Left 4 Dead 2 boycott abandoned 4 demise
The 41,000 member group formed to boycott Left 4 Dead 2 has reached its end, following Valve's pledge to add more content to the original game (which is already being made good on). As of October 21st, the collective will be disbanded after succeeding in its quest "to get Valve's attention and have them support original L4D."
Fresh from his free studio tour (courtesy of Valve), group co-founder "Agent of Chaos" wrote, "Our goal wasn't to steer people away from L4D2, it was to get Valve's attention and have them support original L4D." So, by utilizing a boycott that wasn't intended to keep people from buying a game, you managed to force Valve to do something they certainly would have done anyway.
Dear Internet: You are getting predictable.

NOBODY STOPS A CHICAGO TED-LED BOYCOTT!
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 14th 2009 2:20PM
Oh fuck them, they all would've bought the game anyway.
captainprotonx @ Oct 14th 2009 2:20PM
I think this can be filed under "publicity stunt".
NinjaJesus @ Oct 14th 2009 2:33PM
You sir...are a Negative Nancy.
MaxShrek @ Oct 14th 2009 5:54PM
I was wondering about that myself. Still, it's not a bad idea
Stevetrop @ Oct 14th 2009 8:25PM
Yea you should become a Positive Parrot
Krystian @ Oct 14th 2009 2:21PM
Eh I was a member of this group, but then Valve had a firesale and I picked up a L4D2 preorder for 33.75. I'll pay that price for a glorified expansion pack with a smile. They won me over.
URM0MLIK3SME @ Oct 14th 2009 2:26PM
I wish I could find a deal like that for the 360...why would you boycott a great game in the first place? If they came out with L4D 3, I would gladly fork over the money if its a great game.
Monica Dickey @ Oct 14th 2009 2:21PM
but boycott and petition websites are so fun! the rich community, the common goal... so inspiring.
URM0MLIK3SME @ Oct 14th 2009 2:24PM
How many times do they actually work??
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 14th 2009 2:28PM
The assholes that sign over and over with names like 'Penis' and think it's funny.
Oh online petitions, I loathe you so much.
Monica Dickey @ Oct 14th 2009 2:45PM
oh I'm pretty sure they never work. who takes the internet that seriously? lol
and don't tell me if you see a petition for something and 100 entries of the name 'penis' it isn't at least a little funny
Dale @ Oct 14th 2009 3:45PM
I am more amused that someone with the surname "Dickey" is talking about the comedy prospects of a petition full of "penis". (No offence). :D
Herlock @ Oct 14th 2009 2:22PM
Sissy!

"Our goal wasn't to steer people away from L4D2"
I'm not sure these people actually understand the meaning of the word "boycott" here.
Derick @ Oct 14th 2009 2:49PM
This whole thing was disarmed from the beginning. All the 'boycotters' would have bought the game anyway and Valve was going to support the game anyway. We're left with a hollow threat and an obvious course of action.
Is this whole thing not just a waste of time?
whylekat @ Oct 14th 2009 5:33PM
Obviously not a waste for those fat jerks who got to tour valve studios for free for no reason!! Ugh!

