natal will be fully compatible with XBox 360.

Nothing new, actually. All of this info was in the news already about a month or more )

Wow, I can't believe I just read all of those unabashed lies and exaggerations of grandeur. Do they give out a Nobel prize for douchebaggery? I guess the kids eat this stuff up. Corporate vice president speak translations below:

"You know, before Live, games were solitary experiences."
= Phil gives a big f-u to the Dreamcast and, you know, PCs.

"How many projects is Microsoft working on that qualify as full Natal games?"
"To talk about a number right now, not only to just dodge the question, but it's also difficult because... But I want to say it's not really about the number of games."
= Right now there aren't many non-ball-smacking Natal games far into development despite the developer list. Most developers will wait until launch or near launch before committing fully. They want to see if people will care about this thing enough to justify their investment.

"What about the Peter Jackson project? Why did the bottom fall out there?"
"For us, when we step back and we start looking at the Halo franchise, we want to make sure that we're ... You brought up the term earlier, we're not kind of over-saturating the market with Halo content."
= Peter Jackson backed out for various reasons including the Neill Blomkamp Halo movie debacle.

"Speaking of Rare, what are they up to these days?"
"Well, obviously, Rare was instrumental to shipping Avatars in a NXE."
= Rare is still being punished for their shitty post-Nintendo work. MS has no idea what to do with them, but they paid so much money to acquire them, they've got to give them something to do.

"Yeah, but should there be another platform in the future, do you think it will be easy to just shift all the stuff that you've done for Natal over to that system, much like you shifted Live from Xbox 1 to Xbox 360?"
"Yeah. Well, that is the different world we're in today, which I think is an advantage for us gamers; that as different technologies come online, you can actually find a way of moving..."
= Backwards compatibility is dead. The asshats at Sony and Nintendo have now committed to that in order to screw customers and maximize profits. MS will do what they do best and crib from other tech company ideas.

"We realized Microsoft is a platform company. We're a software company. We can build hardware, but at the core we build operating systems and experiences..."
= They realized this after their track record with this generation's hardware reliability became an embarassment that infuriated millions of gamers worldwide.

"I think the opportunity for us as an industry for both first and first party, is how do we make the overall audience bigger? How do we make it larger? Today, the controllers are barriers to some people. We know that."
= So did Nintendo. That was their exact philosophy circa 2006.
