- IGN (90/100): "Brütal Legend isn't quite perfect and there is room for improvement (it's a little short, side quests are repetitive...), but when the credits roll you'll find yourself hoping for a sophomore release. Double Fine created a rich heavy metal universe and backstory full of great characters and creatures, with potential for an out-of-this-world sequel. Here's hoping Schafer and company get a chance to take us there."
- Gamespot (85/100): "Brütal Legend is a game that continually surprises, and it does so in a genuinely fun and interesting way. And Double Fine deserves some major respect for keeping so many aspects of the game closely tied to its subject matter. Of course, Brütal Legend also has some shortcomings. The secondary missions are weak and the single-player campaign lasts about seven hours if you're not too keen on unlocking every single last shrine or secret item. In that respect, it's unfortunate that there's just not more of the good stuff, such as the on-foot missions with boss battles or more fleshed-out side quests."
- Game Life (70/100): "Brütal Legend does a lot of things wonderfully: It's a technically adept, graphically beautiful game with a surprisingly good story and a great soundtrack. The hybrid gameplay just doesn't meet these high standards."
- Giant Bomb (60/100): "The gameplay, as singular a combination of gameplay styles as it is, suffers from being a jack of all trades and master of none. Like most teenage metalheads, this game has got issues, but if you're willing to look past some very uneven gameplay, Brütal Legend will rock you. Hard."
Metareview: Brutal Legend

Our take on Tim Schafer's Brütal Legend was less-than-brutal, but what about all those other reviewers out there tapping away at their keyboards -- what did they think? Turns out that Schafer maintains his visionary golden boy status, even if his latest game hits a couple sour chords.

I was hoping that it would get better grades, but then again, I hardly ever look at what other people think.

Also I think a lot of people are gonna get hung up on the no jump aspect.
I know that's the 2nd post I made about it. But seriously, not being able to at least jump up small ledges that are clearly shorter then the character you're controlling... That's some last gen nonsense right there.

The review Joystiq put up highlighted more negatives than positives. This is true. Now check out Eddie Riggs rocking out IRL!

Kotick knew the people couldn't understand it. He was trying to save it for when they were ready.

I would say 7-8 is about accurate. I'm a big fan of Schafer's, but look at Psychonauts. It wasn't really a great platformer, but the environments and characters were interesting and creative. It's the same thing here, really.

Not being able to jump is a bad omen. I should have got out of SWG when I noticed my character couldn't jump.

I doubt working at best buy is that much different than any other retail store. If they pay decently, then who cares? A job is a job.

Working in Blockbuster is actually a pretty decent working experience. You should apply there. It's less about trying to shove deals down people's throats and more about recommending movies and games that you think people might like. Plus to keep you up to date, they give you 5 free rentals, A WEEK. Screw health care, THAT'S what I call a bonus.

Wow do they pay any new people they hire $13 an hour? I'm looking for a job because I started college and I will definitely go to Best Buy if they pay you that much

Funny enough, I've worked at Blockbuster and Best Buy. Oh and EB Games. I ENJOYED EB the most when I had a manager that only made use suggest crap when district was in the store. Blockbuster was not too bad. Fairly easy, just crappy pay.
Best Buy has the best pay from most normal retail stores hands down. The lowest paid dept though is usually the Media Dept (movies, music and games), which of course is the best dept. :)

Brutal Legend is a game I shall play some day. When it goes on ultimate discount at Target, down to 10 dollars (check out their discounts some time). Just not my cup of tea, especially in that it is essentially an RTS later in the game. I hope the humor keeps up throughout though.

The game's ok so far, but really it's nothing special gameplay wise. Great soundtrack though.

If you're just trying to be helpful, that's great and all, but I don't think there's anyone here that doesn't know about metacritic.

Playing the demo, I just couldn't shake the feeling that if you stripped all the Schafer away from it, it would be a mediocre game. Admittedly, I've only played the demo, so I'm not really qualified to judge the majority of the game, but I found it a pretty basic hack/slash/magickz game.

I think the point of the game *is* the Schaffer magic. No one can claim the fundamental gameplay is mediocre at best, but what makes the game succeed is the quirkiness of the whole damn thing.
It's story, characters, music, art direction, and jokes are loveable and that makes people want to play it.

It wouldn't be a Tim Schafer game without a mixed reception. Granted, this is probably the most mixed out of any of Schafer's games, but anyone who enjoys something odd, quirky, offbeat, etc, usually can't go wrong with one of his games.
Overall, though, it seems people are really digging it, but it has its shortcomings.
This game needs our support.

Agreed. Tim Schafer always has mixed reception. I'm on the "I love all of his games" side of it though.
And to be honest (downvote incoming) I like him alot more than Kojima in terms of a writer/director. If only he had better gameplay designers.

Couldn't agree more, Discotheque. I've been a Schafer fan since I first played Day of the Tentacle. He's pure genius and offers gameplay experiences unlike any other.
I'm also not a big fan of Kojima. No offense to those who do like him. He's good at what he does, but what he does just doesn't interest me all that much.

I like GiantBomb and all, but since when were their reviews included in Metareviews? It was only included for its abysmally low score. I like GiantBomb, but they are flat out wrong in their review. Brutal Legend is one of the best game's I've played in a very long time. It has unmatched story-telling, and a very cool mixture of gameplay styles, and contrary to GiantBomb's statement, it does not suck at all of them at all. The RTS gameplay is very different and quite cool, the action gameplay isn't exactly going to win any awards, but surprise! THIS IS NOT AN ACTION GAME.

I also like GiantBomb a lot, but their opinions rarely matter to me. We seem to be VERY different. For example, they gave Blazblue a 3/5, but I find Blazblue to be the best fighter this generation. The combat is spectacular and the netcode is easily the best in any fighter this generation.

1. They gave it a three star review. That's not abysmally low at all, that's pretty average. It's just metacritic makes the review score worse than it actually is by assigning the review a 60/100 rather than a 3/5
2. LOL OPINIONS. Just because one person likes a game doesn't mean that a person can't disagree. That goes with reviewers as well.