URM0MLIK3SME @ Oct 14th 2009 2:24PM
I think the boycott worked!!!! The 41,000 people in the boycott are now gonna buy the game!!! I love the way boycotts work!
Oh wait.....
Angusailde @ Oct 14th 2009 2:24PM
Way to go, you managed to force their hand on something they were already planning.
Viney @ Oct 14th 2009 2:57PM
Exactly. Hopefully Valve implements one handed controls in L4D2 to make these whiners happy now too. How else are they going to enjoy their successful campaigning while playing L4D2 with all the 'patting themselves on the back' going on.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Oct 14th 2009 2:25PM
Man, I can't wait for the shenanigans these fucks pull when L4D3 comes out...next year.
URM0MLIK3SME @ Oct 14th 2009 2:27PM
And L4D 3 next year is a bad thing??
DangerMouse @ Oct 14th 2009 2:34PM
If it delays Episode 3 any longer, then yes.
simblor @ Oct 14th 2009 5:41PM
I'll be stoked if they announce L4D3 for November next year.
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 14th 2009 2:26PM
I agree with inchworm, fuck them.
It's all a bunch of whiners spoiled by the amazing support TF 2 received. I bought L4D, and was VERY excited when L4D2 was announced. Sure...I felt it was a little early, but I didn't really care because it was MORE L4D.
They gave us another mode (with new maps), and another Campaign...FOR FREE. That's damn good support...Sure, it's not TF 2 support, but there's not many games that get even that much support.
Bottom line...Fuck them.
URM0MLIK3SME @ Oct 14th 2009 2:29PM
There's no such thing as L4D 3 coming out too early!!! I love the series and can't find any zombie game that can compare with it's greatness. People need to stop being cheap bastards
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 14th 2009 2:35PM
I completely agree. It's easily one of the best zombie games out there, and it's worth every cent.
I mean, sports games re-release every year, and they have even less improvements to show for it than L4D...This was really nothing to get excited about at all. Valve always does quality work. whether it's on a sequel that comes a year later, or 10 years later. IT WILL BE WORTH THE MONEY YOU SPEND ON IT.
Balloonfighter99 @ Oct 14th 2009 2:27PM
Let them have their victory. At least Valve humored them and created the illusion that something big was accomplished. Which is basically vidya games in a nutshell.
RANDOM G [XBL: NYMZ777, PSN: NYMALICIOUS] @ Oct 14th 2009 2:28PM
This whole thing was just stupid.
sonofman @ Oct 14th 2009 2:30PM
I am starting a group boycotting Joystiq until they make a new thread... Of course, this group will be hosted on the joystiq site and we will have to visit joystiq to post on it. My hopes are they they get the point that we demand MORE THREADS on game news...
JOIN ME!!! PEOPLE OF THE WEB!! JOIN ME!! AND MAKE A STATEMENT!!!

How about a boycott about the censored version being released in Australia? I'm sure a few Austrians would like some gore on their zombie apocalyse.
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 14th 2009 2:43PM
Hey! Let's boycott George Lucas until he apologizes for ruining Star Wars! And he agrees to remake the Prequel Trilogy with 100 percent less Jar Jar!
YEAH!
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) (Steam: neon6669) @ Oct 14th 2009 2:53PM
Or you could just do what most fans do: grab a beer, drown your sorrows, and just pretend it never happened.
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 14th 2009 2:54PM
No. I want vengance! I want Jar Jar Binks to commit seppuku live during the Super Bowl...and I want George Lucas to beg for mercy. Also, I want Hayden Christiansen incarcerated for life.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) (Steam: neon6669) @ Oct 14th 2009 7:46PM
That would be most awesome. Here's my alternate choice: pick up No More Heroes 2. It'll be much better than any of the Star Wars spin offs.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 14th 2009 3:04PM
just play KOTOR and pretend that was the prequel trilogy
CheeziePotato [Has finally become a Super Saiyan] @ Oct 14th 2009 3:04PM
I want the original theatrical version of the Star Wars Trilogy in Blu-Ray. No damn changes.
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 14th 2009 3:06PM
I saw the 'updated' version of the OT...it was terrible. The sabers were clearly computer generated.
Ashkental @ Oct 14th 2009 3:06PM
Shuttup and enjoy the show, or go see Star Trek, is MUCH better.
I was a SW fans all my life, until i met Star Trek and got out of the Matrix
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 14th 2009 3:08PM
Oh, I know Star Trek is better. But I'm still wounded by what Lucas has done...
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 14th 2009 7:51PM
Don't have a Wii to play it on.
CheeziePotato [Has finally become a Super Saiyan] @ Oct 15th 2009 11:53AM
@Dr. Bradworth
KOTOR is on the Xbox and PC, not on the Wii.
Dr. Bradwart [100% Reagan Conservative!] @ Oct 15th 2009 11:54AM
Asmerom recommended No More Heroes.
I knew Kotor is on the Xbox and PC-I own four copies.
nickux @ Oct 14th 2009 2:43PM
If anything I think the boycott has shown what a stand-up company Valve really is. They were willing to listen to them and took the boycott seriously. Flew out the two dudes for tons of publicity but I think they genuinely wanted to prove L4D2 was worth the money and that they listen to the community. I think what might've helped this would be if they could have somehow allowed owners of L4D to import the 4 campaigns into L4D2. Doubt that's possible though.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) (Steam: neon6669) @ Oct 14th 2009 2:54PM
If there's enough demand, Valve will do it.
